The pattern of prey utilization of the orb-weaving spider Araneus pinguis was studies by comparing between arthropods restrained in the empty webs (spiders were removed) and those unattacked in the intact webs (spiders were not removed). The number of arthropods was larger in the empty webs than in the intact webs. In the empty webs, web area, mesh width, number of radii, and signal thread length were presumed to affect the number of arthropods left in a single web. As for the intact webs, web area, mesh width, and web-exposure time were important factors. In the empty webs, the density of arthropods decreased away from the hub. On the other hand, the density of unattacked arthropods in the intact webs was the same throughout the web. Arthropods in the empty webs were larger than those in the intact webs. The upper limit in size of unattacked arthropods increased along with the distance from the hub in the intact webs, but not in the empty webs. These results indicate increase in the minimum size of eaten arthropods increased in the former. This positive sizedistance relation may have resulted from the adaptive switching of spiders’ alternative foraging methods (i.e., the rapid attack at encounter and the later eating during web deconstruction) on the basis of the prey profitability. 相似文献

Glucose metabolism and insulin secretion were studied in isolated rat pancreatic islets of different sizes and the amount of tissue was quantitated by the measurement of DNA. It was found that larger islets (140-210 ng DNA/islet) utilized more glucose (based on the conversion of 3H-5-glucose to [3H]20) per ng of DNA than islets containing less DNA (60-120 ng/islet). However, the insulin secreted per ng of DNA in response to a given glucose concentration was the same in islets of all sizes. Also, the islet insulin and glucagon content when expressed in terms of DNA did not depend upon islet size. Thus, although glucose utilization rates expressed as a function of islet DNA content were greater in larger islets, no such relationship was found for glucose-induced insulin release or insulin and glucagon content. 相似文献

Dispersion capabilities of new queens were studied in the two haplometrotic paper wasps Polistes riparius and P. snelleni. New queens were marked on the nests in the late summer and located in the next spring. Dispersion distances greatly varied among queens: although a large part of recovered queens nested in close proximity to their natal sites, some did disperse over 100–300 m. This suggests that queens' emigration from and immigration into the censused areas occurred to a substantial extent. On the whole, these species exhibited a weaker “philopatric” tendency than those so far studied for dispersion distance, and seem to have the potential for a long-distance dispersion. 相似文献

The nucleotide sequence from the 5′ terminus inward of one third of mouse α- and βmaj-globin messenger RNAs has been established. In addition, using 5′ 32P end-labeled mRNAs as substrates and S1 and T1 nucleases as probes for single-stranded regions, the secondary structures of mouse and rabbit α- and β-globin mRNAs have been analyzed. Our results indicate that the AUG initiator codon in both mouse and rabbit β-globin mRNA is quite susceptible to cleavage with S1 and T1 nucleases, suggesting that it resides in a single-stranded exposed region. In contrast, the initiator AUG in the α-globin mRNA of both species is inaccessible to cleavage, indicating that it is either buried by tertiary structure or is base-paired. Since the rate of initiation of protein synthesis with β-globin mRNA in rabbit reticulocyte is 30–40% faster than for α-globin mRNA, these results imply a possible correlation between the differential rates of initiation with these two mRNAs and the accessibility of the respective AUG initiator codons. 相似文献

The release of iron from horse spleen ferritin by the chelating agents desferrioxamine B, rhodotorulic acid, 2,3-dihydroxybenzoate, 2,2′-bipyridyl and pyridine-2-aldehyde-2-pyridyl hydrazone (Paphy) has been studied in vitro. Ferritin prepared by classical procedures involving thermal denaturation releases its iron less effectively than ferritin isolated by a modified procedure that avoids this step. Desferrioxamine B and rhodotorulic acid are the most effective in releasing iron from both preparations of ferritin. When FMN is added, iron release by desferrioxamine B, rhodotorulic acid, and 2,3-dihydroxybenzoate was effectively blocked, whereas both bipyridyl and Paphy showed a marked simulation. A substantial increase in iron release was also observed for bipyridyl and Paphy with ascorbate; a less important increase was noted for rhodotorulic acid. EDTA exerted a marked inhibition of iron release from ferritin with rhodotorulic acid, 2,3-dihydroxybenzoate, bipyridyl, and Paphy. The effects of citrate and oxalate on iron release by the chelators was small. The effect of the concentration of flavin on iron release from ferritin by bipyridyl and desferrioxamine B have been studied. Desferrioxamine is unable to mobilize FeII from ferritin following reduction by reduced FMN, whereas bipyridyl can rapidly complex the ferrous iron. The results are discussed in the context of our current concepts of storage iron mobilization in the treatment of iron overload. 相似文献

Only clear cloacal fluid was eliminated during the first 30–60 min after emergence of feeding on human blood. Neither meconium nor blood was voided. More liquid was excreted after withdrawing blood than after ecdysis, but the pattern of emission was the same, in that fluid was ejected rapidly only or mostly over the first 10–15 min after these events. Adult female rats with high levels of circulating estradiol are biased to use a place strategy to solve an ambiguous spatial navigation task and those with low levels are biased to use a response strategy. We examined the development of this hormonal modulation of strategy use by training juvenile female rats on an ambiguous navigation task and probing them for strategy use at postnatal day (PD) 16, 21, or 26, after administration of 17 β-estradiol or oil 48 and 24 h prior to testing. We found that rats could use either strategy successfully by PD21 but that estradiol did not bias rats to use a place strategy until PD26. In order to evaluate the stability of this effect over multiple navigation experiences, we retested oil-treated juveniles three times during adulthood. On the first adult navigation experience, rats were significantly more likely to use the same navigation strategy they used as juveniles, regardless of current estrous cycle phase. On the second and third adult tests, after rats had more experience with the task, previous navigation experience did not predict strategy use. Rats in proestrus were significantly more likely to use a place strategy while rats in estrus and diestrus did not appear to have a group bias to use either strategy. These results suggest that estradiol can modulate spatial navigation strategy use before puberty but that this effect interacts with previous navigation experience. This study sheds light on when and under what circumstances estradiol gains control over spatial navigation behavior in the female rat. 相似文献

To examine the effect of age on the glomerular basement membrane, compositional analyses were performed on membranes isolated in highly purified form from rats at different stages of their growth (35 to 200 days old). Substantial age-related changes were observed in the amino acid composition of the basement membranes. A significant correlation with age (P < 0.01) was evident in the contents of 3- and 4-hydroxyproline, threonine, serine, alanine, valine, half-cystine, hydroxylysine, and lysine. Of these amino acids, hydroxylysine and both isomers of hydroxyproline demonstrated a progressive increase with age, while the others were found to decline. The direct relationship of hydroxylysine content with age (P < 0.001) was associated with an inverse correlation of lysine with age (P < 0.001) so that the ratio of hydroxylysine to lysine increased in a highly significant manner from 0.92 at 35 days to 1.33 at 200 days. This elevation in the hydroxylysine content was accompanied by an augmentation in the number of saccharide units linked to it so that the percentage glycosylation of this amino acid was not significantly affected by age. The relative differences in the hydroxylysine and lysine levels between young and older rats were maintained in sodium dodecyl sulfateextracted membranes. These results suggest that the compositional changes observed during the aging process reflect an alteration in the subunit makeup of the basement membrane, possibly due to an increased synthesis or decreased degradation of the more collagen-like polypeptide components. 相似文献
