Aspects of the biology and host range of Sibinia fastigiata Clark (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) were studied to assess its safety for release in Australia as a biological control agent of the weed Mimosa pigra L . (Mimosaceae) . Larvae feed on the seeds and adults on open flowers of their host . Adults oviposit on to immature seeds 3 mm long or less and hence seeds of this length and maturity were used in the host range tests and for rearing . Females are shown to avoid previously attacked seeds enhancing their effectiveness as seed destroyers . Survival of adults was higher when provided with open flowers . The host range was determined using laboratory control - choice oviposition tests on excised plant material and , in the field in the native range , no - choice oviposition tests on living plants , surveys of adults on plants , and breeding of insects from pods of plants of various legume species . The control - choice oviposition tests employed a new design in which the control plant alone was offered to the insects followed by a choice of test plants species . Other than M. pigra, only one plant species was acceptable for oviposition , the closely related M. asperata. Larval development also occurs on M. asperata and this host is occasionally used in the field . This insect was approved for release in March 1997 .  相似文献

Sporocysts of Schistosoma mansoni (PR1 strain) survive and grow in Biomphalaria glabrata PR albino strain snails, whereas they are encapsulated and die in B. glabrata 10R2 strain snails. These processes also occur in an in vitro system in which the only living cells are those of sporocysts and snail hemolymph. Hemocytes of the susceptible snail are normally not effective in damaging sporocysts. However, when the encounter occurred in the presence of cell-free plasma from resistant snails, previously impotent hemocytes severely damaged sporocysts in 24 hr. The cytotoxic capacity of resistant strain hemocytes was not altered by plasma from susceptible snails. Furthermore, it was retained even when plasma was replaced by culture medium free of snail components. The nature of the plasma factor(s) which facilitated damage by otherwise impotent hemocytes is discussed, and evidence is evaluated for the hypothesis that snail resistance is dependent upon the specificity of cytophilic factors present both in the plasma and on the hemocyte plasma membranes.  相似文献

The present paper elaborates on the concepts, describes the algorithm and provides illustrations from syntaxonomy. One approach to predicting non-target attack by potential biological control agents is to first describe their fundamental host ranges and then to predict how it will be expressed under postrelease field conditions. In this paper, we illustrate how the fundamental host range can be estimated experimentally by excluding possible limiting factors such as time-dependent effects. The example we use is a host-specificity study of a leaf-tying moth (Gelechiidae: Evippe sp. #1) which was being assessed for the biological control of mesquite (Leguminosae: Prosopis spp.) in Australia. Females oviposited all eggs on plants, mostly into cracks and fissures. First instar larvae leaf-mined and subsequent instars leaf-tied. Oviposition was not host-specific in cage trials, although ten times more eggs were laid on Prosopis than on non-targets. The fundamental host range for initiation of larval feeding was restricted to Prosopis and Leucaena leucocephala which both belong to the same tribe, and the fundamental host range for complete larval development was restricted to Prosopis . We predict that if released in Australia Evippe sp. #1 will only attack Prosopis spp., although low levels of 'indiscriminate' oviposition might occur on other taxa, and might result in initiation of feeding on L. leucocephala .  相似文献

Power and sample-size formulas for testing the homogeneity of relative risks using the score method are presented. The homogeneity score test (Gart, 1985, Biometrika 72, 673-677) is formally equivalent to the Pearson chi-square test, although they look different. Results of this paper may be useful in assessing the validity of the model of a common relative risk before combining several 2 x 2 tables or in designing a prospective study for detecting heterogeneity of relative risks.  相似文献

目的:通过低压舱模拟飞行环境下被试人员生理指标的变化,探讨飞行员脑力负荷的变化规律。方法:21名男性志愿者参加低压舱模拟飞行的实验过程,座舱内的压力高度模拟2400米高空压力,持续时间1.5h,重复两次,中间出舱休息0.5h,检测指标为心率变异性(HRV),心理运动测验以及NASA—TLX主观评定量表。结果:研究表明,NASA-TLX量表从主观感受上很好的反映了低压舱模拟飞行后脑力负荷的变化,HRV、心理运动测验也发生了相应的变化。结论:本研究结果提示低压舱模拟飞行所导致的脑力负荷变化是具有一定规律的,生理心理测验可能是测定变化规律的一种间接方法。  相似文献

Predictors of Species Sensitivity to Fragmentation   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We reviewed empirical data and hypotheses derived from demographic, optimal foraging, life-history, community, and biogeographic theory for predicting the sensitivity of species to habitat fragmentation. We found 12 traits or trait groups that have been suggested as predictors of species sensitivity: population size; population fluctuation and storage effect; dispersal power; reproductive potential; annual survival; sociality; body size; trophic position; ecological specialisation, microhabitat and matrix use; disturbance and competition sensitive traits; rarity; and biogeographic position. For each trait we discuss the theoretical justification for its sensitivity to fragmentation and empirical evidence for and against the suitability of the trait as a predictor of fragmentation sensitivity. Where relevant, we also discuss experimental design problems for testing the underlying hypotheses. There is good empirical support for 6 of the 12 traits as sensitivity predictors: population size; population fluctuation and storage effects; traits associated with competitive ability and disturbance sensitivity in plants; microhabitat specialisation and matrix use; rarity in the form of low abundance within a habitat; and relative biogeographic position. Few clear patterns emerge for the remaining traits from empirical studies if examined in isolation. Consequently, interactions of species traits and environmental conditions must be considered if we want to be able to predict species sensitivity to fragmentation. We develop a classification of fragmentation sensitivity based on specific trait combinations and discuss the implications of the results for ecological theory.  相似文献
