To identify processes that might account for differences in growth rates of rhodophytes under constant and dynamic light supply, we examined nonequilibrium gas exchange by measuring time courses of photoinduction, loss of photoinduction, and respiration rates immediately after the light–dark transition. Using the rhodophyte species Palmaria palmata (Huds.) Lamour and Lomentaria articulata (Huds.) Lyngb., we compared the effects of growth-saturating constant photon flux density (PFD) (95 μmol photons · m?2· s?1) to those of a dynamic light supply modeled on canopy movements in the intertidal zone (25 μmol photons · m?2· s?1 background PFD plus light flecks of 350 μmol photons · m?2· s?1, 0.1 Hz). The time required for P. palmata and L. articulata to be fully photoinduced was not affected by the dynamics of light supply. L. articulata required only 6 min of illumination with either fluctuating or constant light to be completely induced compared to 20 min for P. palmata. The latter species also lost photoinduction more rapidly than did L. articulata in the dark. There was no significant decline in photoinduction state for either species at the background PFD. The time courses of respiration after illumination with constant and fluctuating light were significantly different for P. palmata but not for L. articulata when the total photon dose was equal. In general, gas exchange of P. palmata appeared to be particularly sensitive to the temporal distribution of light supply whereas that of L. articulata was sensitive to the amplitude of variations, being photoinhibited at high PFD. These results are discussed in terms of the different mechanisms of inorganic carbon acquisition in the two species.  相似文献

Phylogeography has provided a new approach to the analysis of the postglacial history of a wide range of taxa but, to date, little is known about the effect of glacial periods on the marine biota of Europe. We have utilized a combination of nuclear, plastid and mitochondrial genetic markers to study the biogeographic history of the red seaweed Palmaria palmata in the North Atlantic. Analysis of the nuclear rDNA operon (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2), the plastid 16S-trnI-trnA-23S-5S, rbcL-rbcS and rpl12-rps31-rpl9 regions and the mitochondrial cox2-3 spacer has revealed the existence of a previously unidentified marine refugium in the English Channel, along with possible secondary refugia off the southwest coast of Ireland and in northeast North America and/or Iceland. Coalescent and mismatch analyses date the expansion of European populations from approximately 128,000 BP and suggest a continued period of exponential growth since then. Consequently, we postulate that the penultimate (Saale) glacial maximum was the main event in shaping the biogeographic history of European P. palmata populations which persisted throughout the last (Weichselian) glacial maximum (c. 20,000 BP) in the Hurd Deep, an enigmatic trench in the English Channel.  相似文献

The movements of larvae between marine populations are difficult to follow directly and have been the subject of much controversy, especially in the Caribbean. The debate centres on the degree to which populations are demographically open, such that depleted populations can be replenished by recruitment from distant healthy populations, or demographically closed and thus in need of local management. Given the depressed state of many tropical reef populations, the understanding of these movements now bears critically on the number, placement, and size of marine reserves. Most genetic analyses assume that dispersal patterns have been stable for thousands of generations, thus they commonly reflect past colonization histories more than ongoing dispersal. Recently developed multilocus genotyping approaches, however, have the demonstrated ability to detect both migration and population isolation over far shorter timescales. Previously, we developed five microsatellite markers and demonstrated them to be both Mendelian and coral-specific. Using these markers and Bayesian analyses, we show here that populations of the imperiled reef-building coral, Acropora palmata, have experienced little or no recent genetic exchange between the western and the eastern Caribbean. Puerto Rico is identified as an area of mixing between the two subregions. As a consequence of this regional isolation, populations in the western and eastern Caribbean should have the potential to adapt to local conditions and will require population-specific management strategies.  相似文献

Light has been identified as one of the main factors affecting seaweed ecophysiology. We investigated the dependence of nutrient metabolism on sun and shade light conditions and whether episodes of upwelling of nutrient‐rich subsuperficial water could reduce the summer nutrient limitation driving physiological changes in Palmaria palmata (L.) Kuntze. We measured the major nutrient pools, photosynthetic pigments, and light curves, under sun and shade conditions during a summer period when one upwelling was recorded. The redundancy analysis (RDA) produced two clear groups: sun‐ and shade‐acclimated algae. Light was the major predictive factor. Sun‐acclimated algae exhibited higher carbon (C) and lower nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) content in association with the storage of floridoside (main C reserve) to benefit from higher irradiance (under nutrient limitation). Among N pools, N reserves (phycoerythrin, nitrate) were a lower proportion of the total N in sun‐acclimated algae, suggesting their degradation to fulfill the N demands of the cell. The orthophosphate content was also lower in sun‐acclimated algae, indicating its utilization as a nutrient reserve. In contrast, N within cell walls and membranes and chl a contributed to a similar proportion of the total N in sun‐ and shade‐acclimated algae, suggesting a response to sustain cell integrity. Transient high nutrient concentration due to the upwelling was unrelated to the nutrient content of the thallus. The storage of C as floridoside from high light exposure was shown to be the driving force for the metabolic adjustment of P. palmata at the end of summer before the onset of dormancy.  相似文献

