Petronijevic T., Rogers W. P. and Sommerville R. I. 1985. Carbonic acid as the host signal for the development of parasitic stages of nematodes. International Journal for Parasitology15: 661–667. This paper gives results on which may be based an identification of the component of the system CO2 + H2O ai H2CO3 ai H+ HCO3? which acts as the stimulus from the animal host for some nematodes. Using infective juveniles of Nematospiroides dubius and Haemonchus contortus, the effects on exsheathment of (1) low pCO2 values, (2) the presence of carbonic anhydrase in the stimulating medium, and (3) the inhibition of carbonic anhydrase within the juveniles have been examined. The results lead to the suggestion that it is the “readily available” undissociated H2CO3, or H2CO3 + HCO3? which is the critical factor in the stimulus for development. The wide range of [H+]s over which “readily available” H2CO3 is present in physiological environments suggests that this host signal may be important for infection with many species.  相似文献

In a captive group of long-tailed macaques, tool-using behavior by a single competent individual had a significant effect on the synchronous manipulative behavior of naïve animals. Group members engaged in manipulations on the same object class more frequently during times when the model was working than when it was not. The form of their behavior, however, in no way resembled the technique used by the model. All three animals that later became successful tool users were among the few subjects that exhibited a significant increase in manipulations on the same object class while the model was working. Possible causal relationships between this stimulus enhancement and the transmission of the new behavior to other group members are analyzed and discussed.  相似文献

Two different kinds of mechanoreceptive hairs (smooth and feathered) on the second antennae of the freshwater crayfish, Orconectes virilis, have been investigated for their stimulus coding propertics. These mechanoreceptors show a great deal of non-linear behaviour both in threshold and in directionality. An effective appraoch for the investigation of such systems is noise analysis in the frequency domain. This method has been used here to calculate zero-, first- and second-order kernels. Sensory cells reveal different first- and second-order kernels, depending on which type of hair is being stimulated. The first-order kernel has a pronounced peak in the frequency response at 110 Hz if a feathered hair is stimulated and at 60 Hz if a smooth hair is stimulated. The second-order kernel shows a number of pronounced peaks in the frequency response between 40 and 110 Hz, but only if a feathered hair is stimulated. Smooth hair stimulation results in less sharp peaks but in higher gain for the same range of stimulus frequencies.  相似文献

Abstract: The catecholamine secretory function of a preparation of isolated bovine adrenal chromaffin cells has been further characterized under conditions designed to elucidate the mechanism of calcium channel activation and the possible role of cytoskeletal elements in stimulus-secretion coupling. Three related sets of data were obtained: (1) Differences in kinetics, Ca dependence, strength, and additivity of the secretory response to acetylcholine (ACh) versus excess K; (2) the effects on secretion of the Ca channel-blocking agents, Ni, Mg, and verapamil; and (3) the Ca dependence of vinblastine action on ACh- and K-evoked secretion. The results suggest that a major portion of the Ca influx required for catecholamine release enters the cell via voltage-dependent Ca channels with some additional Ca influx via the ACh receptor channel. Comparison of the present secretion data with corresponding known electrophysiological properties of isolated chromaffin cells provides added evidence for a role of chromaffin cell action potentials in regulation of Ca influx and the secretory response. Elevated Ca concentrations enhanced K-evoked secretion to levels comparable to that of ACh but did not induce a vinblastine block of K-evoked release. This provides further evidence against a role of microtubules in the common exocytosis event per se. However, a role of cytoskeletal elements in directing the movement of secretory granules, or an action of vinblastine at cholinergic receptors, remain distinct possibilities.  相似文献

ORAI1 is established as an essential component of Ca2+ release-activated Ca2+ (CRAC) channel which mediates store-operated Ca2+ entry (SOCE). However, the contributions of ORAI2 and ORAI3 to SOCE are not understood. We highlight a recent study which shows that ORAI proteins form heteromeric channels which tune SOCE over a range of stimulus intensities.  相似文献

Previous research has shown that after training simple discriminations (A1+/A2−, B1+/B2−), bringing these tasks under conditional control (J1–A1, J2–A2) leads to transfer of discriminative control (J1+/J2−) and to generalized matching on the basis of same discriminative functions (e.g. J1–B1, J2–B2). The same occurs when conditional discriminations are trained (D1–E1, D2–E2; F1–G1, F2–G2). When the subjects are then trained to demonstrate correct relations (D1–E1, D2–E2) when given X1 and to demonstrate incorrect relations when given X2 (XD–E), transfer of discriminative control (X1+/X2−) and generalized matching on the basis of same discriminative functions emerges (e.g. X1F1–G1, X2F1–G2). The present study investigated if these performances are dependent on the training and/or testing order. In Experiment 1, the lower-order contingency tasks were trained before the higher-order contingency tasks (A1+/A2−, B1+/B2− before J–A, and D–E, F–G before XD–E). Half the subjects received the J–B test before the more complex XF–G test (Condition A), while for the other subjects, this testing order was reversed (Condition B). Finally, all subjects received additional tests in which they were given the opportunity to demonstrate the discriminative properties of the J and X stimuli (J1+/J2−, X1+/X2−), and to match the A, J, and X stimuli with newly introduced stimuli of same discriminative properties (e.g. J1-POLITE, J2-RUDE). Experiment 2 was the same except that the training order was reversed (J–A before A1+/A2−, B1+/B2−, and XD–E before D–E, F–G). The results were affected by the training order but not by the testing order. Transfer of discriminative functions and generalized matching on the basis of same functions only occurred reliably when the lower-order contingency tasks were trained first. A stimulus-control account of the data is offered.  相似文献

