Among several specimens of Grosphus hirtus Kraepelin (Scorpiones, Buthidae), obtained in Madagascar, Mahajanga Province, Parc National d’Ankarafantsika, Station Forestière d’Ampijoroa, and then held in captivity, the courtship and mating behaviour of two females was observed. These two animals gave birth in captivity to 26 and 37 offspring of which two and three reached maturity, respectively. The duration of the five instars needed to reach the adult stage in both males and females averaged 14, 112, 117, 274, and 334 days. These developmental periods are much longer than those of Grosphus flavopiceus Kraepelin, the only other species in this genus studied, and longer than those of most examined species of Buthidae. Morphometric values for the different instars are presented from the individual offspring and from specimens collected in the wild. On the basis of these values, the average growth factor (Dyar's constant) per moult for three different measured structures was calculated from the pooled data. Dyar's constant is expressed for the first time in scorpions of the genus Grosphus. Instars growth factors are also comparable to other species of Buthidae.  相似文献

Scorpion venoms are among the most widely known source of peptidyl neurotoxins used for callipering different ion channels, e.g., for Na(+), K(+), Ca(+) or Cl(-). An alpha-toxin (Bs-Tx28) has been purified from the venom of scorpion Buthus sindicus, a common yellow scorpion of Sindh, Pakistan. The primary structure of Bs-Tx28 was established using a combination of MALDI-TOF-MS, LC-ESI-MS, and automated Edman degradation analysis. Bs-Tx28 consists of 65 amino acid residues (7274.3+/-2Da), including eight cysteine residues, and shows very high sequence identity (82-94%) with other long-chain alpha-neurotoxins, active against receptor site-3 of mammalian (e.g., Lqq-IV and Lqh-IV from scorpions Leiurus sp.) and insect (e.g., BJalpha-IT and Od-1 from Buthotus judaicus and Odonthobuthus doriae, respectively) voltage-gated Na(+) channels. Multiple sequence alignment and phylogenetic analysis of Bs-Tx28 with other known alpha- and alpha-like toxins suggests the presence of a new and separate subfamily of scorpion alpha-toxins. Bs-Tx28 which is weakly active in both, mammals and insects (LD(50) 0.088 and 14.3microg/g, respectively), shows strong induction of the rat afferent nerve discharge in a dose-dependent fashion (EC(50)=0.01microg/mL) which was completely abolished in the presence of tetrodotoxin suggesting the binding of Bs-Tx28 to the TTX-sensitive Na(+)-channel. Three-dimensional structural features of Bs-Tx28, established by homology modeling, were compared with other known classical alpha-mammal (AaH-II), alpha-insect (Lqh-alphaIT), and alpha-like (BmK-M4) toxins and revealed subtle variations in the Nt-, Core-, and RT-CT-domains (functional domains) which constitute a "necklace-like" structure differing significantly in all alpha-toxin subfamilies. On the other hand, a high level of conservation has been observed in the conserved hydrophobic surface with the only substitution of W43 (Y43/42) and an additional hydrophobic character at position F40 (L40/A/V/G39), as compared to the other mentioned alpha-toxins. Despite major differences within the primary structure and activities of Bs-Tx28, it shares a common structural and functional motif (e.g., transRT-farCT) within the RT-CT domain which is characteristic of scorpion alpha-mammal toxins.  相似文献

Summary

The scanning electron microscope was used to study changes in the ventral mesosoma of the vaejovid scorpion, Paruroctonus mesaensis. Observations are compared with those from scorpion fossils. The oldest fossils are from the Silurian period; migration from water to land occurred in the Carboniferous and Permian periods. All recent scorpions are terrestrial with four pairs of booklungs and spiracles in mesosomal sternites. Ancient eurypterids and scorpions had flap-like abdominal plates attached to the ventral surface of five mesosomal segments. The abdominal plates were apparently an aquatic adaptation, and authors have described possible gill tissue in the chamber above. In scorpion embryos, rectangular (holostem) plate-like structures precede the formation of sternites in the ventral mesosoma. Transverse folds were seen in the space above the abdominal plates. The lack of elaborate gill-like structures here supports an earlier hypothesis that aquatic scorpions had other mesosomal respiratory sites (e.g., pectines), resulting in less reliance on respiratory tissues above the abdominal plates. Spiracles initially appear as round or ovoid patterns in the epidermis at the latero-posterior margins of the ventral plates. The booklung spiracles are positioned farther anterior in sternites, but the developmental sequence for this transition is still unclear and may occur later than the stages of this study. The abdominal plates lengthen and enlarge laterally and/or epidermis is added at the lateral edges so that broad, overlapping sternites eventually cover the ventral surface of the mesosoma.  相似文献

