Cimicifuga simplex (Ranunculaceae) has four types of individuals, differing in their sex expression: there are individuals with hermaphroditic, hermaphroditic and male (andromonoecious), only male, or only female flowers. Purely female individuals appear during the early part of the flowering period of the population, and males during the later part. Strong protandry in hermaphroditic flowers causes a shift in functional sex ratio in the population over time. This facilitates the evolution and maintenance of small proportions of unisexual individuals in the population. A hypothesis developed from this case of multiple sex expression predicts dichogamy as a near-universal feature of andro-and gynomonoecious, androdioecious, and gynodioecious species, and also specific temporal distributions for each sex form depending upon the form of dichogamy. Results of tests on large sets of species strongly support the relevance of this hypothesis.  相似文献

Aspects of the morphology of II species of Triviidae are described, including the living animal, shell, radula, mantle complex, central nervous system and reproductive system. Interspecific differences in radular morphology are important in distinguishing closely allied species. Trivia aperta, T. costata and T. verhoeft are protandric hermaphrodites while T. caluariola, T. neglccta, T. pellucidula, T. rubra, T. solandri and T. suavis are gonochoric. The elaboration of the receptaculum seminis varies between species. In T. aperta, T. calvariola, T. neglecta and T. who& the receptaculum is undivided while in T. costafa, T. pellucidula, T. solandri and T. suavis there are two or more lobes of the receptaculum.  相似文献

Synopsis The Red Sea razorfish, Xyrichtys pentadactylus, a territorial haremic labrid with dominance hierarchies within the harems. Theory predicts that primary males (fish developing initially as males) should be rare or nonexistent in haremic territorial species because the larger secondary males (males which have undergone sex and/or color change) limit access to females. Histological examination of gonads of 95 specimens showed that all males are derived from females by sex change (i.e. they are secondary males). During five months of field studies 100% of more than 200 observed matings were pair spawnings — the usual mating practice for monandric (having one type of male) species. Sex change in females was induced by male removal in nature. Isolation of four groups of females in aquaria showed that the largest female in the social group changes sex in the absence of a male, demonstrating that sex change is socially-controlled in this species.  相似文献

Summary Two types of hermaphroditism were experimentally induced in genetically female fowls by grafting of embryonic testes in embryos. Of the 27 hermaphrodites observed during the 8 months after hatching, 20 possessed a right testis and a left ovary and 7 a right testis and a left ovotestis. The testes and ovotestes contained seminiferous tubules with a more or less developed germ cell complement, attaining in many cases the early spermatid stage. The interstitial tissue was poorly functional, as shown by the absence of male secondary sex characters. The ovary or ovarian part of the ovotestes possessed numerous small ovarian follicles. The female arrangement of the plumage and the absence of spurs demonstrated the secretion of oestrogens. A mechanism is proposed for explaining this partial masculinization of genetically female gonads, a phenomenon which occurs during the period of embryonic sex differentiation, and is responsible for this experimental true hermaphroditism.  相似文献

Synbranchus marmoratus , the 'swamp eel', is a protogynous diandric fish. The primary and secondary males can be distinguished from each other easily by differences in gonadal morphology. Primary males have lobular, unrestricted testes with central efferent ducts. The secondary male has a 'lamellar' testis, efferent ducts are present in the ventral region (new formation), lateral supports and it is covered by the former ovarian capsule. The length of primary male varies from 13 to 88 cm while secondary males range from 56 to 91 cm. Transitional individuals vary between 45 and 60 cm in length. The swamp eel population studied is composed of 80% primary males and 20% secondary males. Although gonadosomatic indices are always higher in primary males, they increase in secondary ones as the newly acquired stage progresses. The lamellar organization of the gonad of secondary males, the absence of this kind of testis in individuals smaller than 56 cm, and the presence of hermaphroditic fish, is evidence for protogyny in this species.  相似文献

Synopsis The sexual pattern of the zebra goby Lythrypnus zebra, is an apparent exception to sex allocation theory. Most L. zebra are simultaneous hermaphrodites (i.e., have active female and male gonadal tissue), yet it appears they do not reproduce as males and females simultaneously. Understanding the maintenance of simultaneous hermaphroditism in L. zebra could expand sex allocation theory. In this study, I used a comparison with the blue-banded goby, Lythrypnus dalli, a sympatric congener with a qualitatively similar sexual pattern, to investigate the role of male spawning rate, body size and sexual flexibility in determining the sexual pattern of L. zebra and to isolate differences between the species that might explain their differing sexual patterns. Using field measurements of male nesting success, I found no differences between the species in the body size of nesting males suggesting that large size is associated with successful male reproduction in both species. In addition, nesting males spawned at approximately three times the rate of females in both species; thus, reproduction via male function can be equally advantageous relative to adopting the female role. However, the nest longevity of L. zebra males was shorter than that of L. dalli males, suggesting reproduction via male function may be less reliable in L. zebra. Finally, under laboratory conditions, L. zebra females tended to prefer large mates, and L. zebra were able to re-allocate in both directions, exhibiting a greater capacity to switch than L. dalli. Given these results, I suggest that switching between the sexes plays a greater role in maintaining simultaneous hermaphroditism in L. zebra than L. dalli, perhaps because male reproduction is not as consistent in L. zebra. Sexual flexibility may be an important factor affecting patterns of sex allocation, generally.  相似文献

