Aggression between species is a seldom-considered but potentially widespread mechanism of character displacement in secondary sexual characters. Based on previous research showing that similarity in wing coloration directly influences interspecific territorial aggression in Hetaerina damselflies, we predicted that wing coloration would show a pattern of character displacement (divergence in sympatry). A geographical survey of four Hetaerina damselfly species in Mexico and Texas showed evidence for character displacement in both species pairs that regularly occurs sympatrically. Hetaerina titia, a species that typically has large black wing spots and small red wing spots, shifted to having even larger black spots and smaller red wing spots at sites where a congener with large red wing spots is numerically dominant (Hetaerina americana or Hetaerina occisa). Hetaerina americana showed the reverse pattern, shifting towards larger red wing spots where H. titia is numerically dominant. This pattern is consistent with the process of agonistic character displacement, but the ontogenetic basis of the shift remains to be demonstrated.  相似文献

The effect of the slave system on demography can be revealed by examining the age-sex structure of slave populations. The age-sex structure of slaves in Harris County, Texas is investigated using the 1850 and 1860 slave schedules. Median ages for black and mulatto slaves suggest that the population was young. Population pyramids exhibit a narrow base and top with a broad middle. The high proportion of slaves between 10 and 30 years of age and the increase in population size between 1850 and 1860 were mainly related to the importation of slaves and only partly due to natural increase. The data also show that black slaves were older on small plantations while mulattoes were older on larger farms. It is suggested that differential treatment in terms of purchase practices, assignment of tasks, food allocation, and/or differential susceptibility to infectious diseases may account for this pattern.  相似文献

Long-column laboratory tests were performed to validate improvements to the MOFAT program for simulating LNAPL displacement and entrapment in response to a fluctuating water table. The long-column tests consisted of a fluctuating water table and its subsequent displacement and entrapment of an LNAPL. The modifications of MOFAT include a linear LNAPL trapping estimate and a new scaling technique for the inhibition portion of the fluctuation (water table rise). Improved prediction of the LNAPL trapping was obtained by assuming the amount of LNAPL that is trapped by a rising water table is proportional to the antecedent water content of the porous medium. The pressure-saturation relationship for the air-water drainage system was scaled to estimate the LNAPL-water and air-LNAPL drainage relationships. Scaled inhibition pressure-saturation relationships are improved by incorporating a correction for contact angle hysteresis and surface roughness. The incorporation of these changes into MOFAT led to noticable improvements in the numerical simulation of the experimental data.  相似文献

There is a striking difference in body size of jungle cats ( Felis chaus ) in the west and the east of their distribution, with Israeli cats being 43% heavier than Indian cats. We tested the hypothesis that increasing competition from other small felids towards the east is responsible for the difference in body size. We measured jungle cat skulls for eight cranial and dental variables and related these to independent variables such as species richness (local and regional), latitude, longitude, temperature, and precipitation. Data from a narrow band between latitudes 24.0°N and 33.9°N, where Bergmann's rule was largely not observed, showed that the western population (≤ 50.0°E longitude) of jungle cats is larger than the eastern (> 60.0°E longitude) population with the size difference being most evident in the upper carnassials (P4L). Species richness at the regional level showed a significant negative relation to P4L. An even spacing in condylobasal length for a small-cat guild from India through null model analysis indicated the occurrence of character displacement. The results support the hypothesis that competition is responsible for geographical variation in jungle cat body size in the region where Bergmann's rule does not apply. © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 92 , 163–172.  相似文献

Synopsis The effects of constant and diurnally fluctuating levels of dissolved oxygen on the growth of young-of-the-year winter flounder,Pseudopleuronectes americanus, were examined under controlled laboratory conditions. Fish were exposed for either 10 or 11 weeks to constant levels of 6.7 (high) and 2.2 (low) mg l–1, and a diurnal fluctuation, ranging from 2.5 to 6.4 mg 02l–1. Growth rates, calculated for both standard length and weight, for fish exposed to low and diurnally fluctuating levels were significantly reduced (p < 0.001) as compared to those for fish exposed to the high level. Growth rates of fish exposed to the high level were over twice those of fish held under low oxygen conditions. Under fluctuating conditions, fish grew at intermediate rates. Following these exposures, all fish were subsequently held at 7.2 mg Oz l–1 for five weeks. Growth rates increased over two and a half times for fish previously exposed to the low oxygen level and were significantly (p < 0.001) higher than for the other two groups.  相似文献

