Cold acclimation and photoinhibition of photosynthesis in Scots pine   总被引:13,自引:0,他引:13  
Cold acclimation of Scots pine did not affect the susceptibility of photosynthesis to photoinhibition. Cold acclimation did however cause a suppression of the rate of CO2 uptake, and at given light and temperature conditions a larger fraction of the photosystem II reaction centres were closed in cold-acclimated than in nonacclimated pine. Therefore, when assayed at the level of photosystem II reaction centres, i.e. in relation to the degree of photosystem closure, cold acclimation caused a significant increase in resistance to photoinhibition; at given levels of photosystem II closure the resistance to photoinhibition was higher after cold acclimation. This was particularly evident in measurements at 20° C. The amounts and activities of the majority of analyzed active oxygen scavengers were higher after cold acclimation. We suggest that this increase in protective enzymes and compounds, particularly Superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase, glutathione reductase and ascorbate of the chloroplasts, enables Scots pine to avoid excessive photoinhibition of photosynthesis despite partial suppression of photosynthesis upon cold acclimation. Cellobiose dehydrogenase (CDH, EC 1.1.99.18) is a glycoprotein having many biotechnological applications. In the present study, CDHs isolated from Phlebia lindtneri (PlCDH), Phanerochaete chrysosporium (PchCDH), Cerrena unicolor (CuCDH), and Pycnoporus sanguineus (PsCDH) were studied the first time for their ability to generate antioxidant and antimicrobial agents. The aim of the research was to evaluate the antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of systems composed of four CDHs and lactose or cellobiose as a reaction substrate. The free radical scavenging effect of free and immobilised enzymes was evaluated using the DPPH method. The lowest values of EC50 (10.04 ± 0.75 μg/ml) was noted for PlCDH/lactose and for PlCDH/cellobiose (12.06 ± 1.35 μg/ml). The EC50value reached 12.6 ± 1.51 μg/ml in the case of PsCDH/lactose and 15.96 ± 1.35 for PsCDH. The CDH preparations were also effectively immobilised in alginate (the immobilisation efficiency expressed as a protein yield ranged from 61.6 to 100 %). The operational stability expressed as a scavenging effect showed the possibility of using the alginate beads 4 times. Both the free and immobilised CDHs as well as the CDH/substrate were tested against Gram-negative Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853, and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 bacteria. All samples, except PlCDH, were potentially effective in suppression of bacterial growth. The highest percentage of inhibition (100 %) was obtained for S. aureus bacteria using PsCDH and PchCDH with lactose as a substrate, whereas a slightly lesser effect was observed for E. coli and P. aeruginosa bacterial cells, i.e. 64.1 % and 86.5 % (PsCDH) and 94.1 % and 41.4 % (PchCDH), respectively. Furthermore, the concentrations of the reaction products (aldonic acids and hydrogen peroxide) were quantified and the surface morphology of the alginate beads was analysed using SEM visualisation.  相似文献

Direct observations on foraging behaviour of scavenging lysianassid amphipods have been limited, and no previous study has examined the effect of food odour quantitatively on the behaviour. The present study recorded the swimming behaviour of the amphipod Scopelocheirus onagawae using videographic techniques before and after the introduction of food odour (amino acid solution). S. onagawae showed consistent nocturnal activity swimming at a high speed (16.8 cm s− 1) with an approximately straight trajectory in various directions before and after the introduction of odour in which the amino acid concentration was below the behavioural threshold concentration for this species (1.0 × 10− 7 mol l− 1). High speed multidirectional linear swimming is thought to be advantageous for these amphipods, enabling them to survey across a broad area. After the first encounter with the odour plume above the behavioural threshold concentration, the amphipods slowed down their swimming speed (ca. 9.7 cm s− 1) with a short time-lag (ca. 0.42 s), and thereafter they frequently turned so that they remained within the odour plume. Once moved out of the odour plume, the amphipods quickly returned to the plume with a shorter response time (ca. 0.1 s) than that in the first detection of the odour plume, suggesting that the sensory adaptation is involved with the tracking of the odour. Our study demonstrated that chemoreception is a major factor causing behavioural change in scavenging amphipods at the edge of the odour plume.  相似文献

The archaeopaleontological site of Dmanisi in Georgia, dated to ~1.8 Ma, provides evidence on the first hominin dispersal out of Africa, while the sites of Barranco León and Fuente Nueva-3 in Spain, dated to ~1.4 Ma, record the earliest hominin settlements in Europe. However, a number of issues related to the dispersal route, the climatic conditions and the ecological scenario of this dispersal event are subject to debate. In a recent paper in L’anthropologie, Agustí and Lordkipanidze (2019) proposed an alternative scenario for the arrival of hominins in the Caucasus, which they conceived as a forest refugium area during the Early Pleistocene, and discarded that their dispersal coincided with that of other members of the Ethiopian and Asian faunas, like the sabertooth Megantereon whitei or the giant hyena Pachycrocuta brevirostris. Our review of these issues suggests that: (i) the elongated sabers and reduced postcanine teeth of African M. whitei limited the ability of this predator to process the prey carcass, which resulted in scavengeable resources for the Dmanisi hominins; (ii) the mass estimate in excess of 100 kg obtained for the trochlear perimeter of the distal humerus of the hyena from Dmanisi shows that it can be confidently ascribed to the genus Pachycrocuta; (iii) the postcranial anatomy of the Dmanisi hominins was not advantageous for scavenging tree-stored prey; (iv) the laterally flattened upper canines of M. whitei could not withstand the loads that would result from climbing a prey carcass into a tree; (v) paleobotanical analyses suggest a temperate grassland ecosystem in Dmanisi, not dominant forest conditions, with enhanced aridity in the level of hominin occupation; (vi) similarly, the low frequency of arboreal pollen in the Levantine Corridor at ~1.8 Ma points to more arid conditions than today in this area; (vii) many archaeopaleontological sites of the Rift Valley and its extension towards the Red Sea, the Levant and the Caucasus show evidence of tectonic, volcanic and/or hydrothermal events; and (viii) the delay of 400 ka in the arrival of hominins in Western Europe did not result from a lower availability of scavengeable resources.  相似文献