Synopsis The reproductive biology of the concha wrasse, Nelabrichthys ornatus, at Tristan da Cunha in the South Atlantic Ocean is described. Histological evidence shows that the species is a monandric protogynous hermaphrodite. N. ornatus displays full permanent sexual dichromatism with all males occurring in the upper size classes of the population. Size specific habitat preference is described. Aspects of the mating system of the species resemble a lek although the possibility of mating site selection by females is not discounted. Spawning groups have a sex ratio of between 4 and 7 females per male.  相似文献

A large sample of the pycriogonid Anoplodactylus portus , collected from the Pacific side of the Panama Canal Zone, contains a high percentage of gynandromorphs. The literature on aquatic arthropod gynandromorphs is outlined. The nature and variations of the sexual mosaic population are described and discussed. The several morphological differences between normal and mosaic members of the population are illustrated, and the possible origin of these gynandromorphs is discussed.  相似文献

Rhynchospio glutaea (Ehlers, 1897 Ehlers, E. 1897. Polychaeten. Ergebnisse der Hamburger Magalhaensischen Sammelreise 1892/93. L. Friederichsen & Co., Hamburg, Germany. [Google Scholar]), Rhynchospio arenincola Hartman, 1936 Hartman, O. 1936. New species of Spionidae (Annelida Polychaeta) from the coast of California. University of California Publications in Zoology 41, 4552. [Google Scholar] and Rhynchospio arenincola asiatica Chlebovitsch, 1959 Chlebovitsch, V.V. 1959. Species of Polychaeta worms from the Kurile Islands, which are new or recorded for the first time in the USSR fauna. Zoologichesky Zhurnal 38, 167181. [Google Scholar], originally described from Strait of Magellan, California, and South Kurile Islands respectively, appear similar to each other in adult morphology. These species and subspecies have been considered by some authors as subjective synonyms and are here referred to as members of the R. glutaea complex. Sequence data of four gene fragments (2465 bp in total) of the mitochondrial 16S rDNA, nuclear 18S and 28S rDNA, and Histone 3 have shown that R. glutaea complex individuals from the South West Atlantic (Argentina), North East Pacific (British Columbia and Oregon) and North West Pacific (South Korea) were genetically distant and not conspecific. These data also indicate that R. arenincola from North America and R. aff. asiatica from South Korea are more closely related to each other, and both are closer to R. glutaea from South America than to R. nhatrangi from Vietnam: nhatrangi (glutaea (arenincola-aff. asiatica)). Adults of the R. glutaea complex are hermaphrodites and the arrangement of gametes is suggested to be a crucial reproductive character for distinguishing these species. Based on this character, two species of the complex are apparent in the North West Pacific: R. asiatica Chlebovitsch, 1959 Chlebovitsch, V.V. 1959. Species of Polychaeta worms from the Kurile Islands, which are new or recorded for the first time in the USSR fauna. Zoologichesky Zhurnal 38, 167181. [Google Scholar] stat. nov. from the Kurile Islands (not analysed here) and an unnamed species from the mainland coast of Asia (here referred to as R. aff. asiatica). Adult morphology of R. asiatica stat. nov. is briefly described and illustrated. The lectotype and the type locality of the species on Iturup Is. are established for the first time. An identification key is provided to the 10 currently recognized Rhynchospio species.  相似文献

Sexual patterns of teleosts are extremely diverse and include both gonochorism and hermaphroditism. As a protogynous hermaphroditic fish, all orange-spotted groupers (Epinephelus coioides) develop directly into females, and some individuals change sex to become functional males later in life. This study investigated gonadal restructuring, shifts in sex hormone levels and gene profiles of cultured mature female groupers during the first (main) breeding season of 2019 in Huizhou, China (22° 42′ 02.6″ N, 114° 32′ 10.1″ E). Analysis of gonadal restructuring revealed that females with pre-vitellogenic ovaries underwent vitellogenesis, spawning and regression and then returned to the pre-vitellogenic stage in the late breeding season, at which point some changed sex to become males via the intersex gonad stage. A significant decrease in the level of serum 17β-estradiol (E2) was observed during ovary regression but not during sex change, whereas serum 11-ketotestosterone (11-KT) concentrations increased significantly during sex change with the highest concentration in newly developed males. Consistent with serum hormone changes, a significant decrease in cyp19a1a expression was observed during ovary regression but not during sex change, whereas the expression of cyp11c1 and hsd11b2 increased significantly during sex change. Interestingly, hsd11b2 but not cyp11c1 was significantly upregulated from the pre-vitellogenic ovary stage to the early intersex gonad stage. These results suggest that a decrease in serum E2 concentration and downregulation of cyp19a1a expression are not necessary to trigger the female-to-male transformation, whereas increased 11-KT concentration and upregulation of hsd11b2 expression may be key events for the initiation of sex change in the orange-spotted grouper.  相似文献
