In cohort studies, longitudinal changes in individuals are often studied. The sample size requirements are then directly related to the responsiveness of the measuring instrument/scale, which is defined as the ability to detect a clinically meaningful change over time. We demonstrate that whatever the index used to assess responsiveness (effect size, standardized response mean, Guyatt's index), it is enhanced by an increase in the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), which assesses the reproducibility of the measuring instrument/scale. Therefore, an improvement in reproducibility leads to an increase in responsiveness and thus an increase in power. In the special case of one observation per subject and time, we also prove that an increase in the ICC reduces the coefficient of variation of the estimators of the standardized response mean and of Guyatt's index. This result has also been observed for the effect size on an example. Such a result implies that the better the reproducibility, the lower the sample size requirements for confident statistical inference of responsiveness results.  相似文献

Summary Eleven F1 hybrid cultivars of cauliflower, representing a range of maturity types, were examined for their responsiveness to anther culture. Embryos were produced from each of the cultivars tested, and the mean embryo yield varied from 82.2 embryos per 100 anthers cultured for cv Dova to 0.6 embryos for cv Serrano. Variation between genotypes and between plants within a genotype was significant, both in terms of embryo yield and percentage responsive anthers. Autumn and winter maturing cauliflowers were generally more responsive than summer types. Embryo yields were enhanced by culturing anthers on solid rather than on liquid media. An increase in concentration of 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) from 0.1 to 0.3 mg/l also increased embryo yield. Embryo yield was doubled when anthers were cultured on solid media containing 0.3 mg/l 2,4-D compared to liquid media containing 0.1 mg/l 2,4-D. Although bud size alone did not have a significant effect on embryo production, genotype x bud size and plant x bud size (within genotype) interactions were significant. Estimation of the variance components demonstrated that, apart from the residual plate-to-plate variation, variation between plants was the largest source of variation, accounting for approximately 30% of total variance. Plant x bud size (within genotype) interaction accounted for 18% of total variance and genotypic differences for approximately 8%.  相似文献

In honey bees, complex behaviours such as associative learning correlate with responsiveness to sucrose. In these behaviours, the subjective evaluation of a sucrose stimulus influences the behavioural performance. Habituation is a well-known form of non-associative learning. In bees, the proboscis extension response can be habituated by repeatedly stimulating the antennae with a low sucrose concentration. A high sucrose concentration can dishabituate the response. This study tests whether habituation correlates with responsiveness to sucrose in bees of different behavioural states and in bees which are habituated with different sucrose concentrations. Habituation and dishabituation in newly emerged bees, 5-day-old bees and foragers strongly correlated with responsiveness to sucrose. Bees with high responsiveness to sucrose displayed a lower degree of habituation and showed greater dishabituation than bees with low responsiveness. The degree of habituation and dishabituation also depended on the concentration of the habituation stimulus. These experiments demonstrate for the first time in a non-associative learning paradigm that the subjective strength of a sucrose stimulus determines the behavioural performance. Adult titi monkeys react to novelty more strongly and cautiously than other New World primates. Developmental changes in responsiveness were assessed by presenting complex novel objects to family groups consisting of 11 male-female pairs and their adult (31–33 months), subadult (20–23 months), and juvenile offspring (10–16 months). Food and a simple block were included as control conditions. Differences in attraction to novel objects were inversely related to age. Juveniles approached more objects, more quickly, and spent more time near them than older subjects. Parents, the least responsive age-group, seemed more indifferent than cautious. Age-effects were smaller with the block, and negligible with food. Summary Eight inbred lines of Brussels sprouts and ten F1 hybrids derived from them were tested for their response to anther culture. From 5–19 plants per genotype were tested, and each plant was tested on 3–6 separate occasions. Results from the inbred lines were broadly similar to those from the F1 hybrids, despite the inbreds producing fewer buds and having a higher frequency of anther deformities. The maximum embryo yield from an inbred line was 215 embryos per 100 anthers, and from a hybrid was 275. From estimation of the variance components it was calculated that, for both inbreds and hybrids, about half the total variation was genetic whereas variation due to plants within genotypes and to occasions within plants were each about 13% of the total. The narrow sense heritability of responsiveness to anther culture (estimated by the proportion of variation between inbred lines which was genetic) was 0.48, and there was partial dominance for this character. In three cases the hybrid outyielded the better inbred, and this heterosis may well be due to dispersed dominant genes.  相似文献

