Salmon have provided key insights into the relative influence of natural and sexual selection on major histocompatibility complex (MHC) variation. Natural selection on salmon MHC genes has been demonstrated in pathogen studies, and there is evidence of MHC-based mate choice (sexual selection). We tested whether parental MHC genes affect survivorship of juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) by quantifying the influence of parental genome-wide relatedness and MHC genotype on survivorship to the swim-up stage. Thirteen microsatellite loci were used to estimate the influence of genome-wide relatedness between parents on offspring survivorship and MHC genotypes were determined by sequencing part of the class IIβ gene. Our results revealed no significant relationship between early offspring survivorship and genome-wide relatedness, predicted MHC heterozygosity, or MHC allelic similarity. Overall, our data are consistent with the contention that excess MHC heterozygosity in Atlantic salmon juveniles is due to sexual selection as well as differential survival of offspring due to MHC genotype.  相似文献

Despite recent advances in conservation genetics and related disciplines and the growing impact that conservation genetics is having in conservation biology, our knowledge on several key issues in the field is still insufficient. Here we identify some of these issues together with addressing several paradoxes which have to be solved before conservation genetics can face new challenges that are appearing in the transitory phase from the population genetics into the population genomics era. Most of these issues, paradoxes and challenges, like the central dogma of conservation genetics, the computational, theoretical and laboratory experiment achievements and limitations in the conservation genetics field have been discussed. Further knowledge on the consequences of inbreeding and outbreeding depression in wild populations as well as the capacity of small populations to adapt to local environmental conditions is also urgently needed. The integration of experimental, theoretical and applied conservation genetics will contribute to improve our understanding of methodological and applied aspects of conservation genetics.  相似文献

Habitat degradation and loss can reduce size and genetic variability of natural populations, increasing individual homozygosity and average relatedness between individuals. While the resulting inbreeding depression may be reduced by natural selection under prevailing environmental conditions, it may increase again under environmental stress. To investigate the effect of environmental stress on offspring performance and the expression of inbreeding depression, we hand-pollinated maternal plants in small (< 100, n=5) and large populations (> 400 flowering plants, n=5) of the rare plant Cochlearia bavarica (Brassicaceae) and raised the offspring under experimentally manipulated water and light regimes (normal or reduced supply). In addition to considering natural variation in inbreeding levels due to population size, we manipulated pollen donor provenance and diversity. Maternal plants were pollinated with nine donors from a different population or with one or nine donors from the same population. One further inflorescence of each maternal plant was exposed to free pollination. Offspring growth and survival were monitored over 300 days. Offspring performance varied significantly among populations and maternal plants. Environmental stress interacted significantly with these factors. However, there was no general indication that offspring from small populations were more negatively affected. In seven out of 10 populations, offspring derived from between-population pollination performed better than offspring derived from within-population pollination. Also, in five out of 10 populations, average offspring size was higher after within-population pollination with nine than after pollination with one pollen donor. These results suggest low genetic diversity within C. bavarica populations, both smaller and larger ones. Interactions between environmental stress and pollination treatment indicated that using pollen donors from outside a population or increasing the number of pollen donors can reduce inbreeding depression, but that this beneficial effect is impaired under stressful conditions.  相似文献

Egg-to-adult viability of sexual offspring in Daphnia magna is lower for selfed (average: 43.0%) than for outcrossed families (average: 74.7%). This suggests that intraclonal mating is not the rule in Daphnia populations. For a given family, hatching rate of eggs resulting from interpopulation crosses is lower than for intrapopulation crosses. This breakdown in hatching responses may result in the effective gene flow between Daphnia populations being severely reduced, offering an explanation for the apparent paradox of genetic differentiation of Daphnia populations in spite of efficient dispersal.  相似文献

Plant hybridization can lead to the evolution of invasiveness. We wished to determine whether hybrids between the largely self-sterile Atlantic Spartina alterniflora and California native S. foliosa had evolved self-fertility during their ca 30 year existence in San Francisco Bay, CA. In pollination experiments we found that neither of the parental species was self-fertile, nor were early generation hybrids. A large fraction of later generation hybrids were profusely self-fertile. Inbreeding depression was high in the parental species and early generation hybrids, but was much reduced in later generation hybrids—some even showed outbreeding depression. We found that populations of later generation hybrids and their seedling progeny were almost two-fold more homozygous than early generation hybrids, consistent with the evidence of increased selfing shown by our parentage analyses based upon 17 microsatellite markers. We posit that evolved self-fertility has contributed substantially to the rapid spread of hybrid Spartina in San Francisco Bay.  相似文献

Summary Three measures of potential outbreeding efficiency were quantified throughout two flowering seasons in a population of the mass-flowering Polemonium foliosissimum: 1) the distances flown between plants by bumblebee pollinators; 2) the proximity of visited plants; and 3) the diversity of individuals visited. Results were consistent between years. Individual plants did not function differentially with respect to female (i.e., pollen receipt) and male (i.e., pollen donation) function. Both female and male components of outbreeding, as estimated by all three measures, were positively correlated with the number of flowers per plant. Significantly more outbreeding could occur during the final phase of flowering when most individuals had relatively few blossoms. Although the potential for outbreeding was the same at any time through an individual's blooming regime, individuals for which the peak of blooming occurred after the peak for the population as a whole have significantly more outbreeding potential via both female and male function. These factors may combine such that any pressure to increase outbreeding in this self-incompatible species manifests itself in directional selection for delayed flowering time.  相似文献

