The Devonian fossil Palaeoisopus appears, in the light of recent evidence from newly found specimens, to be much nearer extant pycnogonids than previously surmised. The fossil record of the Pycnogonida is extended to the Jurassic on the basis of a long overlooked Solenhofen example. Most of the specimens ascribed to the common Solenhofen Phalangites cannot be pycnogonids, but it is possible that we are dealing with a complex of superficially similar fossils. A revision of the classification of the fossil pycnogonids (Order Palaeopantopoda) is suggested in the light of this new material.  相似文献

Earliest cetaceans (whales) originated from the early Eocene of Indo-Pakistan, but the group dispersed through most of the oceans of the planet by the late middle to late Eocene. This late Eocene global distribution indicates that important dispersal events took place during the middle Eocene (Lutetian), a globally undersampled time interval that is well documented in the Togolese phosphate series. We report here the first discovery of a partial cetacean cranium from middle Eocene deposits of Togo (West Africa). A 3D model of the cranium and teeth was reconstructed in order to reveal hidden anatomical features. The dental and cranial characteristics of the Togolese specimen recall those of protocetid taxa described in Africa, Asia, and North America, but also display significant differences. In particular, we show that the new specimen shares a number of morphological features with the Togolese taxon Togocetus. Such a hypothesis is further supported by a cladistic analysis including 45 taxa and 167 morphological characters, which recovers the new specimen close to Togocetus as the first offshoot of protocetids. Phylogenetic analysis including all the protocetids remains of Kpogamé confirms the singular diversity of the Togolese phosphate basin, and enables to examine potential connections with faunas from contemporaneous localities in Africa.  相似文献

The constraints on paleoecological analyses of fossil vertebrates are discussed using the example of Permo-Carboniferous amphibians. Paleoecological interpretations based on the study of the vertebrates as well as the fossil-bearing de-posit are generally inexact and possibly even inaccurate. Thus as many aspects as possible must be examined — the animal with all of its anatomical components and the fossil-bearing deposit with all available Information concerning sedimentology and taphonomy. Comparisons based on constructional morphology permit ecomorphological characterization of a fossil organism, with an optional band width for different ecological parameters. Individual parameters can be further re-fined through a search for evidence regarding the actual ecological band width, specifically in terms of diet and habitat. Reliable, broadly based paleoecological analyses can only be done for fossil occurrences that preserve many, more or less articulated specimens of vertebrates, and, even in those in-stances, only for more or less aquatic forms. This is particularly applicable for higher-level studies at the level of “population” or ecosystem. The study of temporally much averaged “populations” can provide data concerning age distribution for and growth-related ecological changes in a particular species. Studies of an ecosystem aim to reconstruct the structure and functions of that System through a reconstruction of the food web. On this basis, evaluation of the ecological role of the species in the context of paleocommunities is possible.  相似文献

An ATP-binding cassette transporter LolCDE complex of Escherichia coli releases lipoproteins destined to the outer membrane from the inner membrane as a complex with a periplasmic chaperone, LolA. Interaction of the LolA-lipoprotein complex with an outer membrane receptor, LolB, then causes localization of lipoproteins to the outer membrane. As far as examined, formation of the LolA-lipoprotein complex strictly depends on ATP hydrolysis by the LolCDE complex in the presence of LolA. It has been speculated, based on crystallographic and biochemical observations, that LolA undergoes an ATP-dependent conformational change upon lipoprotein binding. Thus, preparation of a large amount of the LolA-lipoprotein complex is difficult. Moreover, lipoproteins bound to LolA are heterogeneous. We report here that the coexpression of LolA and outer membrane-specific lipoprotein Pal from a very efficient plasmid causes the unusual accumulation of the LolA-Pal complex in the periplasm. The complex was purified to homogeneity and shown to be a functional intermediate of the lipoprotein localization pathway. In vitro incorporation of Pal into outer membranes revealed that a single molecule of LolB catalyzes the incorporation of more than 100 molecules of Pal into outer membranes. Moreover, the LolB-dependent incorporation of Pal was not affected by excess-free LolA, indicating that LolB specifically interacts with liganded LolA. Finally, the LolB depletion caused the accumulation of a significant amount of Pal in the periplasm, thereby establishing the conditions for preparation of the homogeneous LolA-lipoprotein complex.  相似文献

