We used molecular characters to infer the phylogenetic position of the Western Mediterranean bushcricket genus Odontura and to trace its high karyotype diversity. Analysis of 1391 base pairs of two mitochondrial genes (COI and ND1) and one nuclear sequence (ITS2) was conducted. Phylogenetic topologies were estimated using maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood and likelihood‐based Bayesian inference. The genus Odontura is a phylogenetic outlier in respect of all other European Phaneropterinae genera and has been proposed to have originated from a hitherto unknown ancestor. Our results support the monophyly of the genus Odontura and the recognition of two subgenera: Odontura and Odonturella. We found that both Sicilian taxa of the subgenus Odontura have a completely identical morphology and song patterns. Combining these results, we proposed that both should be treated as subspecies: O. (Odontura) stenoxypha stenoxypha and O. (O.) st. arcuata. Bioacoustic data also proved to support independent markers, with song characteristics reflecting the molecular topology. Mapping the karyotypic characters onto the phylogenetic tree allows a reconstruction of the directions and transitional stages of chromosome differentiation. The number of autosomes within the genus Odontura ranges from 26 to 30. In addition to the ancestral X0 sex determination mechanism, neo‐XY and neo‐X1X2Y sex chromosomes have evolved independently.  相似文献

1. Florivory, which is less studied but as equally widespread as herbivory, can have effects on plant and floral trait adaptations, individual fitness, and community interactions. However, there are still knowledge gaps in our understanding of florivory, including the role of neural constraints and diet specialisation of florivores in floral resource utilisation. 2. According to the neural constraint hypothesis, a generalist flower‐visiting katydid is expected to have lower decision‐making efficacy in feeding when subjected to the presence of both capitula and leaves, compared to the presence of either one of the two resources. 3. In the present study, experiments using the katydid, Phaneroptera brevis, and the plant, whiteweed, Ageratum conyzoides, were carried out to examine the foraging behaviour of the katydid to test our hypothesis. The results confirmed the prediction of the neural constraint hypothesis. 4. The decision‐making efficacy was generally lowered when the katydid was presented with the choice for both the resource that is preferred (capitula) and less preferred (leaves). It was also shown that Phaneroptera brevis is floriphilic, as it prefers capitula to leaves. 5. In conclusion, the first evidence of neural constraint in florivory is provided and suggests that more can be explored into the effects of neural constraints and diet specialisation in floral resource utilisation.  相似文献

Spermatozoa of Tettigoniidae are usually transferred to the female by means of a spermatophore which is also the site of feather-shaped spermatodesm formation. These spermatodesms are then transferred to a spermatheca, composed of a spermathecal duct and of a seminal receptacle, involved in storing spermatozoa. In order to extend the knowledge about sperm transfer and spermatodesms reorganization in the Tettigoniidae, a morpho-structural investigation was carried out on spermatophore and spermatheca of Tylopsis liliifolia and on the reorganization of the gametes from the spermatophore. Our results show that the spermatodesms undergo disorganization in the spermatophore; unlike other Tettigoniidae, however, feather-shaped spermatodesms are never found. The epithelium of the spermatheca consists of two cell types, the cuticle-forming and the gland cells, with secretory features. The gland cells, absent in the distal tract of the seminal receptacle, release their secretion in a “reservoir” where an efferent duct opens. In the distal tract of the spermathecal duct, adjacent epithelial cells show diversified ultrastructural characteristics whose probable role is discussed. A particular feature of T. liliifolia is the genesis of the feather-shaped spermatodesms in the seminal receptacle. This feature and the peculiar organization of the feather-shaped spermatodesm are a possible autapomorphy of T. liliifolia.  相似文献

We studied the song and morphology of Isophya stysi ?ejchan, 1958, and Isophya modestior Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1882, two closely related bush-cricket species, treated as endangered in Hungary. Our main goals were to find song and morphometric characters that can be used reliably for the identification of specimens and to present comparative results that help us to see the relationship of the two taxa more clearly. We have found that the syllables of Isophya stysi always begin with 1-5 slowly repeated, distinct pulses, while in I. modestior, pulse-repetition rate was evenly high throughout the whole main pulse series of the syllable. Discriminant analysis showed that on the basis of their morphology, all the examined male specimens can be classified correctly to their song-based identification; furthermore, the arrangement pattern of stridulatory pegs also differed for the two species. Our results confirm that the two taxa are best treated as specifically distinct as they are distinguishable and the observed song differences may well be able to maintain reproductive isolation between them. We provide classification functions (based on four morphometric characters) that can be used confidently for the identification of males; however, we could not find any reliable method for identifying females from their morphology. Our results suggest that within I. stysi the population of the central-Transylvanian mountain range differs from the others by producing a higher number of pulses per syllable and having more stridulatory pegs and less elongated left elytron.  相似文献
