The purpose of this study was to explore new insights in non-linearity, hysteresis and ventilation heterogeneity of asthmatic human lungs using four-dimensional computed tomography (4D-CT) image data acquired during tidal breathing. Volumetric image data were acquired for 5 non-severe and one severe asthmatic volunteers. Besides 4D-CT image data, function residual capacity and total lung capacity image data during breath-hold were acquired for comparison with dynamic scans. Quantitative results were compared with the previously reported analysis of five healthy human lungs. Using an image registration technique, local variables such as regional ventilation and anisotropic deformation index (ADI) were estimated. Regional ventilation characteristics of non-severe asthmatic subjects were similar to those of healthy subjects, but different from the severe asthmatic subject. Lobar airflow fractions were also well correlated between static and dynamic scans (R2 > 0.84). However, local ventilation heterogeneity significantly increased during tidal breathing in both healthy and asthmatic subjects relative to that of breath-hold perhaps because of airway resistance present only in dynamic breathing. ADI was used to quantify non-linearity and hysteresis of lung motion during tidal breathing. Non-linearity was greater on inhalation than exhalation among all subjects. However, exhalation non-linearity among asthmatic subjects was greater than healthy subjects and the difference diminished during inhalation. An increase of non-linearity during exhalation in asthmatic subjects accounted for lower hysteresis relative to that of healthy ones. Thus, assessment of non-linearity differences between healthy and asthmatic lungs during exhalation may provide quantitative metrics for subject identification and outcome assessment of new interventions.  相似文献

We evaluated four-dimensional cone beam computed tomography (4D-CBCT) ventilation images (VICBCT) acquired with two different linear accelerator systems at various gantry speeds using a deformable lung phantom.The 4D-CT and 4D-CBCT scans were performed using a computed tomography (CT) scanner, an X-ray volume imaging system (Elekta XVI) mounted in Versa HD, and an On-Board Imager (OBI) system mounted in TrueBeam. Intensity-based deformable image registration (DIR) was performed between peak-exhale and peak-inhale images. VICBCT- and 4D-CT-based ventilation images (VICT) were derived by DIR using two metrics: one based on the Jacobian determinant and one on changes in the Hounsfield unit (HU). Three different DIR regularization values (λ) were used for VICBCT. Correlations between the VICBCT and VICT values were evaluated using voxel-wise Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient (r).In case of both metrics, the Jacobian-based VICBCT with a gantry speed of 0.6 deg/sec in Versa HD showed the highest correlation for all the gantry speeds (e.g., λ = 0.05 and r = 0.68). Thus, the r value of the Jacobian-based VICBCT was greater or equal to that of the HU-based VICBCT. In addition, the ventilation accuracy of VICBCT increased at low gantry speeds.Thus, the image quality of VICBCT was affected by the change in gantry speed in both the imaging systems. Additionally, DIR regularization considerably influenced VICBCT in both the imaging systems. Our results have the potential to assist in designing CBCT protocols, incorporating VICBCT imaging into the functional avoidance planning process.  相似文献

Objectives

This study uses a virtual framework to examine the left maxillary fragment of the juvenile fossil from Mugharet el'Aliya, Morocco, found in association with an Aterian lithic industry. Previously, this fossil had been ascribed to modern humans or the Neanderthal lineage based on its “archaic”/“Neanderthal-like” features and apparent large size. Here, we conducted a novel 3D shape comparative analysis of the maxillary fragment to clarify its taxonomic affinities with regard to its size and ontogeny.

Materials and Methods

Eighty Computed Tomography and surface scans representing ontogenetic samples of Homo sapiens and Homo neanderthalensis were used to capture species-specific differences. The toolkit of geometric morphometrics in combination with surface registration and an elastic iterative closest point algorithm were used to create a dataset of meshes with an identical number of corresponding vertices for the maxillae. Multivariate statistics were applied to Procrustes superimposed coordinates derived from the vertices of this dataset.

Results

Our analysis showed affinities of the Mugharet el'Aliya individual with our H. sapiens sample, especially with a subadult individual from Qafzeh. No size-independent affinities with Neanderthals of comparable dental age could be identified.

Discussion

Our results add to the evidence connecting fossils from western Asia, especially Qafzeh and Skhul, and the North African Aterian. Furthermore, Mugharet el'Aliya adds to our knowledge of the ontogenetic development of adult morphology that is frequently used to characterize hominin groups, for example, Neanderthals and modern humans.  相似文献

