Erpetoichthys calabaricus has unusual cranio‐vertebral anatomy, with an occipital centrum forming a component part of the compound basiexoccipital bone, and a ‘free‐floating’ occipital neural arch that differs from accessory arches found in some teleosts. The occipital neural arch bears autapomorphic lateral projections that articulate with small rod‐like bones resembling the spatial relationship of parapophyses and ribs, a feature normally restricted to vertebral centra. Based on analyses of cleared and stained specimens, computed tomography and histology, it is hypothesized that the lateral projections and associated rod‐shaped bones are structures that share developmental homologies to the unique ‘dorsal ribs’ of Polypteridae.  相似文献

The living holostean fish Lepisosteus and the closely related Atractosteus offer a unique opportunity to study the development and homology of the ganoine-covered scales typical of early groups of actinopterygian fishes. Unlike the living chondrostean Polypterus , the scales of lepisosteids lack dentine and thus the role of the dentine, epidermis and mesodermal mesenchyme can be compared. Formation of the 'preganoine' is shown for the first time in Lepisosteus. Initial results show that in Lepisosteus ganoine is formed on the inner surface of a cell layer, apparently mesenchymal in origin, proliferating deep to the epidermal basement membrane. If this is correct ganoine in Lepisosteus is mesodermal and its formation has changed significantly from the pattern in the closely related fossil Semionotidae where dentine is present and is presumably involved in ganoine formation. The canals of Williamson in early fossil fishes were formed by migrating cells that played a major role in bone morphogenesis. The Lepisosteidae offer a unique opportunity to study these cells in a living vertebrate.  相似文献

Experimental studies indicated that myomeres play several functional roles during swimming. Some of the functions in question are thought to change rostrocaudally, e.g., anterior myomeres are thought to generate forces, whereas posterior myomeres are thought to transmit forces. In order to determine whether these putative functions are reflected in myoseptal morphology we carried out an analysis of the myoseptal system that includes epaxial and hypaxial myosepta of all body regions for the first time. We combined clearing and staining, microdissections, polarized light microscopy, SEM technique, and length measurements of myoseptal parts to reveal the spatial arrangement, collagen fiber architecture, and rostrocaudal gradients of myosepta. We included representatives of the four basal actinopterygian clades to evaluate our findings in an evolutionary and in a functional context. Our comparison revealed a set of actinopterygian groundplan features. This includes a set of specifically arranged myoseptal tendons (epineural, epipleural, lateral, and myorhabdoid tendons) in all epaxial and postanal hypaxial myosepta. Only preanal hypaxial myosepta lack tendons and exclusively consist of mediolateral fibers. Laterally, myosepta generally align with the helically wound fibers of the dermis in order not to limit the body's maximum curvature. Medially, the relationship of myosepta to vertebrae clearly differs from a 1:1 relationship: a myoseptum attaches to the anterior margin of a vertebra, turns caudally, and traverses at least three vertebrae in an almost horizontal orientation in all body regions. By this arrangement, horizontal multiple layers of myosepta are formed along the trunk dorsal and ventral to the horizontal septum. Due to their reinforcement by epineural or epipleural tendons, these multiple layers are hypothesized to resist the radial expansion of underlying muscle fibers and thus contribute to modulation of body stiffness. Rostrocaudally, a dorsoventral symmetry of epaxial and hypaxial myosepta in terms of spatial arrangement and collagen fiber architecture is gradually developed towards the postanal region. Furthermore, the rostrocaudal extension of myosepta measured between anterior and posterior cones gradually increases. This myoseptal region is reinforced by longitudinal fibers of lateral tendons. Furthermore, the percentage of connective tissue in a cross section increases. These morphological data indicate that posterior myosepta are equipped for multisegmental force transmission towards the caudal fin. Anteriormost myosepta have reinforced and elongated dorsal posterior cones. They are adequately designed to transmit epaxial muscular forces to the neurocranium in order to cause its elevation during suction feeding.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to connect specific sutural morphologies with the specific types of deformation they experience. To meet this goal, we quantified the morphologies of the interfrontal (IF), interparietal (IP), and frontoparietal (FP) sutures in the extant fish Polypterus endlicherii, and used our published measurements of in vivo deformation of these sutures during feeding to infer how suture morphology and function are connected. Specifically, we found that three relatively simple measures of cross-sectional suture complexity (i.e., the ratio of total sutural length to its shortest end-to-end length; amount of sutural overlap; and size of the largest interdigitation) can be used to distinguish between the IF, FP, and IP sutures, which exhibit very different cross-sectional shapes and responses to loading. Interestingly, these differences in cross-sectional morphology are not reflected by the linear traces of these sutures on the surface of the skull, implying that cross-sectional shape of a suture must be known to infer the loading conditions it experiences. Plotting the three cross-sectional metrics against one another to yield a sutural morphospace shows that the IF, IP, and FP sutures define regions that are largely distinct from one another. Our previous measurements of strain across these sutures suggested that the FP region would lie between the IF and IP regions; instead, the FP region is largely set apart from the other two fields. Based on this discovery, and on the locations of cranial muscles, we propose a new model of deformation in the skull of P. endlicherii during feeding, in which rotation parallel to the skull roof is combined with bending, subjecting the FP suture to complex shearing. Finally, although the sutures of P. endlicherii appear to be significantly less complex than those of mammals, these fish sutures show a similar range of morphologies and perform similar functions as do mammalian sutures.  相似文献