Riccia fruticulosa O.F.Müll., 1782 from Norway is a valid name, referring to Riccardia palmata (Hedw.) Carruth. In 1785 Dickson misidentified British plants of a blue Metzgeria as R. fruticulosa . The European blue species of Metzgeria is conspecific with M. violacea (Ach.) Dumort., which replaces M. fruticulosa auct. The true origin of the type of Jungermannia violacea Ach., 1805 is probably Tierra del Fuego (rather than Dusky Bay, New Zealand), where the species is widespread. Reports from Australasia, Asia and Africa are all erroneous. The blue colour of Jungermanniales is found only in living plants and is derived from the oil-bodies. The dependence of the carbon concentrating mechanism of Palmaria palmata (L.) Kuntze on the growth light level was examined 1) to determine whether or not there is a threshold photon flux density (PFD) at which the inorganic carbon uptake mechanism can operate and 2) to attempt to quantify the relative energetic costs of acclimation to the two different limiting factors, PFD and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) concentration. Plants were grown at six PFDs: 5, 25, 50, 75, 95, and 125 μmol photons. m?2.s?1. Growth rates increased with increasing PFD from 5 to 50 μmol photons. m?2. s?1 and were light-saturated at 75, 95, and 125 μmol photons. m?2. s?1 Values of δ13C increased continuously with increasing growth PFD and did not saturate over the range of light levels tested. Time-resolved fluorescence characteristics indicated a progressive photoacclimation below 50 μmol photons. m?2. s?1. Analysis of chlorophyll fluorescence induction showed three levels of light use efficirncy associated with growth at 5 or 25, 50, and >75 μmol photons. m?2. s?1. The light-haruesting efficiency was inversely proportional to the effectiveness of DIC acquisition in plants grown at the six PFDs. These data were interpreted to indicate that there is a physiological tradeoff between photosynthetic efficiency and bicarbonate use in this species.  相似文献

Weaving hats withjipi,Carludovica palmata (Cyclanthaceae) has built the local economy and cultural identity for the people of Becal, in the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico. They obtain most material from cultivated sources, weave in man-made caves, and market the goods to commercial centers. BecauseJipi does not appear to deplete the soil, they do not need to clear more land for sustainable production. Although weaving traditionally served as the main source of income and social activity in Becal, interest in weaving is declining as the town modernizes. Although profits gained from weaving add to family earnings, because of the many hands through which the hat passes, this income remains low compared to the final selling prices. Thus, many who have the opportunity to pursue other careers are doing so. However, for rural communities, without other earning options, weaving may provide an economically and environmentally advantageous way to use the land.  相似文献

The complete large subunit rRNA sequences from the red algae Palmaria palmata and Gracilaria verrucosa, and from the nucleomorph of the cryptomonad Guillardia theta, were determined in order to assess their phylogenetic relationships relative to each other and to other eukaryotes. Neighbor-joining, maximum-parsimony, and maximum-likelihood trees were constructed on the basis of small subunit rRNA, large subunit rRNA, and a combination of both molecules. Our results support the hypothesis that the cryptomonad plastid is derived from a primitive red alga, in that an ancient common ancestor of rhodophytes and cryptomonad nucleomorphs is indicated. This cluster shows some affinity with chlorobionts, which could point to a monophyletic origin of green and red plastids. However, the exact branching order of the crown eukaryotes remains uncertain and further research is required.  相似文献

以Phenyl_sepharose作为柱填料 ,用streamline柱层析技术从红藻 (Palmariapalmata (Lannaeus)Kuntze)中规模分离捕光色素蛋白———R_藻红蛋白。由于不是传统的从层析柱上方进样 ,而是用泵将样品从streamline层析柱的下方加样 (从下至上 ) ,因而解决了用一般层析柱分离R_藻红蛋白时海藻抽提液中大量的粘性多糖堵塞层析柱的难题。用P .palmata粗提液上样后 ,分别用 0 .2mol/L、0 .1mol/L和 0 .0 5mol/L的 (NH4) 2 SO4溶液从相反的方向 (即从上到下 )洗脱层析柱 ,发现这些洗脱液中的藻红蛋白纯度已经较高。然后将洗脱液透析去盐 ,用阴离子交换柱层析 (Q_sepharose)进一步纯化。经过这两次柱层析后 ,R_藻红蛋白的纯度 (OD565/OD2 80 )超过 3.5 ,高于一般认可的R_藻红蛋白的纯度标准 3.2 ;产率为每克冷冻P .palmata可纯化 0 .12 2mg高纯度的R_藻红蛋白 ,比使用一般分离方法的产率要高 10倍。这些结果表明 ,使用本文报道的方法纯化藻红蛋白 ,将会使作为生化检测试剂的藻红蛋白市场价格大幅度下降。  相似文献
