Amid discussions of an agricultural crisis and the failure of largescale, mechanized, capitalintensive development schemes in Nigeria, the Kofyar of Plateau State provide a case study of farmers spontaneously expanding food crop production for the market, using indigenous lowenergy technology. Temporary, followed by permanent, migration from the Jos Plateau homeland to frontier settlements on the fertile Benue plains has been accompanied by a change from initial shifting cultivation in forest clearings to permanent, intensively tilled and fertilized homestead fields. Labor is organized primarily in households that have grown in size and complexity. Cooperative and exchange work groups are also important for meeting seasonal bottlenecks and providing the careful, disciplined cultivation that intensive agriculture requires. Kofyar now devote up to 50% of their labor to cash crops, and they purchase considerable quantities of manufactured goods and medical services. Their uncoerced adaptation to an environment of new land resources and market incentives suggests both the advantages of indigenous development with a minimum of state control or interference and the limitations of a conventional dependency theory perspective. 相似文献

Limnological data (Dec. 1980–Jan. 1982) on the plankton and water chemistry of Lamingo Dam, located within the Jos biotite granite area of the Plateau State (Nigeria) are presented. The water-body falls in Beadle's (1981) category I of African lakes (conductivity < 40 µS cm–1). Following the successful introduction ofEpidinocarsis lopezi (De Santis) for biological control of the cassava mealybug (CM)Phenacoccus manihoti Mat.-Ferr. in southwestern Nigeria in 1981 and 1982, 11 groups of cassava fields were sampled every 2 weeks up to 1988 for
impact assessment. After 1984, CM populations remained mostly below 10 per tip despite the presence of native hyperparasitoids,
demonstrating the long-term success of biological control byE. lopezi in the region. Indigenous polyphagous coccinellids were found only during peak host densities, whereas the specificE. lopezi was common throughout the year. During some periods, percentage parasitism indicated delayed density dependence. Since 89%
of all sampled cassava tips had no CM at all and the parasitisme is very mobile, parasitization rates were also calculated
for individual infested tips (N=4,878). Parasitism increased slightly with host density on tips having between 1 and 10 CM
of the 3rd and 4th instars, indicating positive density dependence. Such tips comprised 64% of all infested tips. At higher host densities,
parasitism rates fell rapidly. The results are discussed in view of different theories on population regulation by biological
control agents.

Root rot of pawpaw (Carica papaya L.) reported in Nigeria is caused byPythium aphanidermatum which was consistently isolated from diseased plant parts and highly pothogenic. Out of 16 different media tested, it grew best on corn-meal-agar (CMA) and CMA supplemented with cellulose and sucrose. The highest number of oospores/ml was on CMA with average diameter of 19.9±0.1 µm. The symptom is characterized by dark brown rot of roots, absence of secondary roots and disintegration of internal tissue of the main root. Field trials were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of neem seed, garlic clove, onion bulb, ginger rhizome and pawpaw leaf extracts applied as foliar spray in controlling cercospora leaf spot of groundnut in the Sudan savanna of Nigeria during the 2002 and 2003 cropping seasons. Ridomil was used as a positive check while the control was left untreated. Three spray regimes (once, twice and thrice) were evaluated. A strip plot design with three replications was used in setting up the experiments. Ex-Dakar, a cercospora leaf spot susceptible Spanish Valencia groundnut variety, was used as planting material. All the plant extracts reduced the incidence and severity of cercospora leaf spot in both seasons compared to the untreated crops. However, neem seed and garlic clove extracts significantly reduced the incidence and severity of the disease compared to the other plant extracts. Ridomil was more effective in controlling the disease than the plant extracts. Three sprays with the plant extracts gave better control of the disease than one or two sprays in the season. The highest seed yield of 3115 kg/ha and 3311 kg/ha in 2002 and 2003, respectively, were obtained with neem seed extract treatment while the lowest seed yield of 2134 kg/ha and 2334 kg/ha in 2002 and 2003, respectively, were recorded from the untreated crops. Also the highest seed yield of 3124 kg/ha and 3418 kg/ha in 2002 and 2003, respectively were obtained following three sprays compared to 2523 kg/ha and 2641 kg/ha for one spray in 2002 and 2003, respectively and 2840 kg/ha and 3085 kg/ha for two sprays in 2002 and 2003, respectively. The highest haulm yield of 4121 kg/ha and 4089 kg/ha in 2002 and 2003, respectively were also obtained following treatment with neem seed extract. The lowest haulm yield of 2951 kg/ha and 3045 kg/ha in 2002 and 2003 respectively, were recorded from the control. Three sprays gave higher haulm yield (4265 kg/ha and 4279 kg/ha in 2002 and 2003, respectively) than one and two sprays in the season. Neem seed extract could therefore be used to control cercospora leaf spot and to improve groundnut production in the Sudan savanna of Nigeria. 相似文献

Bacterial blight disease caused by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. manihotis (Berthet-Bondar) Dye was assessed in 11 artificially inoculated cassava genotypes in a screenhouse. Disease progress was estimated at intervals of 3 days by measuring the length of necrotic lesions on stems and leaves, as well as estimating the average disease score and area under disease progress curve (AUDPC). Based on the average disease scores, cassava genotypes 30572, TME 1, TME 7 and TME 9 were classified as resistant to bacterial blight, genotypes 4(2)1425, TME 2, TME 4 and TME 12 were tolerant while cassava genotypes 30001, TME 3, and TME 28 were susceptible. Direct correlations, statistically significant at p < 0.05, were obtained between stem necrosis, leaf necrosis, average disease scores and AUDPC in the 11 cassava genotypes. Screenhouse experiments afford rapid assessment of resistance status of cassava genotypes to bacterial blight in Nigeria. 相似文献

A multilocational field experiment to determine the influence of cassava growth and development on tuberous root rots in Onne and Sabongidda-Ora humid forests and in the Ibadan derived savanna of Nigeria was carried out from June 2003 to November 2005. Healthy cassava stems of TME-1 (local), TMS 30572 and TMS 4 (2) 1425 (both improved) were planted in a randomised complete block design with three replications. The experiment was repeated and the data collected were statistically analysed using the general linear model statistical procedures with the SAS system for Windows. Experimental result showed tuberous root rot incidence and severity to be pronounced at 12 months after planting in Onne and Sabongidda-Ora humid forests but less at the Ibadan derived savanna. Local TME-1 variety had the highest root rot incidence of 53% and severity of 21% while improved TMS 4(2)1425 variety had the least root rot incidence and severity at 0% each. 相似文献