Biosynthesis of ascorbic acid by extant actinopterygians   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Polypterus senegalus , the longnose gar Lepisosteus osseus and the bowfin Amia calva had gulonolactone oxidase activity in the kidney and thus can synthesize ascorbic acid de novo . The enzyme activity was associated with the microsomal fraction. The common carp Cyprinus carpio and the goldfish Carassius auratus had no gulonolactone oxidase activity. Antibodies directed against white sturgeon gulonolactone oxidase showed cross-reactivity with lake sturgeon, bowfin and longnose gar kidney enzymes, but not with enzymes from Polypterus , sea lamprey, and tadpole kidney or pig liver. Given cross-reactivity, gulonolactone oxidase relatedness matched actinopterygian phylogeny, and suggested homology of the character throughout fishes. Modern teleosts may have lost the ability to synthesize ascorbic acid since the late Triassic as a result of a single reversal in the founding population. Wild bowfin and longnose gar exhibited high ascorbate concentrations in liver and spleen when compared with the teleosts rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss and common carp fed vitamin C-supplemented diets.  相似文献

Polypteridae is a family of archaic freshwater African fish that constitute an interesting subject for the study of the karyological evolution in vertebrates, on account of their primitive morphological characters and peculiar relationships with lower Osteichthyans. In this paper, a cytogenetic analysis on twenty specimens of both sexes of Polypterus ornatipinnis the ornate "bichir", coming from the Congo River basin, was performed by using both classical and molecular techniques. The karyotypic formula (2n=36; FN=72) was composed of 26 M+10 SM. The Alu I banding, performed to characterize heterochromatin in this species, was mainly centromeric. Both the chromosome location of the ribosomal 5S and 18S rRNA genes were examined by using Ag-NOR, classical C-banding, CMA(3) staining and FISH. CMA(3) marked all centromerical regions and showed the presence of two GC rich regions on the p arm of the chromosome pair n°1 and on the q arm of the pair n°14. Staining with Ag-NOR marked the only telomeric region of the chromosome n°1 p arm. After PCR, the 5S rDNA in this species was cloned, sequenced and analyzed. In the 665bp 5S rDNA sequence of P.ornatipinnis, a conserved 120bp gene region for the 5S rDNA was identified, followed by a non-transcribed variable spacer (NTS) which included simple repeats, microsatellites and a fragment of a non-LTR retrotransposon R-TEX. FISH with 5S rDNA marked the subtelomeric region of the q arm of the chromosome pair n°14, previously marked by CMA(3). FISH with 18S rDNA marked the telomeric region of the p arm of the pair n°1, previously marked both by Ag-NOR and CMA(3). The (GATA)(7) repeats marked the telomeric regions of all chromosome pairs, with the exclusion of the n°1, n°3 and n°14; hybridization with telomeric probes (TTAGGG)(n) showed signals at the end of all chromosomes. Karyotype evolution in Polypterus genus was finally discussed, including the new data obtained.  相似文献

Regenerative ability varies tremendously across species. A common feature of regeneration of appendages such as limbs, fins, antlers, and tails is the formation of a blastema—a transient structure that houses a pool of progenitor cells that can regenerate the missing tissue. We have identified the expression of von Willebrand factor D and EGF domains (vwde) as a common feature of blastemas capable of regenerating limbs and fins in a variety of highly regenerative species, including axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum), lungfish (Lepidosiren paradoxa), and Polpyterus (Polypterus senegalus). Further, vwde expression is tightly linked to the ability to regenerate appendages in Xenopus laevis. Functional experiments demonstrate a requirement for vwde in regeneration and indicate that Vwde is a potent growth factor in the blastema. These data identify a key role for vwde in regenerating blastemas and underscore the power of an evolutionarily informed approach for identifying conserved genetic components of regeneration.  相似文献

Summary Central pathways of the nervus terminalis (n.t.) in the bichir, Polypterus palmas, were studied with the use of tracing techniques. After application of horseradish peroxidase to the unilateral olfactory mucosa labeled n.t. fibers were traced in seven distinct bundles through the subpallium. Projection areas are found in the precommissural ventral nucleus of the area ventralis telencephali ipsilaterally, the anterior commissure and commissural parts of the periventricular preoptic nucleus bilaterally; few n.t.-fibers cross via the anterior commissure to the contralateral side; no fibers were observed to turn rostrally to the contralateral olfactory bulb. Major targets of the n.t. include a restricted ventral part of the periventricular preoptic nucleus at the level of the optic chiasma bilaterally, and the periventricular nuclei located between the thalamic nuclei and the hypothalamus bilaterally. N.t. fibers continue their course through the ipsilateral hypothalamus and are traced as far as the mesencephalic tegmentum ipsilaterally. N.t. terminations are found consistently within the boundaries of periventricular cell nuclei, suggesting axosomatic synaptic contacts. We propose a differentiation of the n.t. ganglion cells into a distal (mucosal) and proximal (bulbar) type regarding the peripheral cell processes. Our findings are compared with those of other reports on the n.t. system.  相似文献

Summary Central connections of the olfactory bulb of Polypterus palmas were studied with the use of horseradish peroxidase and cobalt-tracing techniques. The olfactory bulb projects to subpallial and palliai areas in the ipsilateral telencephalon; a projection to the contralateral subpallium is noted via the habenular commissure. A further target of secondary olfactory fibers is a caudal olfactory projection area in the ipsilateral hypothalamus. No labeling was seen in the anterior commissure and in the contralateral olfactory bulb. The medial and the lateral pallium receive secondary olfactory fibers in distinct areas. Neurons projecting to the bulb are found in the ipsilateral subpallium, mainly in one dorsal longitudinal nucleus. The main connection with the tel- and diencephalon is mediated via the medial olfactory tract. This tract also contains fibers to the contralateral telencephalon, and to the hypothalamus. The smaller lateral olfactory tract mediates fibers to the lateral pallium. The organization of pathways of secondary olfactory fibers in the telencephalon is described. The present findings are compared to those obtained in species possessing an inverted forebrain. This investigation was supported by grants from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft to DLM  相似文献
