The problematic cemented Devonian brachiopod Schuchertellopsis durbutensis Maillieux, 1939

The Devonian cemented brachiopod Schuchertellopsis durbutensis has proved difficult to classify and its possible taxonomic relationships are unknown. Morphologically Schuchertellopsis resembles more closely members of the Orthotetidina than the Davidsoniidina. Examination of the shell structure, a key diagnostic feature of the Orthotetidina, shows that Schuchertellopsis has the cross laminar secondary shell typical of all orthotetidines. However, the presence of both pseudopunctate and incipient an extropunctate fabric within the ventral valve is unique amongst orthotetidine brachiopods and is thought to represent a phase of shell fabric experimentation. Schuchertellopsis probably fits most comfortably within the Schuchertellidae, and is the earliest representative of that family.     

Distribution of N,P, K,Ca, Mg,S, Zn,Fe, Mn and Cu in groundnut

Summary Concentration of N, P, K, Ca, Mg and S in summer groundnut crop was higher than in kharif while Zn, Fe, Mn and Cu contents were higher in summer crop. Kernel's N, P and Zn; Leaflet's Ca and Mn; Stem's K and Fe; Root's S and Cu and Petiole's Mg contents were highest. Shell's N, P, K, Mg, S, Zn and Cu; Kernel's Ca, Fe and Mn contents were the least. N, P, K, S, Zn and Cu concentrations decreased linearly as the crop grew. Ca, Mg, Fe and Mn concentrations did not display any distinct pattern. Ca concentration was positively correlated with pod yield in both the seasons.     

Protein composition of the carboxysomes of Thiobacillus neapolitanus

For purifying carboxysomes of Thiobacillus neapolitanus an isolation procedure was developed which resulted in carboxysomes free from whole cells, protoplasts and cell fragments. These purified carboxysomes are composed of 8 proteins and at the most of 13 polypeptides. The two most abundant proteins which make up more than 60% of the carboxysomes, are ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase and a glycoprotein with a molecular weight of 54,000. The shell of the carboxysomes consists of four glycoproteins, one also with a molecular weight of 54,000. The other proteins are present in minor quantities. Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase is the only enzyme which could be detected in the carboxysomes and 3-phosphoglycerate was the only product formed during incubation with ribulose-1,5-diphosphate and bicarbonate. The supernatant of a broken and centrifuged carboxysome suspension contained the large subunit of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase. The small subunit of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase was found in the pellet together with the shell proteins which indicates that the small subunit of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase is connected to the shell.Abbreviations RuBisCO ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase - PMSF phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride - PAA gelectrophoresis, polyacrylamide gelelectrophoresis - SDS sodium dodecyl sulphate - CIE crossed immunoelectrophoresis - IEF isoelectric focusing

Summary The mytilid genusLithophaga is confirmed for the Upper Triassic. The Rhaetian specimen, boring the dead part of coral, is compared with the SenonianL. alpina, which is associated with live coral.

Reproductive strategies of coastal marine fishes in the tropics

Synopsis A synthesis of ethnobiological, behavioral and physical oceanographic information leads to the conclusion that temperate zone models of reproductive strategy are inapplicable to many fishes of the coastal tropics. Intense predation appears to exert heavy selection pressure on fishes that spend their adult lives in coral, mangrove or tropical seagrass communities. Many exhibit spawning behaviors and spawn at times and locations that favor the transport of their pelagic eggs and pelagic larvae offshore where predation is reduced. This creates a countervailing selection pressure — the need to return the larvae to shallow water once they are ready to colonize their post-larval habitats. Accordingly, spawning is often concentrated at times of the year when prevailing winds or currents are at their weakest, thereby reducing the transport of larvae long distances from where they originated. Spawning is also concentrated in the vicinity of nearshore gyres which similarly favor the ultimate return of the larvae to their natal area. Among these species, therefore, offshore larval dispersal does not seem to be an adaptation for dispersal of the species, but rather an evolutionary response to intense predation pressure in the adult habitats. Lunar reproductive periodicity is more common among these species than has previously been recognized, and is one of the strategies employed to enhance the offshore flushing of eggs and larvae.This paper forms part of the proceedings of a mini-symposium convened at Cornell University, Ithaca, N. 在15只麻醉开胸犬中,用在体器官恒流灌注法研究了骨胳肌、皮肤、肾和心脏的血管在5-HT 诱发的主动脉区化学感受性升血压反射中的反应,同时还观察了5-HT 对这些器官血管的直接效应。左心房注入5-HT(200μg)后,在动脉血压急剧上升的同时,股薄肌、皮肤(后爪)和肾脏的灌流压明显增加,其增值分别为43±8.47±5和56±27mmHg(P<0.01),而冠脉灌流压无明显改变。用阿托品和/或心得安阻断骨胳肌、皮肤和心脏灌流区域的 m 和同β-受体后,上述效应无进一步变动。向灌流环路直接注入5-HT(10—50μg),可引起皮肤和肾脏的血管收缩,而股薄肌和心肌的血管则扩张;后一效应不被心得安阻断。以上结果提示:1.在5-HT 诱发的主动脉区化学感受性升血压反射中,骨胳肌、皮肤和肾脏呈现明显的交感性缩血管反应,而并不伴有交感性扩血管活动;2.在外周血管可能存在两种不同的5-HT 受体,一种主要分布在皮肤和肾脏,引起缩血管效应;另一种主要分布于骨胳肌和冠状血管,引起扩血管效应。     

Eine einfache methode zur erfassung der parameter von spitzwinkeligen gastropodengehäusen

The D.M. Raup & A. Michelson model of assessing shell-coiling constitutes a method which simplifies the measuring of spiral-coiling gastropod shells. With, this method the information is obtained by measuring the photograph of the object.The newly developed method has the advantage of dispensing with an exact shell orientation (horizontally located axis) and magnification.Instead of photographing the object with a camera the shell is placed upon photographic paper and in this manner a contact showing the shell outlines can be achieved by exposing and developing the print. Correct information is then obtained by means of the conversion factors (1–3) as outlined in this paper.
