Body odors contribute to mate recognition and sexual partner preference in many mammals, including ferrets. We used a habituation/dishabituation procedure to test whether sex steroid hormones influence whether ferrets will approach and investigate different concentrations of volatile anal scent gland odors from male and female conspecifics. When tested with high concentrations of anal scent gland secretions in oil vehicle, gonadectomized male and female ferrets that received no sex steroids reliably discriminated anal scents from male and female conspecifics. This discrimination most likely reflects gender recognition rather than individual recognition because gonadectomized, sex steroid-treated ferrets discriminated between anal scents of males and females but not between anal scents of individual males or females. Treatment with either the estrogen receptor agonist, estradiol benzoate (EB), or the androgen receptor agonist, 5-alpha dihydrotestosterone proprionate (DHTP), increased investigation of low concentrations of anal scent by gonadectomized ferrets. These data suggest that ferrets could use anal scent gland secretions in mate recognition and that seasonal increases in circulating sex steroid hormones increase ferrets' responsiveness to low concentrations of these odors.  相似文献

Behaviour is usually assumed to depend on the reach of a critical intensity--termed reactivity threshold--by its motivation. This view represents a simple, predictive theoretical framework in ethology and animal psychology. However, it is here argued that only the influence of an isolated motivation on behaviour can be explained that way; that such a view fails to account for behaviour when several motivations are jointly activated. Upon analysis, the classical theory of behaviour (CTB) proves to be under-specified and thus leads to three conceptual problems that make it logically inconsistent for the study of multiple motivations. A revision of the CTB, called anticipatory dynamics model (ADM), is then developed in order to bring a theoretical solution to these conceptual problems. The ADM hypothesizes that an organism's motivational interactions are due to the limitation of the organism's attentional resources.  相似文献

Extinction performance is often used to assess underlying psychological processes without the interference of reinforcement. For example, in the extinction/reinstatement paradigm, motivation to seek drug is assessed by measuring responding elicited by drug-associated cues without drug reinforcement. However, extinction performance is governed by several psychological processes that involve motivation, memory, learning, and motoric functions. These processes are confounded when overall response rate is used to measure performance. Based on evidence that operant responding occurs in bouts, this paper proposes an analytic procedure that separates extinction performance into several behavioral components: (1-3) the baseline bout initiation rate, within-bout response rate, and bout length at the onset of extinction; (4-6) their rates of decay during extinction; (7) the time between extinction onset and the decline of responding; (8) the asymptotic response rate at the end of extinction; (9) the refractory period after each response. Data that illustrate the goodness of fit of this analytic model are presented. This paper also describes procedures to isolate behavioral components contributing to extinction performance and make inferences about experimental effects on these components. This microscopic behavioral analysis allows the mapping of different psychological processes to distinct behavioral components implicated in extinction performance, which may further our understanding of the psychological effects of neurobiological treatments.  相似文献

In connection with the development of a test method for the attractiveness and appropriateness of nests for laying hens, we carried out an investigation by using a preference test and motivation measuring with the help of push doors. Hens were offered two different nest sites either consisting of a tray filled with wood shavings (litter tray) or a wooden nest box plus wood shavings (nest box). Hens were individually housed in pens (2.0 m × 2.0 m) and had free access to the nest sites until they laid their 15th egg. From that day the hens had to overcome a push door to reach the nest sites. Resistance for entrance was also increased stepwise at the door leading to the hens’ nest. The experiment ended when a hen stopped to lay in her usual nest site for four consecutive days (postexperimental period). The behaviour during the last hour before oviposition was video taped at a level of resistance of 3.5, 6.0, 7.5 and 10.0 N.The hens were categorized into nest and litter layers depending on nest choice. All but one hen pushed maximum resistances between 11.5 and 18.0 N with no differences between nest and litter layers. Behaviour did not significantly change with increasing levels of resistance, but there were significant differences between nest and litter layers. Nest layers spent more time nesting than litter layers while the latter showed a strong tendency to more exploring behaviour. For litter layers, more entries through the push door leading to their nest site and more unsuccessful pushes were detected than for nest layers. According to our results, two types of layers could be distinguished whereas the two were equally motivated to access their nest site.  相似文献

This article reviews a long-term investigation into the roles of (1) experience obtained with infants during development and postnatally, and (2) levels of reproductive-steroid hormones during late pregnancy, in the regulation of maternal caregiving motivation and behaviour in the red-bellied tamarin (Saguinus labiatus) and the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) (family Callitrichidae, Order Primates). Both observational studies, e.g. post hoc analysis of the relationship between developmental caregiving experience and infant-rearing success, and manipulative studies, e.g. direct analysis of the effects of sex-steroid administration on maternal motivation, were performed. In red-bellied tamarins, a breeding female's infant-rearing success was related to its caregiving experience obtained during development and postpartum/postnatally. In multiparous females lacking developmental caregiving experience, postpartum maternal caregiving behaviour and infant-rearing success were related to prepartum urinary oestradiol levels. In nulliparous common marmosets, caregiving of infant-siblings increased as a consequence of physical interaction with parent-infant dyads, late pregnancy, and exposure to late pregnancy-like levels of progesterone and oestradiol. The evidence for a dual mechanism of endocrine and experiential regulation of caregiving in these monkeys is discussed in terms its evolution and function.  相似文献