The taphonomy is a powerful and requisite tool for environmental reconstructions of ancient plant communities. Necrobiotic processes, which lead to the production of plant fragments, inform us on fossil plant physiology. Among the processes that can be drawn from necrobiotic studies is the retention of leaf organs on plants, the relative quantity of pollen grains produced by different fossil species or the significance of wildfire dynamics in ancient plant communities. Biostratinomy examination is a fundamental tool for elucidating fossil plant habitats. Numerous experimental data allow paleobotanists for evaluating the role of transport in the origin of fossil assemblages. Autochthonous plant assemblages, which are characterised by the preservation of fossil rooting structures, are relatively rare in the nature. In consequence, the search for palaeoecological information from parautochthonous to allochthonous assemblages has been a priority in taphonomy. As a result, taphonomic models have been elaborated in well-known sedimentological contexts, such as small lacustrine deltas, which allow for the distinction between riparian or perideltaic plant remains. Lithospheric processes modify plant debris after burial. The differences in the degrees of transformations (or alterations) during the diagenesis provide for information about the original morphology and biochemical composition of the plant tissues, which are also paleoecologically useful. Thus, amber diagenesis modifies resin biochemistry into new molecules that are still informative from the chemotaxonomical point of view.  相似文献

Remarkable Invertebrates from the Lower Callovian of la Voulte-sur-Rhône (Ardèche, France). The four-excavating field expeditions from 1983 to 1986 led to collect a considerable amount of new data from this exceptional paleontological site, which was neglected, and unexplored for the essential, until now. This paper presents a synthesis of the main available results. For the first time, the succession of the lithofacies is precised from all preserved deposits thick about 12 m. These observations reveal, on the whole, a great homogeneity of lithologic, paleobiologic or taphonomic characteristics, which denote a rather great constancy of the global environmental conditions. The lithofacies are schistous marls revealing former uncemented paleosubstrates, with clay very dominating (montmorillonite for 60–70%, calcium carbonate, siderite and limonite for less than 30% or 40%). The faunas are nearly exclusively composed of pelagic, nectopelagic or mesopelagic organisms (swimming in full water or dependent on free algal environments); they include very few benthic organisms. The marine water depth in this area would be estimated to have reached roughly 200 m. The surface and middle water strata, where lived the major part of organisms, must have been usually agitated, well oxygenated and illuminated. At the opposite side, the bottom water must have been very quiet and anoxic, in aphotic zona, which is responsible for the soft tissue mineralisation.  相似文献

The Zabuk Formation of the Derik Group exposed over much of south-eastern Turkey presents a succession composed of shallow marine and fluvial siliciclastic sedimentary rocks. The Lower Cambrian assemblages containing abundant anemone-style trace fossils are known from most major palaeocontinents such as Laurentia, Baltica, and Gondwana. These have possible affinities with semi-infaunal dwelling anemones on siliciclastic mid-latitude shelves of West Gondwana in early Fortunian deposits. Among them is Bergaueria, characterized by plug-shaped burrows as exemplified by Bergaueria perata, that is, a characteristic trace fossil of the Cambrian globally.  相似文献

Long-chain nonesterified (“free”) fatty acids (FFA) can affect the mitochondrial generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in two ways: (i) by depolarisation of the inner membrane due to the uncoupling effect and (ii) by partly blocking the respiratory chain. In the present work this dual effect was investigated in rat heart and liver mitochondria under conditions of forward and reverse electron transport. Under conditions of the forward electron transport, i.e. with pyruvate plus malate and with succinate (plus rotenone) as respiratory substrates, polyunsaturated fatty acid, arachidonic, and branched-chain saturated fatty acid, phytanic, increased ROS production in parallel with a partial inhibition of the electron transport in the respiratory chain, most likely at the level of complexes I and III. A linear correlation between stimulation of ROS production and inhibition of complex III was found for rat heart mitochondria. This effect on ROS production was further increased in glutathione-depleted mitochondria. Under conditions of the reverse electron transport, i.e. with succinate (without rotenone), unsaturated fatty acids, arachidonic and oleic, straight-chain saturated palmitic acid and branched-chain saturated phytanic acid strongly inhibited ROS production. This inhibition was partly abolished by the blocker of ATP/ADP transfer, carboxyatractyloside, thus indicating that this effect was related to uncoupling (protonophoric) action of fatty acids. It is concluded that in isolated rat heart and liver mitochondria functioning in the forward electron transport mode, unsaturated fatty acids and phytanic acid increase ROS generation by partly inhibiting the electron transport and, most likely, by changing membrane fluidity. Only under conditions of reverse electron transport, fatty acids decrease ROS generation due to their uncoupling action.  相似文献
