To establish baseline hematologic and plasma biochemistry values in free-ranging Humboldt penguins (Spheniscus humboldti), heparinized blood samples were collected from 51 apparently healthy, adult Humboldt penguins residing at two colonies off the Chilean coast. Thirty samples were collected in April, 1992, from penguins inhabiting the Ex-islote de los Pájaros Niños in Algarrobo, Chile. In September, 1992, 21 samples were collected from birds inhabiting Isla de Cachagua, Chile. Hematologic values measured include packed cell volume, leucocyte count, leucocyte differential, and the presence of blood parasites. Plasma biochemistry values measured include glucose, blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, uric acid, calcium, inorganic phosphorous, sodium, potassium, chloride, total protein, albumin, globulin, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, total bilirubin, and creatine kinase. Only the mean values for chloride and for the number of eosinophils differed significantly between the two sample groups. No blood parasites were seen. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Seabirds in expanding colonies select the highest-quality nesting habitat, but habitat selection has seldom been studied in declining colonies. We studied a colony of Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) that declined from 314,000 active nests in 1987 to 201,000 in 2014. As expected, nest quality and reproductive success were higher in burrow habitats than in other habitats, and nest density decreased with distance from shore. Contrary to predictions, the steepest declines did not occur in the poorest-quality habitat (scrub) or near the inland colony edge and the colony area did not shrink. In agreement with predictions, penguins shifted from nests with less cover to nests with more cover. The highest nest densities and the steepest declines were in habitats of large bushes and bush clusters. As the population declined penguins abandoned nests on the edges of large bushes. Constraints on penguin habitat-use changes include strong area and nest-site fidelity, increased avian predation in high-density areas, soil characteristics, and the costs of making and maintaining nests. Contrary to conventional wisdom we found low-density, poor-quality scrub habitat (which covers >70 % of the colony area) contained 45 % of active nests, produced 44 % of fledglings, and was as important as high-quality habitat for reproductive output. Our research shows that all habitats in a declining colony of seabirds have value for conservation.  相似文献

The Magellanic Penguin (Spheniscus magellanicus) is the most abundant and widely distributed seabird breeding on the Patagonian Coast of Argentina. We combined conventional stomach content and stable isotope analysis to assess Magellanic Penguin diet during the chick rearing stage at the two northernmost colonies in an area subject to fisheries. In 2011 and 2013, Thornfish (Bovichtus argentinus) was the main prey by mass at Complejo Islote Lobos (63.0% and 32.3%, respectively) and Argentine Anchovy (Engraulis anchoita) at Estancia San Lorenzo (85.2 and 63.3%, respectively). Magellanic Penguins from both colonies showed low isotopic niche overlap in 2011 (36%) and no overlap in 2013, suggesting a different use of prey species and/or foraging areas. Stable isotope mixing models showed that Argentine Anchovy (52.8%) and Thornfish (65.9%) were the main prey at Complejo Islote Lobos in 2011 and 2013, respectively, while Patagonian Redfish (Sebastes oculatus) (46.4%) and Squat Lobster (Munida gregaria) (50%) were the main prey at Estancia San Lorenzo in 2011 and 2013, respectively. Results show that in addition to Argentine Anchovy, previously recognized as main prey for breeding Magellanic Penguins in northern Patagonia, other juvenile or small sized fish are important diet items. Diet results suggest different scenarios of food conditions for each colony, despite the relative short distance between breeding locations. The low contribution of Argentine Hake (Merluccius hubbsi) and Argentine Shortfin Squid (Illex argentinus) suggests a low trophic overlap with commercial fisheries. The information provided is key to understand changes in the marine ecosystem and potential penguin-fishery interactions.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Banding penguins is controversial because bands can alter the survival, reproduction, and behavior of marked individuals. The effects of bands are not consistent among band types and, although stainless steel is thought to be better than other materials, tests of the long‐term impact of bands on tag‐loss rates and the reproduction and survival of individuals are needed. We tested three types of external tags on Magellanic Penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) to measure band effects and tag‐loss rates. In 1993, we double‐tagged 300 penguins with aluminum flipper bands, stainless‐steel flipper bands, or small (2 mm × 10 mm) metal tags attached to foot webbing. We searched for double‐tagged birds for 13 of 15 yrs (1994–2008). Aluminum bands deformed, caused feather wear, injured and killed some penguins, and were lost more often than stainless‐steel bands or web tags. During the first 2 yrs of our study, at least nine penguins lost one aluminum band (N= 71 penguins resighted), but no penguins lost a stainless‐steel band (N= 84) or a web tag (N= 88). During the next 13 yrs, five penguins lost one of their two web tags (N= 89), but none lost a stainless‐steel band (N= 84). Females laid eggs of similar size before they carried a band and in the year following tagging (P= 0.09). The type of tags a female carried did not significantly change egg size (P > 0.22). During the first breeding season after tagging, penguins with aluminum bands had lower reproductive success than penguins with stainless‐steel bands or web‐tags (P= 0.04). The annual survival of females with two stainless‐steel bands was lower (0.79) than that of males with two stainless‐steel bands or males and females with two web‐tags (0.87). Aluminum bands injured Magellanic Penguins, were lost at high rates, and should not be used. Double stainless‐steel bands had no apparent effects on adult male Magellanic Penguins, but reduced survival rates of adult females. A single stainless‐steel band would likely have less impact than two bands, and our results suggest that the impact of a single band would be difficult to measure.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Egg volume is often calculated from length and breadth, assuming little variation in egg shape within species. However, egg shape may vary among females, over time, or within clutches. If this variation is not predictable, volume should be estimated using another method. For example, in some species, egg shape changes consistently with laying order and volume can be estimated using laying‐order specific equations. We measured the length, breadth, volume, and mass of 249 Magellanic Penguin (Spheniscus magellanicus) eggs and regressed volume on length and breadth for first and second eggs separately. Differences between measured and calculated volume averaged <1% for both eggs. Using linear measurements, we calculated egg volume for 7085 clutches from 1983 to 2006. First and second eggs had similar calculated volumes (P > 0.05) in 19 of 24 yr; when they differed, the second egg was larger. In contrast, using single equations typically employed to compute egg volume, we erroneously concluded that first eggs were usually (20 of 24 yr) significantly larger than second eggs. Our regression equations should be applicable to other Spheniscus penguins because ratios of elongation coefficients (length divided by breadth) of first and second eggs are similar among these species. In other species of birds where egg shape changes with laying order, the volume of a sample of eggs should be measured to develop regression equations specific to the species and laying order. Slight variation in egg volume can have important evolutionary and ecological implications that would be erroneously interpreted without field tests to measure volume.  相似文献

