Acoustic monitoring can provide essential information on marine environments, including insights into ecosystem functioning and marine biodiversity monitoring. However, data on species acoustic behavior and ecoacoustics studies in the Mediterranean Sea are still extremely scarce and this limits our ability to use soundscape features in monitoring studies. Here we present the results of a soundscape investigation conducted on shallow hard bottoms of the Adriatic Sea (Central Mediterranean basin). We report the presence of diverse circadian rhythms recorded in two different months, July and September. A power spectral density (PSD) was used to assess the overall spectral composition over time, and the Acoustic Complexity Index (ACI), was identified as a proxy for marine sounds of biological origin. The dominant component of the biological soundscape was composed of snapping shrimps and fishes. Spectral characteristics varied significantly both daily and between the two months. For frequencies >620 Hz (i.e., associated to snapping shrimp activity), both PSD and ACI were higher in July than in September. The same circadian rhythm was reported in both sampling periods, with the presence of snaps for 24 h a day, but with significantly lower intensity during daylight hours and pitches at the beginning and ending of the night. At lower frequencies (i.e., <620 Hz), fish vocalizations mostly occurred during the night. Higher values of ACI were recorded during the night in both months, whereas the presence of anthropogenic noise caused opposite results in PSD levels. Noise was associated with higher PSD and ACI at the peak frequency of the snaps, suggesting a stimulation in snapping activity. Our findings provide new insights on the marine biological soundscape and on the potential use of ecoacoustics in future monitoring programs.  相似文献

The rainfall regime is one of the main abiotic components that can cause modifications in the breeding activity of animal species. It has a direct effect on the environmental conditions, and acts as a modifier of the landscape and soundscape. Variations in water quality and acidity, flooding, erosion, and sound distortion are usually related with the presence of rain. Thereby, ecological studies in populations and communities would benefit from improvements in the estimation of rainfall patterns throughout space and time.In this paper, a method for automatic detection of rainfall in forests by using acoustic recordings is proposed. This approach is based on the estimation of the mean value and signal to noise ratio of the power spectral density in the frequency band in which the sound of the raindrops falling over the vegetation layers of the forest is more prominent (i.e. 600–1200 Hz). The results of this method were compared with human auditory identification and data provided by a pluviometer. We achieved a correlation of 95.23% between the data provided by the pluviometer and the predictions of a regression model. Furthermore, we attained a general accuracy between 92.90% and 99.98% when identifying different intensity levels of rainfall on recordings.Nowadays, passive monitoring recorders have been extensively used to study of acoustic-based breeding processes of several animal species. Our method uses the signals acquired by these recorders in order to identify and quantify rainfall events in short and long time spans. The proposed approach will automatically provide information about the rainfall patterns experienced by target species based on audio recordings.  相似文献

Soundscape as an inherent part of landscape provides ecosystem services, first of all spiritual and symbolic services as well as educational and esthetic ones. The value of these services depends on the ability to hear sounds of nature. However, more often people can hear only sounds generated by humans and those generated by organisms and the physical environment become very desirable. Reports of the European Commission confirm that the noise in the environment is a very serious threat to public health and that the noise exposure in Europe is increasing. It is estimated that the main threat to the acoustic climate is road noise, both in the cities and outside them. Although the soundscape is a non-market good, the attempts of its evaluation have been increasing, usually by estimating the economic costs arising from exposure to noise: lost productivity, medical expenses, decreases in revenues from tourism. The authors used the hedonic pricing method to estimate the decline in undeveloped property prices associated with road noise around the city of Poznan. To extract the effects of noise also other factors that contribute to the land price were considered. The model chosen by using multiple regression showed, that plots located in the zone with noise exceedance at night were about 57% cheaper than those located outside this zone. The results can be helpful in spatial planning, especially for estimating costs of road investments in environmental and economic impact assessments.  相似文献

Soundscape assessment has been proposed as a remote ecological monitoring tool for measuring biodiversity, but few studies have examined how soundscape patterns vary with landscape configuration and condition. The goal of our study was to examine a suite of published acoustic indices to determine whether they provide comparable results relative to varying levels of landscape fragmentation and ecological condition in nineteen forest sites in eastern Australia. Our comparison of six acoustic indices according to time of day revealed that two indices, the acoustic complexity and the bioacoustic index, presented a similar pattern that was linked to avian song intensity, but was not related to landscape and biodiversity attributes. The diversity indices, acoustic entropy and acoustic diversity, and the normalized difference soundscape index revealed high nighttime sound, as well as a dawn and dusk chorus. These indices appear to be sensitive to nocturnal biodiversity which is abundant at night in warm, subtropical environments. We argue that there is need to better understand temporal partitioning of the soundscape by specific taxonomic groups, and this should involve integrated research on amphibians, insects and birds during a 24 h cycle. The three indices that best connected the soundscape with landscape characteristics, ecological condition and bird species richness were acoustic entropy, acoustic evenness and the normalized difference soundscape index. This study has demonstrated that remote soundscape assessment can be implemented as an ecological monitoring tool in fragmented Australian forest landscapes. However, further investigation should be dedicated to refining and/or combining existing acoustic indices and also to determine if these indices are appropriate in other landscapes and for other survey purposes.  相似文献

Human disconnection from nature is thought to have contributed to the environmental crises we currently face, and increasing connection with nature has been proposed as one way of promoting pro-environmental behavior, nature conservation, and social-ecological sustainability. Some efforts to increase connection with nature (“nature relatedness”) have centered on exploring the social-ecological importance of soundscapes, but there is a paucity of empirical evidence supporting the theoretical linkage between soundscape perception and nature relatedness. Using prerecorded and in situ soundscape prompts, we conducted a street intercept survey in Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina to assess: 1) the relative importance of senses in experiences of nature, 2) the relationship between nature relatedness and soundscape perception, 3) differences in soundscape perception between various soundscapes, and 4) possible sociodemographic influences on sense importance, nature relatedness, and soundscape perception. Participants reported that hearing was of secondary importance to vision in experiences of nature. We also found that nature relatedness was positively correlated with the valuation of soundscapes—particularly more natural ones—but not with the discernment of soundscapes or identification of where soundscapes were recorded. Valuation of more natural soundscapes was higher than valuation of more technophonically dominated soundscapes, while soundscape discernment and location identification were higher for soundscapes that were likely more familiar to listeners. Sociodemographic influences on these variables were minor, but women reported higher sense importance, and having a nature-based occupation was associated with higher nature relatedness and valuation of a soundscape from a penguin colony. Our study highlighted a number of potential research areas concerning soundscape perception, including differences between prerecorded and in situ soundscape prompts, defining various aspects of soundscape perception, and the relative influences of sound sources and quantitative acoustic parameters on soundscape perception. Further research is certainly needed to account for global diversity in cultures and soundscapes, but we found some promising empirical support for the use of natural-soundscape-focused educational programs in efforts to promote nature relatedness.  相似文献
