The present report describes a mermithid nematode (Nematoda: Mermithidae) and a gordiid hairworm (Nematomorpha: Chordodidae) from Early Cretaceous Burmese amber dated at 100-110 million years. The mermithid, Cretacimermis protus sp. n., is emerging from a biting midge (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) while the hairworm, Cretachordodes burmitis, gen. n., sp. n. had already emerged from its host. These rare specimens represent the first fossil mermithid parasite of a ceratopogonid midge and second oldest described nematode and the earliest known and only Mesozoic fossil of the phylum Nematomorpha. A list of previously described fossil mermithids is included.  相似文献

Phylogenetic relationships within the group of molting protostomes were reconstructed by comparing the sets of 18S and 28S rRNA gene sequences considered either separately or in combination. The reliability of reconstructions was estimated from the bootstrap indices for major phylogenetic tree nodes and from the degree of congruence of phylogenetic trees obtained by different methods. By either criterion, the phylogenetic trees reconstructed on the basis of both 18 and 28S rRNA gene sequences were better than those based on the 18S or 28S sequences alone. The results of reconstruction are consistent with the phylogenetic hypothesis classifying protostomes into two major clades: molting Ecdysozoa (Priapulida + Kinorhyncha, Nematoda + Nematomorpha, Onychophora + Tardigrada, Myriapoda + Chelicerata, and Crustacea + Hexapoda) and nonmolting Lophotrochozoa (Plathelminthes, Nemertini, Annelida, Mollusca, Echiura, and Sipuncula). Nematomorphs (Nematomorpha) do not belong to the clade Cephalorhyncha (Priapulida + Kinorhyncha). It is concluded that combined data on the 18S and 28S rRNA gene sequences provide a more reliable basis for phylogenetic inferences.__________Translated from Molekulyarnaya Biologiya, Vol. 39, No. 4, 2005, pp. 590–601.Original Russian Text Copyright © 2005 by Petrov, Vladychenskaya.  相似文献

Abstract. A mermithid, a parasite of a spider (Araneae: Thomisidae) in Baltic amber (40 mya), is described as Heydenius araneus n.sp. (Nematoda: Mermithidae) and represents the first fossil record of a nematode parasite of an arachnid. After a critical examination of reports of naturally occurring helminths of extant spiders, I conclude that although mermithid parasitism is well established in this host group, previous reports of hairworm parasites of spiders are "nomina dubia," putative records, or refer to mermithid nematodes.  相似文献

Two questions are of interest concerning the male reproductive system in Gordiida: (1) is the epithelium surrounding the testis continuous or discontinuous and (2) is the type of spermatozoon as described at the transmission electron-microscopical level for the two species of Gordius typical for all Gordiida? An examination of the South American species Pseudochordodes bedriagae has allowed us to add new information to this poorly studied phylum. Testicular tubes are large, filled with spermatozoa, and surrounded by a continuous epithelium. The epithelial cells that line the posterior testes occasionally overlap, and their cytoplasm is narrow and contains dense granules, abundant endoplasmic reticulum, and vesicles. The plasma membrane possesses microvilli with many filaments. This epithelium rests on a basement membrane. The spermatozoa in P. bedriagae resemble the known spermatozoa of two Gordius species but differ in presenting a uniform halo layer of less dense chromatin that surrounds the dense chromatin in the nucleus. The finding that a similar type of spermatozoa occurs in both genera (Pseudochordodes and Gordius) makes it likely that it is present in all other Gordiida and is therefore an autapomorphy of the Gordiida.  相似文献

Abstract. Details of the life cycle of freshwater nematomorphs (gordiids) remain unclear. Free-living aquatic larval gordiids must make a critical transition from an epibenthic aquatic environment to terrestrial hosts. In order to identify potential hosts capable of bridging this ecological gap, the specificity of paratenic hosts of three common species of North American gordiids was investigated. All three species were characterized by an identical infection pattern: low host specificity. Gordiids were able to encyst within annelids, mollusks, crustaceans, insects and a vertebrate. Three species of putative host (a turbellarian, a water mite, and a mosquito larva) were not infected with any of the gordiid species. Internal defense reactions (IDR) and feeding behaviors are implicated as preventing infection in these species. Several of the other host species produced either an IDR or an immune reaction to the cysts, although reactions to the cysts were highly variable between species. In most species, IDR did not cause noticeable harm to the encysted larvae. It is proposed that although many species are easily infected with gordiid cysts, most do not act as natural paratenic hosts. For some of these host groups, especially snails, a role as reservoir host is suggested. Of all hosts included in this study, aquatic insects were identified as the hosts likely responsible for spanning the ecological gap and acting as true hosts for gordiids.  相似文献