The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) is one of the most polymorphic regions of the genome, likely due to balancing selection acting to maintain alleles over time. Lack of MHC variability has been attributed to factors such as genetic drift in small populations and relaxed selection pressure. The Galápagos penguin (Spheniscus mendiculus), endemic to the Galápagos Islands, is the only penguin that occurs on the equator. It relies upon cold, nutrient-rich upwellings and experiences severe population declines when ocean temperatures rise during El Niño events. These bottlenecks, occurring in an already small population, have likely resulted in reduced genetic diversity in this species. In this study, we used MHC class II exon 2 sequence data from a DRB1-like gene to characterize the amount of genetic variation at the MHC in 30 Galápagos penguins, as well as one Magellanic penguin (S. magellanicus) and two king penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus), and compared it to that in five other penguin species for which published data exist. We found that the Galápagos penguin had the lowest MHC diversity (as measured by number of polymorphic sites and average divergence among alleles) of the eight penguin species studied. A phylogenetic analysis showed that Galápagos penguin MHC sequences are most closely related to Humboldt penguin (Spheniscus humboldti) sequences, its putative sister species based on other loci. An excess of non-synonymous mutations and a pattern of trans-specific evolution in the neighbor-joining tree suggest that selection is acting on the penguin MHC.  相似文献

Game theory models predict that fighting ability should be moreimportant in contest outcome when the payoffs of winning arehigh for both contestants, and ownership should be more importantwhen payoffs are low. Male Magellanic penguins (Spheniscusmagellanicus) provide an opportunity to test these predictionsin a natural setting because payoffs of winning are higher for penguins fighting before egg laying and lower for penguinsfighting after egg laying, allowing the prediction of differencesin who should win and lose. We watched an area of approximately2000 Magellanic penguin nests from 1992 to 1996 at Punta Tombobreeding colony, Argentina; we quantified fighting behavior, banded contestants, measured their body size (here used as anindex of fighting ability), determined ownership status whenpossible, and monitored their reproductive success. We determinedthat male Magellanic penguins fought for nests and mates. Astheory predicts, before egg laying, body size difference wasmore important than ownership as a predictor of contest outcome and fight duration. After egg laying, owners won fights, andsize did not predict who won or how long they fought. Our comparisonsof nest ownership, nest quality, and chicks fledged by winnersand losers suggested that our predictions on the change inbenefits of winning before and after egg laying were correct. We conclude that game theory models are useful in predictingwho won or lost fights in male Magellanic penguins and thatultimate benefits of winning fights are related to fitness.  相似文献

Summary

The distribution of serotonin-like immunoreactivity was studied in the central nervous system and the gonad of Pecten maximus. Cerebral and pedal ganglia contain a well developed serotonin-immunoreactive neuronal subpopulation, whereas positive neurons are scarce in the visceral ganglion. The distribution pattern of immunoreactive elements in the gonad indicate that serotonin is involved in peripheral neurotransmission of this organ. Seasonal variations of monoamines (serotonin, dopamine and noradrenaline) have been investigated in the nervous system using HPLC. Lower concentrations of serotonin are observed during winter in the central nervous system; dopamine levels of the visceral ganglion are correlated to gonadal growth.  相似文献

Biased offspring sex ratio is relatively rare in birds and sex allocation can vary with environmental conditions, with the larger and more costly sex, which can be either the male or female depending on species, favoured during high food availability. Sex‐specific parental investment may lead to biased mortality and, coupled with unequal production of one sex, may result in biased adult sex ratio, with potential grave consequences on population stability. The African Penguin Spheniscus demersus, endemic to southern Africa, is an endangered monogamous seabird with bi‐parental care. Female adult African Penguins are smaller, have a higher foraging effort when breeding and higher mortality compared with adult males. In 2015, a year in which environmental conditions were favourable for breeding, African Penguin chick production on Bird Island, Algoa Bay, South Africa, was skewed towards males (1.5 males to 1 female). Males also had higher growth rates and fledging mass than females, with potentially higher post‐fledging survival. Female, but not male, parents had higher foraging effort and lower body condition with increasing number of male chicks in their brood, thereby revealing flexibility in their parental strategy, but also the costs of their investment in their current brood. The combination of male‐biased chick production and higher female mortality, possibly at the juvenile stage as a result of lower parental investment in female chicks, and/or at the adult stage as a result of higher parental investment, may contribute to a biased adult sex ratio (ASR) in this species. While further research during years of contrasting food availability is needed to confirm this trend, populations with male‐skewed ASRs have higher extinction risks and conservation strategies aiming to benefit female African Penguin might need to be developed.  相似文献
