Summary Two multivariate statistical procedures were used to determine the basic trends of morphologic and geographic variations between males of a common stored-grain mite,Glycyphagus destructor (Schrank) collected from Canada and Japan. All analyses were carried out on physical measurements of 25 morphological features. Three principal component analyses bases on the Canadian (50 specimens), Japanese (50 specimens) and the combined populations from the 2 countries (100 specimens) revealed that the first component, accounting for 40% of the variability in all 3 solutions represented a measure of the morphologic dimension of the body. The second component, which explained over 18% of the variability, is a measure of the leg dimension. Smaller clusters of variates characteristic of the population from each county were also evident. Discriminant analysis, performed with the Canadian and Japanese populations, identified the variates that differed between the 2 populations and provided an approximate appraisal of interrelations. The general conclusion based on these analyses is that the Canadian and the Japanese populations are morphologically distinct. The difference is most evident in the diameters of genu 2, lengths of the sensory seta WI, lengths of the body, and the distances between the vertical external setae. Four different architectural acrylic paint formulations were tested by exposure to weathering for 7 years in the urban site of São Paulo and the coastal site of Ubatuba, South-East Brazil. Surface discolorations and detachment of coatings were assessed and the components of the biofilms were identified by standard microbiological methods. The painted surfaces of the mortar panels were much more discolored in Ubatuba, where major components of the biofilms were the cyanobacteria Gloeocapsa and Scytonema. In two of the four paint films, a pink coloration on the surface at this coastal site, caused mainly by red-pigmented Gloeocapsa, produced high discoloration ratings, but low degradation (as measured by detachment). Biofilms in São Paulo contained the same range of phototrophs, but in lesser quantity. However, fungal numbers, as determined by plating, were higher. Detachment ratings in this urban site were only slightly lower than in Ubatuba. The matt paint performed worst of the four, with silk and semi-gloss finishes giving lowest biodeterioration ratings. The matt elastomeric paint performed well at both sites, apart from becoming almost 100% covered by the pink biofilm in Ubatuba. Unpainted mortar panels became intensely discolored with a black biofilm, showing that all the paints had achieved one of their objectives, that of surface protection of the substrate. The value of PVC (pigment volume content) as an indicator of coatings biosusceptibility, is questioned.  相似文献

Experiments dealing with the role of juvenile hormone, adipokinetic hormone and diuretic hormone in the Painted Lady butterfly Vanessa cardui are reported. The results demonstrate an important role of JH in the regulation of ovarian and colleterial gland development in females, and in the regulation of accessory gland, tubular gland and ejaculatory duct development in males. In addition, the presence of an adult reproductive diapause, characterized by decreased effective juvenile hormone haemolymph titres, is suggested. Evidence for the existence of both adipokinetic and diuretic hormones in the Painted Lady is also presented, as is data indicating that both hormones may be similar or identical to those previously described in Monarch butterflies. Owing to the above results, and the existence of an artificial diet suitable for mass rearing in the laboratory, the Painted Lady appears to be an excellent species for studies on adult lepidopteran neuroendocrinology.  相似文献

16 triterpenoid saponins including two new compounds were isolated from the seeds of A esculus sylvatica W. Bartram. The two new saponins were assigned as 3-O-[β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1  2)]-α-L-arabinofuranosyl-(1  3)-β-D-glucuronopyranosyl-21,22-O-ditigloyl-3β,16α,21β,22α,24,28 hexahydroxyolean-12-ene (aesculioside S1, 1) and 3-O-[β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1  2)]-α-L-arabinofuranosyl-(1  3)-β-D-glucuronopyranosyl-21-O-tigloyl-22-O-angeloyl 3β,16α,21β,22α,24,28-hexahydroxyolean-12-ene (aesculioside S2, 2). Aesculioside S1 and S2 displayed moderate cytotoxicity against human non-small cell lung cancer cells (A549) and prostate cancer cells (PC3) (GI50 ranged from 8.7 to 18.2 μM). The structural analysis of the saponins isolated from Aesculus supports the taxonomic placement of A. sylvatica under the section Pavia of Aesculus genus.  相似文献

Lycaon pictus has been named by a variety of common names, such as “African Wild Dog”, “African Hunting Dog” and their adequates in other languages. The article summarizes the history of naming in that species concluding with a new recommendation by the SSP as well as the EEP for that species to rename it as Painted Dog. As the translation of that name into German is an unhandy term it is suggested to name it “Picasso-Hund” in that language.  相似文献