The cuticle of Chordodes nobilii Camerano, 1901 is composed of a proximal layer with about 30 sheets of large fibers in alternating orientations and a distal layer, which mainly forms the surface structures, the areoles. The three different types of areoles, simple, tubercle and crowned areoles, are formed mainly by material of strong and medium electron density. The tubercle areoles have a basal constriction and paired spherical structures of unknown function below the base. Irregularly distributed are paired, cushion-like structures, from which projections traverse the cuticle and run into the epidermis. In the crowned areoles, these cushions also send projections into the apical filaments. A comparison with the few ultrastructurally described cuticles from other species reveals some similarities between the cuticles of C. nobilii and Paragordius varius, making it probable that the cushion-like structures are homologous. However, Pseudochordodes bedriagae, which is more closely related to Chordodes than Paragordius, lacks the cushions. Problematic is the interpretation of different cuticular structures in Gordius. If correctly determined, areoles are present in some Gordius species and resemble in their structure areoles from other species. If areoles have to be regarded as homologous, the absence of a distal layer and areoles would have to be interpreted as a secondary reduction in species such as Gordius aquaticus.  相似文献

The literature suggests that chemical communication by primer and releaser pheromones may be extensive within the helminths. Although our detailed knowledge of these events is sparse, the number of reports indicates that a chemical mediation of developmental, reproductive, and behavioral processes may be mandatory in the nematodes, acanthocephala, and other aschelminths. Accordingly, this review presents a summary of our current status.  相似文献

The musculature of larvae of Gordius aquaticus was investigated by laser-scanning microscopy and compared to transmission electron microscopic data for the larva of Paragordius varius. In the anterior portion of the body, the preseptum, four different muscle groups can be distinguished: (1) 12 anterior parietal muscles in the body wall, (2) six oblique muscles that function as retractors of the introvert, (3) six proboscideal muscles, which function as retractors for the proboscis, and (4) six muscles associated with spines of the outermost of the three rings of spines. The posterior portion of the body, the postseptum, possesses four pairs of longitudinal muscle strands in G. aquaticus, the postseptal parietal muscles, that are located dorsolaterally and ventrolaterally. These are not clearly visible in P. varius, where instead three pairs of parietal muscles are present. Additional small muscles are associated with the terminal spines and with the duct running from the pseudointestine to the body wall. All fibers show a cross-striated pattern although this striation is less obvious at the ends of the fibers.  相似文献

The temporal occurrence and dispersal of stoneflies were investigated at a forest stream in the South Island, New Zealand. Although 12 species were taken in Malaise traps, only Spaniocerca zelandica and Cristaperla fimbria (Notonemouridae) were abundant. Adults of S. zelandica were present throughout the year and a wide range of different-sized nymphs, including very small individuals, was also found in all months. In contrast, the emergence period of C. fimbria was limited to about four months in summer and as nymphs are mainly hyporheic, few were taken in Surber samples. Malaise trapping on a 16 m long transect away from the stream and with more distantly located traps in forest and grassland resulted in a very high proportion of males and females of both species being caught within 1 m of the stream edge. Captured females of both species included immature, gravid, and spent individuals. Males and females of both species had almost identical diets dominated by sooty mould fungi, fungal spores, pollen and fine particulate organic matter. High proportions of them were also infected by the encysted larvae of a gordian worm (Nematomorpha) and may be important vectors in its life cycle.  相似文献

Chordodes mizoramensis, a new species of freshwater gordiid horsehair worm, is described from Mizoram, NE India on the basis of scanning electron microscopic and morphometric studies. The new species can be distinguished from its congeners in that the apical filaments of the crowned areoles are branched several times, a pattern that has not been observed in other species. An additional distinguishing character is that it has more bulging areoles, which are distributed among simple areoles alone or in groups, do not form clear patterns.  相似文献