Synopsis The population dynamics and predator-prey relationship of pike, Esox lucius, and perch, Perca fluviatilis, were examined in simple fish communities in two adjacent shallow lakes, Lochs Kinord and Davan, Deeside, Scotland. Few perch survive to age 3 but Z is low for fish > 3 years and perch live up to 17 years. Population fecundity remained relatively high and constant in perch because of the multi-age spawning stock and the presence of older more fecund perch. Growth rates of perch in both lochs are relatively high as a consequence of low stock abundance. The N, B, and P of adult perch were unusually low. The age range of pike, and N, B, P, and growth were in the range of values reported elsewhere. There was little variation in the strength of pike year classes and the importance of cannibalism and low occurrence of alternative prey in the lochs suggest that the populations were self-regulating. Cannibalism by adults was responsible for most of mortality in perch larvae, and predation by pike and adult perch was responsible for the majority of juvenile losses. This conclusion is supported by the high biomass ratios of pike:juvenile perch of 1.0–30.8. While the number of adult fish was almost equal, the biomass of adult pike was 2–3 × that of perch in Kinord and 6 × in Davan. In L. Kinord, where year class strength was stable, high predation pressure from perch and pike reduced perch abundance rather than eliminated year classes. Perch year classes fluctuated in abundance in L. Davan and were eliminated in the first summer in two sampling years. The pike, and particularly the perch populations, have features characteristic of fish communities in unperturbed ecosystems: namely, a wide range of age classes, stability in biomass with variation dampened by longevity, and low production.  相似文献

Summary Experiments conducted on rocky bottoms at 7–11 m depth in the San Juan Archipelago, Washington assessed effects of canopies of understory kelps on growth of benthic suspension feeders, determined the mechanisms responsible for effects, and assessed the influence of kelp canopies on survivorship of benthic fauna. Kelp canopics influenced growth rates of diverse suspension feeders. At several sites the musselMytilus edulis, the barnacleBalanus glandula, and the serpulid polychaetePseudochitinopoma occidentalis grew faster on the bottom beneath kelp canopies than on nearby exposed substrata. The cheilostome bryozoanMembranipora membranacea showed a mixed response to kelp canopies, growing faster in exposed regions at one site, but faster beneath canopies at another. There were no differences in growth of 2 other species (the cheilostome bryozoanCheilopora praelonga and the spongeMyxilla incrustans) between kelp and no-kelp treatments; however, some processes influenced by plant canopies affected their growth. Specific mechanisms responsible for kelp effects on growth were assessed in a series of field experiments usingPseudochitinopoma, Membranipora, Cheilopora andMyxilla. Particulate deposition on the bottom, which is more intense beneath canopies, negatively affected growth of all 4 species. Kelps also reduced rates of flow and prevented devented development of microalgal turfs beneath the canopy.Pseudochitinopoma grew faster in the weaker flows below canopies and bothCheilopora andMyxilla grew faster where there were no microalgal turfs. These other effects of kelp canopies were at least as important to growth (in the cases ofCheilopora andMyxilla) or more important to growth (in the case ofPseudochitinopoma) than were the general, deleterious effects of higher sedimentation beneath canopies. The lower growth rates caused by higher sedimentation beneath kelp canopies did not result in higher rates of animal mortality. Surprisingly, kelp canopies typically did not influence mortality due to predation. For 7 of 12 taxa, mortality rates did not differ between kelp-covered and exposed treatments. Significantly higher mortality occurred outside canopies for only 4 of 12 taxa, and for at least 2 of these 4 differences probably were not related to predation.Mytilus, a species rare at these depths, exhibited higher mortality beneath kelp canopies due to predation by crabs. Other macrophytes in fresh and salt water, as well as some benthic animals that create complex, 3-dimensional habitats, should influence benthic organisms and assemblages in ways analogous to the kelps acting through their effects on flow, particle transport, and shading.  相似文献