The biogenic amine serotonin is thought to play an important role in aggression in many species, including man. This paper summarizes experimental approaches which attempt to link this neuromodulator with fighting in a crayfish model for which the complex agonistic behavior is well characterized. Based on a quantitative analysis of fighting we demonstrate that the infusion of small amounts of serotonin into freely-moving crayfish alters fighting behavior by specifically interfering with the timing of a treated animal's decision to withdraw from an encounter. In the presence of added serotonin, fights last considerably longer compared to controls, but no changes were detected in the rules of escalation, the likelihood of initiating an interaction, or its eventual outcome. Attempts to dissect the underlying neuronal mechanisms pharmacologically hinged on fluoxetine as a potent inhibitor of serotonin re-uptake. Although no behavioral changes were associated with acute infusion of fluoxetine alone, in combination with serotonin it effectively prevented the previously observed fight-enhancing effects. Our data strongly support the significance of functional amine re-uptake mechanisms for behavior and continued use of this invertebrate model should prove a promising route to unravel further the complex bases of aggression. In recent years it has become possible to develop animal models of psychiatric disease in genetically modified mice. While great strides have been made in the development of genetic and neurobiological tools with which to model psychiatric disease, elucidation of neural and molecular mechanisms thought to underlie behavioral phenotypes has been hindered by an inadequate analysis of behavior. This is unfortunate given the fact that the experimental analysis of behavior has created powerful methods for isolating and describing the functional properties of behavioral mechanisms that are capable of providing deep understanding of behavioral phenotypes. A better understanding of the biological basis of normal behavior and its disturbance in psychiatric disease will require the application of these rigorous behavior analytic tools to animal models. In this review we provide an example of a merging of genetic and behavioral methods and illustrate its utility in the analysis of a mouse model of the motivational deficits in schizophrenia. The synergy between basic behavior analysis, neuroscience, and animal models of psychiatric disease has great potential for achieving a deeper understanding of behavior and its neurobiological mechanisms as well as for leading to improvements in diagnosis and treatment in clinical settings.  相似文献

Melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) is an inhibitory neuropeptide mainly synthesized in neurons of the lateral hypothalamus and incerto-hypothalamic area of mammals that has been implicated in behavioral functions related to motivation. During lactation, this neuropeptide is also expressed in the medial preoptic area (mPOA), a key region of the maternal behavior circuitry. Notably, whereas MCH expression in the mPOA progressively increases during lactation, maternal behavior naturally declines, suggesting that elevated MCHergic activity in the mPOA inhibit maternal behavior in the late postpartum period. To explore this idea, we assessed the maternal behavior of early postpartum females following bilateral microinfusions of either MCH (50 and 100 ng/0.2 μl/side) or the same volume of vehicle into the mPOA. As expected, females receiving 100 ng MCH into the mPOA exhibited significant deficits in the active components of maternal behavior, including retrieving and nest building. In contrast, nursing, as well as other behaviors, including locomotor activity, exploration, and anxiety-like behavior, were not affected by intra-mPOA MCH infusion. The present results, together with previous findings showing elevated expression of this neuropeptide toward the end of the postpartum period, suggest that modulation of mPOA function by MCH may contribute to the weaning of maternal responsiveness characteristic of the late postpartum period.  相似文献

Summary The metabolic rate of free-flying honeybees, Apis mellifera ligustica, was determined by means of a novel respirometric device that allowed measurement of CO2 produced by bees foraging under controlled reward at an artificial food source. Metabolic rate increased with reward (sugar flow rate) at the food source. In addition, there was no clear-cut dependence of metabolic rate on load carried during the visit, neither as crop load nor as supplementary weights attached to the thorax. BackgroundLifestyle modification is widely recommended to kidney allograft recipients post transplantation due to the cardiometabolic risks associated with immunosuppression including new-onset diabetes, weight gain and cardiovascular events. However, we have no actual evidence that undertaking lifestyle modification protects from any adverse outcomes post transplantation. The aim of this study is to compare whether a more proactive versus passive interventional approach to modify lifestyle is associated with superior outcomes post kidney transplantation.Methods/designWe designed this prospective, single-centre, open-label, randomised controlled study to compare the efficacy of active versus passive lifestyle intervention for kidney allograft recipients early post transplantation. A total of 130 eligible patients, who are stable, nondiabetic and between 3 and 24 months post kidney transplantation, will be recruited. Randomisation is being undertaken by random block permutations into passive (n = 65, leaflet guidance only) versus active lifestyle modification (n = 65, supervised intervention) over a 6-month period. Supervised intervention is being facilitated by two dietitians during the 6-month intervention period to provide continuous lifestyle intervention guidance, support and encouragement. Both dietitians are accredited with behavioural intervention skills and will utilise motivational aids to support study recruits randomised to active intervention. The primary outcome is change in abnormal glucose metabolism parameters after 6 months of comparing active versus passive lifestyle intervention. Secondary outcomes include changes in a wide array of cardiometabolic parameters, kidney allograft function and patient-reported outcome measures. Long-term tracking of patients via data linkage to electronic patient records and national registries will facilitate long-term comparison of outcomes after active versus passive lifestyle intervention beyond the 6-month intervention period.DiscussionThis is the first randomised controlled study to investigate the benefits of active versus passive lifestyle intervention in kidney allograft recipients for the prevention of abnormal cardiometabolic outcomes. In addition, this is the first example of utilising behaviour therapy intervention post kidney transplantation to achieve clinically beneficial outcomes, which has potential implications on many spheres of post-transplant care.