Identifying tradeoffs between hunting and scavenging in an ecological context is important for understanding predatory guilds. In the past century, the feeding strategy of one of the largest and best-known terrestrial carnivores, Tyrannosaurus rex, has been the subject of much debate: was it an active predator or an obligate scavenger? Here we look at the feasibility of an adult T. rex being an obligate scavenger in the environmental conditions of Late Cretaceous North America, given the size distributions of sympatric herbivorous dinosaurs and likely competition with more abundant small-bodied theropods. We predict that nearly 50 per cent of herbivores would have been within a 55–85 kg range, and calculate based on expected encounter rates that carcasses from these individuals would have been quickly consumed by smaller theropods. Larger carcasses would have been very rare and heavily competed for, making them an unreliable food source. The potential carcass search rates of smaller theropods are predicted to be 14–60 times that of an adult T. rex. Our results suggest that T. rex and other extremely large carnivorous dinosaurs would have been unable to compete as obligate scavengers and would have primarily hunted large vertebrate prey, similar to many large mammalian carnivores in modern-day ecosystems.  相似文献

Traditional interpretations of hominid carcass acquisition strategies revolve around the debate over whether early hominids hunted or scavenged. A popular version of the scavenging scenario is the carnivore-hominid-carnivore hypothesis, which argues that hominids acquired animal resources primarily through passive opportunistic scavenging from felid-defleshed carcasses. Its main empirical support comes from the analysis of tooth mark frequency and distribution at the FLK Zinj site reported by Blumenschine (Blumenschine, 1995, J. Hum. Evol. 29, 21-51), in which it was shown that long bone mid-shafts exhibited a high frequency of tooth marks, only explainable if felids had preceded hominids in carcass defleshing. The present work shows that previous estimates of tooth marks on the FLK Zinj assemblage were artificially high, since natural biochemical marks were mistaken for tooth marks. Revised estimates are similar to those obtained in experiments in which hyenas intervene after humans in bone modification. Furthermore, analyses of percussion marks, notches, and breakage patterns provide data which are best interpreted as the results of hominid activity (hammerstone percussion and marrow extraction), based on experimentally-derived referential frameworks. These multiple lines of evidence support previous analyses of cut marks and their anatomical distribution; all indicate that hominids had early access to fleshed carcasses that were transported, processed, and accumulated at the FLK Zinj site.  相似文献

This study shows that, as with its intertidal counterpart, Nassarius festivus, the rate at which subtidal Nassarius siquijorensis moves towards food bait is similar for starved and well-fed individuals. This study also investigates another facet of nassariid nutrition related to the degree of hunger, i.e. the effect of simulated predation upon a feeding assemblage. Individuals which fed within 7 days, cease feeding and depart palatable food if crushed conspecifics are added. Between 7 and 13 days since its last meal, however, N. siquijorensis will feed when food is available, despite the possibility of predation. For the intertidal N. festivus, the critical time for hunger to override the risk of predation is between 14 and 21 days. The difference between subtidal and intertidal species may be due to a difference, in terms of days, that a meal can provide for their energy expenditure, particularly with regard to respiration. The bigger, subtidal, N. siquijorensis needs to feed more frequently than the smaller, intertidal, N. festivus.  相似文献

The diet of brown skuas (Catharacta antarctica lonnbergi) on Bird Island, South Georgia was assessed using a combination of stable isotope analysis (SIA) and mixing model techniques. We found evidence that individual specialisation in diet of adult brown skuas was related to timing of breeding, which may reflect differences in intrinsic quality. Adults with more enriched 13C values hatched chicks earlier than those with depleted 13C values. Individuals with enriched 13C fed predominantly on Antarctic fur seal (Arctocephalus gazella) carrion and placenta while those with lower ratios appeared to rely more on burrowing petrels (e.g. Antarctic prions Pachyptila desolata). Individual foraging differences clearly influenced timing of breeding and potentially the reproductive output of breeding pairs. We confirmed that the main components of the diet of brown skuas during incubation are, in decreasing order of importance, Antarctic fur seal placenta, burrowing petrels and fur seal muscle. In addition, we identified fur seal faeces in the diet during this stage, which had not been detected previously by traditional sampling methods. Finally we identified a correlation in δ13C values between pair members, attributable to the influence of courtship feeding of females by males, or assortative mating according to foraging preference or intrinsic quality.  相似文献

As a result of an interest in natural derived metabolites, lignicolous fungi have taken on great importance in biochemical investigations. In the present study, antioxidative screening analyses have included in vitro testing of different extracts (aqueous, methanol, chloroform) of four fungal species using three different assays: Fe2+/ascorbate-induced lipid peroxidation by TBA assay, the neutralisation of OH· radicals and the radical scavenging capacity with the DPPHk]assay. TLC analysis confirmed the existance of phenolics in the extracts, but also indicates the presence of some other compounds. The obtained results indicate that MeOH extracts manifested a degree of activity higher than that of CHCl3 extracts. With respect to antioxidative activity, the extracts can be ranged in the following declining order: G. lucidum, G. applanatum, M. giganteus and F. velutipes. These results suggest that analyzed fungi are of potential interest as sources of strong natural antioxidants that could be used in the food industries and nutrition.  相似文献
