Guaianolides and lignans from Centaurea solstitialis subs Schouwii

Aerial parts of Centaurea solstitialis subs schouwii afforded the guaianolides cynaropicrin and aguerin B and the lignans arctigenin and matairesinol. The structure of a third guaianolide previously found also in Centaurea behen was revised.     

Hirsutinolides,glaucolides and sesquiterpene lactone from Vernonia species

The investigation of nine Vernonia species afforded in addition to known sesquiterpenes 28 new ones. The structures were elucidated by high field ¹H NMR spectroscopy and the configurations were determined by NOE difference spectroscopy and, in one case, by X-ray analysis. The results indicated that configurations of several previously reported sesquiterpene lactones have had to be revised. In addition to known types two new ones, the jalcaguaianolides and the vernojalcanolides, are described. Furthermore some unusual reaction products are presented which, in part, led to some natural occurring lactones.     

Further glaucolides from south african Vernonia species

The investigation of three South African Vernonia species afforded minute amounts of five new glaucolides, two monoepoxides and three diepoxides. The structures were elucidated by ¹H NMR spectroscopy. The roots of Vernonia sutherlandii contain, in addition to vernonataloide, bergamotene and santalene, minute amounts of the corresponding acetoxy derivatives.     

Guaianolides from Saussurea affinis

Cynaropicrin, 11βH-11,13-dihydrodesacylcynaropicrin, aguerins A and B, isoamberboin and the new guaianolides saussureolide and 11βH-11,13-dihydrodesacylcynaropicrin 8-β-d-glucoside were isolated from Saussurea affinis.     

Studies on the biosynthesis and metabolism of the phytoalexin lubimin and related compounds in Datura stramonium L.

Arachidonic acid, cellulase, CuSO₄, a sonicate of Phytophthora infestans mycelium and a spore suspension of Penicillium chrysogenum all elicited the formation of the sesquiterpenoid phytoalexins lubimin, 3-hydroxylubimin and rishitin in fruit cavities of Datura stramonium. 3-Hydroxylubimin was the predominant phytoalexin formed after treatment of the fruits with arachidonic acid, cellulase and the P. infestans preparation. Copper sulphate was a potent elicitor of lubimin but not 3-hydroxylubimin. The fungus P. chrysogenum metabolized lubimin and 3-hydroxylubimin to 15-dihydrolubimin and 3-hydroxy-15-dihydrolubimin respectively, both in fruit cavities inoculated with spores of this fungus and in pure culture. The 15-dihydrolubimin formed in the fruits by the fungus was further metabolized (by the fruits) to both isolubimin and 3-hydroxy-15-dihydrolubimin. The precursor-product relationships between all of the subject compounds was investigated by feeding experiments with ³H-labelled compounds. 2-Dehydro-[15-³H₁]lubimin was rapidly and efficiently incorporated into lubimin and may be the direct precursor of lubimin in planta. 3-Hydroxy[2-³H₁]lubimin was incorporated into the nor-eudesmane rishitin but 10-epi-3-hydroxy[2-³H₁]lubimin was not. Melampolides from Enhydra fluctuans var. Fluctuans

The investigation of the aerial parts of a variety of Enhydra fluctuans afforded in addition to 4-hydroxyfarnesyl acetate and fluctuadin five new melampolides elucidated by high field ¹H NMR spectroscopy. The chemotaxonomic situation is discussed briefly.     

The stereochemistry of matricin and 4-epimatricin,proazulene sesquiterpene lactones from Artemisia arborescens

An investigation of Artemisia arborescens afforded, in addition to the known compounds matricin, artabsin and artemetin, the new guaianolide 4-epimatricin. The stereostructures of 4-epimatricin and matricin were assigned on the basis of spectroscopic evidence.     

Three furanoheliangolides from Calea villosa

Calea villosa afforded three new sesquiterpene lactones, two furanoheliangolides and an epoxy- germacranolide, as well as several known compounds. The structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods.     

Sesquiterpene lactones from Viguiera species

Viguiera eriophora yielded the sesquiterpene lactones erioflorin, acetylerioflorin and 17,18-dehydroviguiepinin, which was correlated with tetrahyd
