Passive drag is still a good evaluator of swimming aptitude
The passive drag (Dp) of 218 competitive swimmers was studied and related to their performance level. To study this relationship, specific attention was given to anthropometric and joint laxity (JL) variations. The Dp was measured at 1.40 m.s-1, using a mechanical winch and a strain gauge with a load cell connected to a strain bridge. Swimmers were towed in a prone position holding their breath after a maximal inspiration. Buoyancy was evaluated by the hydrostatic lift (HL), i.e., the maximal weight just necessary to maintain the swimmer in a balanced position under the water after a maximal inspiration. The JL was assessed by a standard scoring system. The Dp was related mainly to the surface area (SA) (r = 0.73 and 0.53; P less than 0.01, for males and females, respectively). For a given SA, Dp was inversely related to the performance level. The JL explained 7% of the variability of Dp. On average, Dp measured after a maximal expiration, increases of about 22% SD 3% (P less than 0.01). This increase was related to individual vital capacities (r = 0.86, P less than 0.01). As Dp was mainly related to SA and HL, it is suggested that the body exerts a large pressure effect on the water. The contribution to performance might be related to the gliding phase of swimming.

Synopsis Swimming speed and swimming path of goldfish and tetra larvae were studied in aquaria containing food patches composed of decapsulated cysts and immobilized nauplii of Artemia salina or sparsely distributed prey. The mean swimming speed of starved larvae in the medium without food was about four times higher than the speed of larvae feeding in a patch. Satiated larvae swam about 1.5 times slower than hungry fish. Consumption of single prey items by starved larvae caused the following sequence of swimming responses: handling pause (cessation of swimming), slow swimming in a restricted area, and fast swimming (approximately twice as fast as hungry larvae before encountering food) accompanied by a widening of the area searched (area increased searching). Mean swimming speed was constant over a broad range (101–103 ind·1–1 of food density, although at extreme (high or low) values of food density it depended on swimming responses of the predator. Frequency of visits to the different parts of the aquarium strongly depended on encounters of hungry fish with food particles or patches.

Synopsis We tested the reactions of free embryos of the amphidromous goby, Rhinogobius brunneus, to light under both artificial and ambient conditions along streams in which their downstream migration occurs. The embryos showed a positive phototaxis to 500 1ux light but a negative response to light of more than 5000 lux. They were able to swim at 1.54 cm sec–1 t in still water and showed positive rheotaxis, but their swimming ability was not sufficient to allow active movement in rapids. Ambient natural light conditions varied among locations in relation to local topographical features. The variation in the diel periodicity of their migration could be explained by the interaction between behavioral reactions of embryos and environmental factors along river courses.

Synopsis Laboratory studies were conducted on 15 schools of blackchin shiners, Notropis heterodon, to determine if they altered their structure in response to changing environmental demands. The hypothesis tested was that fish schools should sacrifice a flat, hydrodynamically efficient structure in favour of an unobstructed visual field in the presence of a predator by staggering in the vertical plane. Ten schools were exposed for two weeks to a simple environment with only a current. For the next two-week period a predator was added. Five control schools were exposed to the simple environment for both two-week periods. Six of the ten treated schools increased their staggering in the vertical dimension as predicted while none of the control schools changed. This result was suggestive that hydrodynamic advantages were sacrificed. Respirometer experiments indicated these fish were capable of achieving some hydrodynamic benefits from schooling but these benefits may be a function of fish size.

Synopsis Transmitters were attached to two female sixgill sharks, Hexanchus griseus, which were followed in course and depth for periods of 4 and 2 days. The sharks swam slowly (10 to 20 cm s-1) and continuously, generally moving parallel to the bottom contours within a limited (less than 10 km long) area. The greatest depth was an excursion to 1500 m, but otherwise the sharks remained near the bottom at depths ranging from 600 to 1100 m.

The swimming behavior of Paramecium is regulated by an excitable membrane that covers the body and cilia of the protozoan. In order to obtain information on the topology and function of ciliary membrane proteins, Paramecia were treated with trypsin, chymotrypsin or pronase and the effects of these proteases were analyzed using electron microscopy, gel electrophoresis of ciliary fractions and behavioral tests. At the concentrations used, trypsin and chymotrypsin had little or no effect on the cells while pronase removed the cell surface coat, visible as fuzzy material covering the cell membrane. The same pronase treatment caused the specific removal of a high molecular weight protein (250 000), as judged by sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. This protein, the ‘immobilization antigen’, constitutes the major protein of the ciliary membrane. Although the immobilization antigen was removed (or markedly decreased), no marked and reproducible difference was observed in the swimming behavior of the treated cells. We also determined the effects of proteases on isolated ciliary fractions to explore the sidedness of ciliary membrane proteins. A set of proteins relatively resistant to protease digestion was identified; they may be intrinsic membrane proteins.

Recordings were made from the nerve innervating the stretch receptors of the abdominal muscle receptor organs and slow extensor muscles of tethered crayfish, Cherax destructor, during so-called non-giant swimming. The stretch receptors were active during the flexor phase of swimming but the duration and pattern of activity varied from cycle to cycle. Their pattern of firing was modified by the activity of the large accessory neurons which make direct inhibitory synapses upon them. Neither the stretch receptors nor the accessory neurons were active during the extensor phase of the cycle. The timing and extent of tailfan movements during the period of stretch receptor activity were measured from video records before and after the stretch receptor nerves were cut in the second to fifth segments. The promotion of the tailfan during flexion was significantly delayed and the minimum angle to which the uropods were remoted at the end of flexion significantly larger in denervated animals. We propose that afferent information from the stretch receptors coordinates the timing and extent of tailfan movements according to variations in the positioning and movement of the abdominal segments such that the hydrodynamic efficiency of the tailfan is enhanced on a cycle by cycle basis during non-giant swimming.Abbreviations A# abdominal segment number - Acc accessory neuron - LUU large unidentified unit - MRO muscle receptor organ - NGS non-giant swimming - SEMN slow extensor motor neuron - SR stretch receptor neuron

Haloacetic acids (HAAs) are water disinfection byproducts (DBPs) formed by the reaction of chlorine oxidizing compounds with natural organic matter in water containing bromine. HAAs are second to trihalomethanes as the most commonly detected DBPs in surface drinking water and swimming pools. After oral exposure (drinking, showering, bathing and swimming), HAAs are rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and excreted in urine. Typical methods used to determine these compounds in urine (mainly from rodents) only deal with one or two HAAs and their sensitivity is inadequate to determine HAA levels in human urine, even those manual sample preparation protocols which are complex, costly, and neither handy nor amenable to automation. In the present communication, we report on a sensitive and straightforward method to determine the nine HAAs in human urine using static headspace (HS) coupled with GC–MS. Important parameters controlling derivatisation and HS extraction were optimised to obtain the highest sensitivity: 120 μl of dimethylsulphate and 100 μl of tetrabutylammonium hydrogen sulphate (derivatisation regents) were selected, along with an excess of Na2SO4 (6 g per 12 ml of urine), an oven temperature of 70 °C and an equilibration time of 20 min. The method developed renders an efficient tool for the precise and sensitive determination of the nine HAAs in human urine (RSDs ranging from 6 to 11%, whereas LODs ranged from 0.01 to 0.1 μg/l). The method was applied in the determination of HAAs in urine from swimmers in an indoor swimming pool, as well as in that of non-swimmers. HAAs were not detected in the urine samples from non-swimmers and those of volunteers before their swims; therefore, the concentrations found after exposure were directly related to the swimming activity. The amounts of MCAA, DCAA and TCAA excreted from all swimmers are related to the highest levels in the swimming pool water.