The tertiary relict plant Sinocalycanthus chinensis, endemic to Zhejiang province with small populations and fragmented distribution, is an endangered plant in China. A relatively high species-level genetic diversity and low population-level genetic diversity exist in this species, and large genetic differentiation exists between two main populations with significant geographical isolation. Based on a previous artificial simulation mating test, amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) marker was used in the present study to assess genetic diversity of filial generation colonies generated by different mating modes and to clarify genetic effects of various mating modes. The filial generation colonies generated by natural pollination and by geitonogamy were found to be similar to each other in terms of their relatively low genetic parameters and minimum genetic differentiation. This indicated that under natural conditions, selfing might occur at a higher proportion leading to the low genetic diversity within the population. The degree of genetic diversity of the filial generation colonies generated by outbreeding was highest, followed by inbreeding (xenogamy) and selfing (geitonogamy). Moreover, genetic differentiation between filial generation colonies generated by selfing (geitonogamy) and inbreeding (i.e., xenogamy) was much smaller than that between filial generation colonies generated by selfing and outbreeding. The results indicated that the genetic effect of outbreeding was much more dominant than other mating modes. Therefore, artificially promoting outbreeding between the two isolated geographically populations contributed to the enhancement of genetic diversity in populations in S. chinensis.  相似文献

Intraspecific variation in plumage may have a functional significance in mate choice. As a result, breeding birds are often paired assortatively with respect to colour. However, whether this within-pair correlation is a result of homotypic preference whereby individuals pick a mate that looks like themselves, or directional preference whereby all individuals have the same phenotypic preference, is often unknown. Using data collected between 1989 and 2006, we describe intraspecific variation in the striking white feathers on the leading edge of the wing, lesser coverts and mantle of 144 Spanish imperial eagles (Aquila adalberti), one of the most endangered birds of prey in the world. Females had, on average, more white than males, and pairs mated in a positive assortative fashion. Coloration was not related to age of the bird, food supply (i.e., territory quality) or breeding productivity. Our results are most consistent with the process of homotypic-preference assortative mating, and this may be a result of sexual imprinting, and function as a mechanism to optimize the degree of outbreeding. This pattern of mate selection may explain the rapid evolutionary divergence of A. adalberti from the continental population of imperial eagle A. heliaca.  相似文献

Outbreeding has been shown to decrease fitness in a variety of species, including several species of fish. An understanding of the general outcomes following outbreeding is required in order to understand the consequences of conservation-related actions and hybridization in aquaculture. A meta-analysis was conducted on outbreeding studies in fishes using 670 comparisons between parent populations and their hybrid progeny. Five hundred and seventy-six comparisons involved first generation hybrids (F1), and a much smaller number (94) involved second generation hybrids (F2). The overall response to outbreeding in the F1 and F2 generations was positive and significant (F1: d i+* = 0.425 ± 0.121; F2: d i+* = 0.548 ± 0.295, where d i+* is the effect size of studies within generations); however, responses differed when studies were separated into groups describing the experimental environment, taxon, or trait. Findings may be biased by a few studies of large effect. Genetic distance explained little of the variance in effect sizes across studies. Results of the meta-analysis suggest that there is no reliable predictor for the effects of outbreeding in fishes, although inconsistencies in experimental design were noted across studies. Future research should include comparisons in both parental environments in order to detect the underlying mechanisms of outbreeding depression, and should focus on measurement of equivalent sets of fitness-related traits. Experimental design should permit estimation of genetic distances based on quantitative traits, which may in turn be meaningful predictors of the outcomes of outbreeding depression. Concerted and consistent research in this area will provide information of relevance to conservation, aquaculture and evolutionary studies.  相似文献

In rare plants that often occur in small or isolated populations the probability of selfing between close relatives is increased as a consequence of demographic stochasticity. The mode of pollination (selfing, outcrossing) may have considerable effects on seed traits and offspring performance and hence potential viability. Since current efforts aiming at the restoration of floodplain grasslands through the transfer of plant material from species-rich source stands may lead to the establishment of initially small populations consisting of founders from different populations, the present paper experimentally investigated the effects of pollen source and floral types (i.e. chasmogamous (CH) and cleistogamous (CL) flowers) on seed traits and offspring performance in three highly endangered violet species (Viola elatior, V. pumila, V. stagnina) of these grasslands. We estimated inbreeding depression and tested the performance of selfed and outcrossed offspring in two microbial environments, i.e. in soil inoculated with (i) non-sterile substrate from the same species (‘home’-conditions) and (ii) sterilised substrate.Plants produced more CL capsules than CH flowers. Pollinator exclusion had only small effects on CH seed production. CL seeds had a significantly lower mass per seed than CH seeds. This may be related to constraints in allocation or environmental conditions. Seedling growth was reduced in plants grown under ‘home’-conditions as compared to control soils. Under ‘home’-conditions, relative fitness of selfed seedlings of V. stagnina was significantly higher than that of crossed progeny. Our results suggest that high genetic differentiation among populations as a consequence of isolation may result in outbreeding depression, e.g., through biochemical or physiological incompatibilities between genes or the breaking of coadapted gene complexes. In V. stagnina, offspring fitness differed considerably between environments, but in general we found no indications for inbreeding depression in these rare species.  相似文献