To understand how information is coded in the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) we need to decipher the relationship between neural activity and tactile stimuli. Such a relationship can be formally measured by mutual information. The present study was designed to determine how S1 neuronal populations code for the multidimensional kinetic features (i.e. random, time-varying patterns of force) of complex tactile stimuli, applied at different locations of the rat forepaw. More precisely, the stimulus localization and feature extraction were analyzed as two independent processes, using both rate coding and temporal coding strategies. To model the process of stimulus kinetic feature extraction, multidimensional stimuli were projected onto lower dimensional subspace and then clustered according to their similarity. Different combinations of stimuli clustering were applied to differentiate each stimulus identification process. Information analyses show that both processes are synergistic, this synergy is enhanced within the temporal coding framework. The stimulus localization process is faster than the stimulus feature extraction process. The latter provides more information quantity with rate coding strategy, whereas the localization process maximizes the mutual information within the temporal coding framework. Therefore, combining mutual information analysis with robust clustering of complex stimuli provides a framework to study neural coding mechanisms related to complex stimuli discrimination.  相似文献

Two experiments tested the assumption of Urcuioli's (2008) theory of pigeons’ equivalence-class formation that consistent non-reinforcement of certain stimulus combinations in successive matching juxtaposed with consistent reinforcement of other combinations generates stimulus classes containing the elements of the reinforced combinations. In Experiment 1, pigeons were concurrently trained on symbolic (AB) and two identity (AA and BB) successive tasks in which half of all identity trials ended in non-reinforcement but all AB trials were reinforced, contingent upon either responding or not responding to the comparisons. Subsequent symmetry (BA) probe trials showed evidence of symmetry in one of four pigeons. In Experiment 2, pigeons learned three pair-comparison tasks in which left versus right spatial choices were reinforced after the various sample-comparison combinations comprising AB, AA, and BB conditional discriminations. Non-differentially reinforced BA probe trials following acquisition showed some indication of symmetrical choice responding. The overall results contradict the theoretical predictions derived from Urcuioli (2008) and those from Experiment 2 challenge other stimulus-class analyses as well.  相似文献

Individuals must often decide among a range of behavioral responses in a given situation and individuals will likely vary from one another in the choices they make. A rarely explored example of this is when both a male and a female are present simultaneously and a male must decide to fight or court. Consistent individual differences have been found in decision-making in Siamese fighting fish; however, dummies were used to explore this question and it is possible that individuals respond differently in this situation when faced with live stimuli as a result of feedback. Therefore, this study investigated whether males behave similarly to dummy and live stimuli by exposing them to male and female conspecifics both simultaneously and separately. Subjects were tested first with dummies and then in the same situations using live conspecifics. It was hypothesized that males would respond in the same manner to both the dummy and live fish. The results indicated that individuals behaved similarly to the dummy fish and the live fish in corresponding conditions. In addition, repeatability levels suggest that individuals behaved similarly across trials of a given treatment type while differing from one another in their responses. This study demonstrates that males are consistent in their responses even when receiving feedback from conspecifics and supports the continued use of dummy stimuli as an effective tool.  相似文献

Stimulus selectivity of sensory systems is often characterized by analyzing response-conditioned stimulus ensembles. However, in many cases these response-triggered stimulus sets have structure that is more complex than assumed. If not taken into account, when present it will bias the estimates of many simple statistics, and distort the estimated stimulus selectivity of a neural sensory system. We present an approach that mitigates these problems by modeling some of the response-conditioned stimulus structure as being generated by a set of transformations acting on a simple stimulus distribution. This approach corrects the estimates of key statistics and counters biases introduced by the transformations. In cases involving temporal spike jitter or spatial jitter of images, the main observed effects of transformations are blurring of the conditional mean and introduction of artefacts in the spectral decomposition of the conditional covariance matrix. We illustrate this approach by analyzing and correcting a set of model stimuli perturbed by temporal and spatial jitter. We apply the approach to neurophysiological data from the cricket cercal sensory system to correct the effects of temporal jitter. Action Editor: Matthew Wiener  相似文献