This work stems from the results of a recent phylogenetic investigation on the Euscorpius carpathicus species complex from the Italian peninsula (Salomone et al. 2004. Phylogenetic relationships between the sibling species Euscorpius tergestinus and E. sicanus (Scorpiones, Euscorpiidae) as inferred from mitochondrial and nuclear sequence data. In: Proceedings of the16th Congress of Arachnology, August 2-7, 2004, Ghent University, Belgium, 268pp.; Salomone et al. in prep.). Molecular investigation produced interesting and unexpected findings on the scorpion Euscorpius tergestinus (C.L. Koch, 1837). Both nuclear and mitochondrial sequence data provided evidence of substantial genetic differentiation in specimens identified as Euscorpius tergestinus according to recent taxonomical changes (Fet and Soleglad 2002. Morphology analysis supports presence of more than one species in the “Euscorpius carpathicus” complex (Scorpiones: Euscorpiidae). Euscorpius 3, 51pp.). These specimens clearly belong to two well-differentiated evolutionary lineages. Molecular results highlighted the need for a new morphological investigation. The present study undertook the morphological analysis of specimens belonging to both genotypes with the aim of identifying morphological characteristics able to discriminate between the two taxa. The analysis of trichobothria patterns, morphometric ratios, granulation patterns and the observation of the pectinal sensilla confirm the difficulty in distinguishing these two genotypes and the high polymorphism of the subgenus Euscorpius Thorell, 1876. The length of pedipalp segments and dorsal patellar spurs (DPS), as well as femur leg granulation, are the main diagnostic characters; other ratios together with body color also help to distinguish the different genotypes. This study confirms the presence in Italy of two different cryptic species belonging to the “Euscorpius tergestinus” complex. Euscorpius tergestinus is a reddish, slender euscorpiid with a large dorsal patellar spine (DPS). A darker and generally squat phenotype with a short DPS, which corresponds to Euscorpius carpathicus concinnus sensu Caporiacco (1950), is elevated to the species level: Euscorpius concinnus (C.L. Koch, 1837). These two species are sympatric in several Italian regions, and their distribution pattern is possibly determined by intraguild predaction interaction.  相似文献

Among invertebrates, scorpions possess a relatively unique set of reproductive traits. The interrelationships of these traits may have important implications for life history theory, yet there have been few studies of these traits in scorpions. Our data indicate that larger female Centruroides vittatus produce more offspring and have a higher total litter mass than smaller females. There was, however, no significant relationship between offspring size and female or litter size. Mean offspring mass increased with increases in total litter mass and within litter variation in offspring size (coefficients of variation) decreased with increasing total litter mass. These results suggest that large female scorpions with a larger investment in reproduction produced more offspring that were more uniform in size, but not significantly larger, than small females with less investment. The fractional clutch principle and physiological and functional constraints on size and number of offspring are suggested as possible explanations for the relationships we found among offspring size, variation in offspring size and total investment in offspring in C. vittatus.  相似文献

Although information concerning variation among and within populations is essential to understanding an organism's life history, little is known of such variation in any species of scorpion. We show that reproductive investment by the scorpion Centruroides vittatus varied among three Texas populations during one reproductive season. Females from the Kickapoo population produced smaller offspring and larger litters than females from the Independence Creek or Decatur populations; this pattern remained when adjusting for among population variation in either female mass or total litter mass. Relative clutch mass (RCM) and within-litter variability in offspring mass (V*) did not differ among populations. Among-population variation may result from genetic differences or from phenotypically plastic responses to differing environments. Within populations, the interrelationships among reproductive variables were similar for Decatur and Independence Creek: females investing more in reproduction (measured by total litter mass, TLM) produced larger litters and larger offspring, and V* decreased with increased mean offspring mass (and with decreased litter size at Decatur). At Kickapoo, larger females produced larger litters and had larger TLM; females investing more in reproduction produced larger litters but not larger offspring. Within litter variability in offspring mass was not correlated with any reproductive variables in this latter population. These patterns may be explained by the fractional clutch hypothesis, the inability of females precisely to control investment among offspring or morphological constraints on reproduction.  相似文献