Synopsis The very sparse data that are available on the abundance, population structure and biology of the coelacanth Latimeria chalumnae off Grand Comoro are summarised, and some simple numerical analyses are carried out to explore certain aspects of the population dynamics, particularly the age-profile of the population. The object has not been to provide estimates of key demographic parameters, such as mortality rates, but to propose various scenarios that are useful for comparison with real data as they become available. The analysis also makes it possible to reach some preliminary conclusions that are relevant to the management of the coelacanth population. For instance, it appears that the catch rate of coelacanths by artisanal fishermen may have a negligible effect on coelacanth survivorship, and it is more likely that population size and structure are determined by natural mortality rates and birth rates. It is suggested that predation is the main cause of natural mortality and that the main predators of coelacanths are likely to be large sharks. Interference with the traditional patterns of the Comoran artisanal fishery may threaten the coelacanth. Several important gaps in our knowledge of coelacanth demography are identified.  相似文献

Summary Impacts of predators, food levels and cannibalism on population growth of G. buenoi were studied in two experiments using field exclosures. In the first experiment, experiments using field exclosures. In the first experiment, impacts of (1) predation by freshwater invertebrates and (2) food limitation on gerrid populations were considered in a 2 x 2 factorial design, using food supplements and elimination of predators as the experimental treatments. In the second experiment, the possible contribution of intraspecific predation to fitness of gerrid cannibals was assessed.Presence of invertebrate predators decreased egg-adult survivorship 2–3 fold and decreased the range of juvenile development times. The main predators noted in this study were fishing spiders (Dolomedes), backswimmers (Notonecta), larvae of predaceous diving beetles (Dytiscus), and dragonfly naiads (Aeshna). Food supplements, at 50–200% (by weight) of average natural surface fall, did not significantly effect survivorship but were associated with decreases in mean development time and with increases in whole body dry mass of teneral adults. Increases were greater for females than for males, suggesting that females are more likely to be protein limited under field conditions. Absence of predators was associated with smaller body size among teneral adults of G. buenoi, suggesting that screening out aquatic predators also had significant impact on food available to semi-aquatic bugs. Results of the second experiment demonstrate that the food cache hypothesis (Polis 1980) does not hold for G. buenoi. Neither survival to the adult stage nor dry mass of teneral males differed significantly between groups with or without access to early stages as potential prey. Dry mass of teneral females with access to younger stages during their own development was significantly less than for those without access to gerrid prey, suggesting that competition among stages for food was more important than cannibalism in, this experiment.A more comprehensive version of a paper presented at the XVII Int Cong Entomol, Hamburg, Federal Republic of Germany as part of a symposium entitled Phylogeny, Bionomics and Ecology of Waterstriders (Hemiptera, Gerridae)  相似文献

Analyses of human mortality data classified according to cause of death frequently are based on competing risk theory. In particular, the times to death for different causes often are assumed to be independent. In this paper, a competing risk model with a weaker assumption of conditional independence of the times to death, given an assumed stochastic covariate process, is developed and applied to cause specific mortality data from the Framingham Heart Study. The results generated under this conditional independence model are compared with analogous results under the standard marginal independence model. Under the assumption that this conditional independence model is valid, the comparison suggests that the standard model overestimates by 4% the effect on life expectancy at age 30 due to the hypothetical elimination of cancer and by 7% the effect for cardiovascular/cerebrovascular disease. By age 80 the overestimates were 11% for cancer and 16% for heart disease. These results suggest the importance of avoiding the marginal independence assumption when appropriate data are available — especially when focusing on mortality at advanced ages.  相似文献