The incidence of natural fructification ofChondrostereum purpureumwas estimated quantitatively on southern Vancouver Island during two winter seasons in randomly located 1000-m2plots and compared with potential added fructification that might occur as a result of using the fungus to control stump-sprouting of hardwood weeds in young forest stands. Fructification was surveyed in forests as well as in urban or agricultural areas by estimating the surface areas of woody substrates covered with basidiocarps. In addition to random plots, estimates were made also in locations where the fungus would be expected to occur (woodpiles, silvicultural thinnings, and killed trees). Basidiocarps were found throughout the area in various types of forest cover as well as in urban or agricultural situations. The amount of added fructification through the use of the fungus as a biological control agent was determined from inoculated plots as well as from calculated stump-surface areas developed from published stand-density data. Added fructification was multiplied by a factor representing the maximum biological control frequency in order to compare added fructification with natural fructification values. From the various calculations, it was determined that the added fructification ofC. purpureumis of the same order of magnitude as naturally occurring levels or even lower. In addition, there is a distinct geographical separation between predominantly forestry and predominantly settled areas where fruit and ornamental trees are cultivated. Accordingly, it was concluded that using the fungus as a biological control agent in forestry is not likely to pose a significant threat to fruit growing and commercial forests.  相似文献

Measurement of static alignment of articulating joints is of clinical benefit and can be determined using image-based registration. We propose a method that could potentially improve the outcome of image-based registration by using initial manual registration. Magnetic resonance images of two wrist specimens were acquired in the relaxed position and during simulated grasp. Transformations were determined from voxel-based image registration between the two volumes. The volumes were manually aligned to match as closely as possible before auto-registration, from which standard transformations were obtained. Then, translation/rotation perturbations were applied to the manual registration to obtain altered initial positions, from which altered auto-registration transformations were obtained. Models of the radiolunate joint were also constructed from the images to simulate joint contact mechanics. We compared the sensitivity of transformations (translations and rotations) and contact mechanics to altering the initial registration condition from the defined standard. We observed that with increasing perturbation, transformation errors appeared to increase and values for contact force and contact area appeared to decrease. Based on these preliminary findings, it appears that the final registration outcome is sensitive to the initial registration.  相似文献

The occurrence and development of ischemic stroke are closely related to cerebral blood flow. Real‐time monitoring of cerebral perfusion level is very useful for understanding the mechanisms of the disease. A wide field of view (FOV) is conducive to capturing lesions and observing the progression of the disease. In this paper, we attempt to monitor the whole‐brain microcirculation in middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) rats over time using a wide FOV swept‐source OCT (SS‐OCT) system. A constrained image registration algorithm is used to remove motion artifacts that are prone to occur in a wide FOV angiography. During ischemia, cerebral perfusion levels in the left and right hemispheres, as well as in the whole brain were quantified and compared. Changes in the shape and location of blood vessels were also recorded. The results showed that the trend in cerebral perfusion levels of both hemispheres was highly consistent during MCAO, and the position of the blood vessels varied over time. This work will provide new insights of ischemic stroke and is helpful to assess the effectiveness of potential treatment strategies.   相似文献

Selected biological control agents and conventional pesticides were used to critically review the applicability of a newly developed Risk Indicator (RI) system. Five basic components are proposed for the calculation of the overall environmental risk score: persistence of the active ingredient, dispersal potential, range of non-target organisms that are affected, and direct and indirect effects on the ecosystem. Several risk measurement systems were reviewed; risk categories in the proposed system were modified from a model developed for classical biocontrol agents. Additionally, one new category was included, to assess the risks to vertebrate non-target species. Besides a detailed discussion of the new RI model, the suitability of the model was demonstrated by calculating the risk scores for 17 selected products. It became obvious that the environmental risk score varied greatly within the assessed chemical products, and also within the group of biological products. The use pattern greatly influenced the estimated environmental risk posed by any given product. The overall environmental risk score varied between a very low risk score of 24 (Coniothyrium minitans, soil application) and a near maximum risk score of 4275 (high risk reference DDT, foliar spray). The proposed model can be used to communicate environmental risk and to design lower risk integrated pest management strategies. It is suggested that the proposed RI system may serve to define low risk and reduced risk pesticides. Yet, it remains debatable whether the RI will be useful in determining acceptability of data waivers for regulatory purposes.  相似文献

Model-image registration techniques have been used extensively for the measurement of joint kinematics in vivo. These techniques typically utilize an explicit measurement of X-ray projection parameters (principal distance, principal point), which is easily done for prospective studies. However, there is vast opportunity to derive useful information from previously collected clinical radiographic films where the projection parameters are unknown. The purpose of this study was to determine variation in measured knee arthroplasty kinematics when the X-ray projection parameters were unknown, but bounded. Based on the clinical radiographic protocol, a nominal principal point was chosen and eight additional points ±2 and ±5 cm in the horizontal and vertical directions were defined. Tibiofemoral kinematics were determined for all nine projection parameter sets for a series of 10 lateral radiographs. In addition, the principal distance was varied ±15 cm and tibiofemoral kinematics were determined for these two projection sets. Measured joint kinematics varied less than 0.6° and 0.4 mm for ±2 cm variations in principal point location, and 0.7° and 0.6 mm for ±5 cm variations in principal point location. Measured joint kinematics varied less than 0.6° and 0.7 mm for ±15 cm variations in principal distance. Variation in X-ray principal point and principal distance over clinically bounded ranges has a small effect on knee arthroplasty kinematics computed from model-image registration with high-quality clinical radiographs.  相似文献