Female adults of the rice leaf bug Trigonotylus caelestialium (Kirkaldy) (Heteroptera: Miridae) produce non-diapause eggs under long-day conditions, whereas they produce diapause eggs under short-day conditions. These egg-production modes change following a photoperiodic change from long-day to short-day conditions or vice versa, with individual variations in responsiveness shown in the time from the photoperiodic change to the mode change. Strains of this insect with higher or lower responsiveness to photoperiodic change were established after several generations of selection, indicating that the individual variation has a genetic basis. The selected strains that were more responsive and less responsive to one photoperiodic change were found to be less responsive and more responsive to the opposite photoperiodic change, respectively, indicating a significant negative correlation between responsiveness to reciprocal photoperiodic changes. The selected strains also had a significantly different incidence of diapause-egg producers in stationary photoperiods compared to a non-selected strain, showing that selections for responsiveness to photoperiodic change were essentially the same as selections for a higher or lower incidence of diapause-egg producers. These results indicate that responsiveness to photoperiodic change is one aspect of the tendency to produce diapause or non-diapause eggs.  相似文献

Summary The rate of egg laying in Tribolium castaneum is affected by the quality of the environment and can thus serve not only as a component of fitness of the individual, but also as an adaptation to the long-term survival of the population. In an attempt to determine whether it is an independent genetic character, selection for high and low rates of response was carried jut in beetles from three wild populations. When tests were done on virgin females, and responsiveness, corrected for scale effects, was used as the criterion for selection, separation between the lines was achieved in one generation. It is suggested that in natural populations of Tribolium, the responsiveness of the rate of egg laying to the quality of the environment is controlled by a small number of genes.  相似文献

RFLP segregation analyses were performed on a F2 population and two F1 microspore-derived populations from the same cross between a microspore culture-responsive parent (Topas) and a non-responsive parent (Westar). A total of 145 loci were detected with 87 cDNA clones. Eighty-two markers were common across all three populations. A total of 66 markers was assembled into 18 linkage groups and 16 markers remained unlinked. Segregation distortions were significant for 29% of the markers in the F2 population and 23% and 31% in microspore-derived populations M3 and M5, respectively. An equivalent number of markers showed biased segregation towards each parental allele in the F2 population while more markers showed a significant deviation from the expected Mendelian ratio towards the responsive parent in both microspore-derived populations. Different subsets of markers showed segregation distortions in the three populations indicating that the selective pressures leading to microsporederived plants are different from those acting during selfing of the F1. Linkage groups 1 and 18 were identified as putative chromosomal regions associated with microspore-culture responsiveness.  相似文献

Lactating female rats without their pups exhibit lower HPA responsiveness to stress than nonlactating females. However, responsiveness to stress is similar when lactating females are tested with their pups and the stressor involves a potential threat to the offspring. This study constitutes the first comparison of stress responsiveness in lactating and nonlactating female nonhuman primates. Subjects were 53 multiparous female free-ranging rhesus macaques. Approximately half of the females were lactating and half were nonpregnant/nonlactating. Blood samples were obtained after capture and after overnight housing in an individual cage. Lactating females were tested with their infants. Lactating females had significantly higher plasma cortisol levels than nonlactating females on both days. Having or not having an infant was also a better predictor of plasma cortisol levels among all females than their age, dominance rank, group of origin, time of day at which the sample was obtained, and time elapsed since beginning of the sampling procedure or since anesthesia. Plasma cortisol levels of lactating females were not significantly correlated with post-partum stage or with the cortisol levels of their infants. Capture, handling, and individual housing in a cage are powerful psychological stressors for free-ranging primates. We suggest that the higher plasma cortisol levels exhibited by lactating females reflect greater responsiveness to stress associated with perception of risks to infants. Hyporesponsiveness to stress may not be a general characteristic of lactation in all mammalian species, but a short-term effect of infant suckling that is most apparent with stressors unrelated to the offspring.  相似文献

Androgen hormones have been shown to facilitate competitive ability in courtship and territorial behavior, while suppressing paternal behavior. The rock-pool blenny, Parablennius parvicornis, provides an excellent model to study the proximate regulation of such a trade-off between territorial and parental behavior, because nest-holder males of this species display these behaviors simultaneously. A field study was carried out in which territorial nest holder males were either treated with long-lasting implants filled with 11-ketotestosterone (11-KT) or with control implants. Males treated with 11-KT showed a higher frequency of aggressive behavior, were more responsive to aggressive challenges, and were more persistent in aggressive behavior than control males. In addition, territories were larger in males treated with 11-KT than in controls. We found evidence for incompatibility between defense of a large territory and high levels of parental behavior. However, contrary to expectation, 11-KT did not suppress parental behavior. We suggest that trade-offs between territorial and parental behavior may not be regulated by androgen hormones but may result from a time constraint in the individual's activity budget.  相似文献