Shifts in resource use may be an important mechanism by which organisms can adjust to novel environmental conditions, such as those imposed by climate change. However, for such shifts to be possible, environmental space must exist into which organisms can move. Habitat that ensures successful survival and reproduction is one such critical resource. We studied resource selection of shade cover over nest sites by painted turtles in populations in Illinois (center of range) and New Mexico (southern edge of range). We targeted this habitat feature because shade can influence hatching success and offspring phenotype (including sex in the study species) by affecting nest microenvironments. We found that while turtles in both populations selected nest sites that were shadier than average available sites, overall resource selection differed between the populations. This disparity may have been due to differences in structure of vegetation that provides shade at each site, because areas with high shade cover in New Mexico (low dense thickets) were much more difficult for turtles to access than those in Illinois (dense tree canopy cover). Further, shade cover predicted different parameters of incubation regime at each site, suggesting that turtles must assess dissimilar components of shade cover in order to choose nest sites and predict their future incubation regimes. Our results suggest that shade cover within nesting areas is a key component of painted turtle habitat, and that accessible, highly-shaded nest sites may be limited at the New Mexico site. Maintaining a range of shade cover from which turtles can select nest sites would permit plasticity in nest-site choice to be expressed, which may be important in preventing sex ratio skews due to climate change.  相似文献

The distal region of the Drosophila leg, the tarsus, is divided into five segments (ta I-V) and terminates in the pretarsus, which is characterized by a pair of claws. Several homeobox genes are expressed in distinct regions of the tarsus, including aristaless (al) and lim1 in the pretarsus, Bar (B) in ta IV and V, and apterous (ap) in ta IV. This pattern is governed by regulatory interactions between these genes; for example, Al and B are mutually antagonistic resulting in exclusion of B expression from the pretarsus. Although Al is necessary, it is not sufficient to repress B, indicating another factor is required. Here, this factor is identified as the product of the C15 gene, which is another homeodomain protein, a homolog of the human Hox11 oncogene. C15 is expressed in the same cells as al and, together, C15 and Al appear to directly repress B. C15/Al also act indirectly to repress ap in ta V, i.e., in surrounding cells. To do this, C15/Al autonomously repress expression of the gene encoding the Notch ligand Delta (Dl) in the pretarsus, restricting Dl to ta V and creating a Dl+/Dl- border at the interface between ta V and the pretarsus. This results in upregulation of Notch signaling, which induces expression of the bowl gene, the product of which represses ap.  相似文献

A literature review of 34 families of flowering plants containing at least one species pollinated primarily by beetles is presented. While the majority of species are represented by magnoliids and basal monocotyledons specialized, beetle-pollinated systems have evolved independently in 14 families of eudicotyldons and six families of petaloid monocots. Four, overlapping modes of floral presentation in plants pollinated exclusively by beetles (Bilabiate, Brush, Chamber Blossom and Painted Bowl) are described. Chamber Blossoms and Painted Bowls are the two most common modes. Chamber Blossoms, found in magnoliids, primitive monocotyledons and in some families of woody eudicots, exploit the greatest diversity of beetle pollinators. Painted Bowls are restricted to petaloid monocots and a few families of eudicots dependent primarily on hairy species of Scarabaeidae as pollen vectors. In contrast, generalist flowers pollinated by a combination of beetles and other animals are recorded in 22 families. Generalist systems are more likely to secrete nectar and exploit four beetle families absent in specialist flowers. Centers of diversity for species with specialized, beetle-pollinated systems are distributed through the wet tropics (centers for Brush and Chamber Blossoms) to warm temperate-Mediterranean zones (centers for Painted Bowls and a few Bilabiate flowers). It is unlikely that beetles were the first pollinators of angiosperms but specialized, beetlepollinated flowers must have evolved by the midlate Cretaceous to join pre-existing guilds of beetlepollinated gymnosperms. The floras of Australia and western North America suggest that mutualistic interactions between beetles and flowers has been a continuous and labile trend in angiosperms with novel interactions evolving through the Tertiary.  相似文献

Recent studies demonstrated that the Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui), a cosmopolitan diurnal butterfly performs long-range migration between subtropical Africa and north-western Europe, covered by individuals belonging to up to six generations. Here we analyze temporal patterns of complete annual migratory activity of the Painted Lady in Hungary, located in its Central European migratory route, almost completely unstudied before. To do so, we used field occurrence data collected between 2000 and 2019 and estimated temporal patterns in migratory activity by fitting kernel density functions on the daily mean number of individuals and observation frequency. The temporal distributions of kernel density estimates were analyzed as a function of time and key climatic predictors of the study area. We found that (i) the timing of spring arrivals has been advancing; (ii) the relative intensity of the first and last migratory peaks of the Painted Lady significantly increased during the past decades; and (iii) intensity of the last migratory peak is related to the mean temperature of the previous month, inferring that the migration is shifting to earlier dates and their volume of the migration has substantially intensified, evoking mutually nonexclusive, competing hypotheses. Our study indicates the strengthening migration activities of a southerly distributed, long-distance migrant diurnal butterfly, most probably linked to the northward shift of wintering areas induced by warming trends of the southern parts of Europe. However, the complexity of the likely processes leading to changing migratory strategies calls up for further research in both breeding and wintering areas.  相似文献
