《Fungal Ecology》2019
Fungivorous millipedes (subterclass Colobognatha) likely represent some of the earliest known mycophagous terrestrial arthropods, yet their fungal associates remain elusive. Here we describe relationships between fungi and the fungivorous millipede, Brachycybe lecontii. Their fungal community is surprisingly diverse, including 176 genera, 39 orders, four phyla, and several undescribed species. Of particular interest are twelve genera conserved across wood substrates and millipede clades that comprise the core fungal community of B. lecontii. Wood decay fungi, long speculated to serve as the primary food source for Brachycybe species, were absent from this core assemblage and proved lethal to millipedes in pathogenicity assays while entomopathogenic Hypocreales were more common in the core but had little effect on millipede health. This study represents the first survey of fungal communities associated with any colobognath millipede, and these results offer a glimpse into the complexity of millipede fungal communities. 相似文献

At high dosages, infective-stage juveniles of Neoaplectana carpocapsae and Heterorhabditis heliothidis were able to penetrate into and kill the garden millipede. Nematode development was inhibited by host defense reactions which consisted of encapsulation and enmeshment in tracheoles and connective tissue surrounding the millipede's midgut. Foreign bacteria quickly entered the millipede's hemocoel at death and out-competed the nematode's symbiotic bacteria, Xenorhabdus sp. The dauer stages of an unidentified rhabditid nematode were associated with the living millipede. These nematodes reproduced on the millipede's cadaver. 相似文献

The millipede genus Chamberlinius is basically confined to Taiwan, with only one of the four known species presumably introduced to southern Japan. Both previously known species are redescribed, based on new material: Chamberlinius hualienensis Wang, 1956 (the type species) and Chamberlinius piceofasciatus (Gressitt, 1941), the latter being a new subjective senior synonym of Chamberlinius shengmui Wang, 1957, syn. n. Two further congeners are described as new: Chamberlinius pessior sp. n. and Chamberlinius sublaevus sp. n. The genus is re-diagnosed, all of its four species are keyed, and their distributions mapped. The tribe Chamberlinini is reclassified and, based on gonopod traits, shown to comprise the following five genera: Chamberlinius Wang, 1956, Haplogonosoma Brölemann, 1916, Riukiupeltis Verhoeff, 1939, Aponedyopus Verhoeff, 1939 and Geniculodesmus Chen, Golovatch and Chang, 2008. 相似文献

Dicranogonus
pix Jeekel, 1982 occurs in Victoria and Tasmania, Australia, including the islands in eastern Bass Strait between the two States. There is only slight gonopod variation across this range, but Dicranogonus
pix populations with and without paranota are separated in Bass Strait by the ca 50 km-wide gap between the Kent and Furneaux Groups of islands. 相似文献

The millipede genus Aponedyopus is endemic to Taiwan and contains three species. All previously described nominal species are considered to represent one species: Aponedyopus montanus Verhoeff, 1939 (the type species), including Aponedyopus reesi (Wang, 1957) and Aponedyopus maculatus Takakuwa, 1942, syn. n. Two further species are described as new: Aponedyopus similissp. n. and Aponedyopus latilobatussp. n. The genus is re-diagnosed, all of its three species are keyed, and their distributions mapped. 相似文献

The calcified exoskeleton of millipedes plays a crucial role in resisting large forces developed during burrowing locomotion. I measured morphological and mechanical properties of cuticle from the neotropical forest floor millipede, Nyssodesmus python (Diplopoda: Polydesmidae), which ranges in body mass from 2 to 7 g. Scaling of thickness of the cuticle with respect to body mass followed predictions of geometric similarity. Both fracture strength and Young's modulus increased with body mass in females but not in males. In spite of their smaller size, male millipedes were still stronger, on average, than female millipedes. Mean fracture strength of millipede cuticle was 124 MPa, and Young's modulus was 17 GPa. Both of these values exceed measurements from typical insect cuticle, suggesting that calcium salts may play a role in stiffening and strengthening the millipede exoskeleton. Because of the high density of calcified millipede cuticle (1660 kg/m3), stiffness and strength relative to body weight remain comparable to values for other insect cuticles. These results corroborate a previous hypothesis that absolute not specific strength and stiffness have been selective factors in the evolution of millipede cuticle, and that bulkiness of the exoskeleton has been minimized through the deposition of calcium salts. 相似文献

The genus Orthomorpha is currently represented in Laos by nine species, including three, O. paviei Brölemann, 1896, O. communis Likhitrakarn, Golovatch & Panha, 2011 and O. cambodjana (Attems, 1953), which are new to the fauna of the country, and further three new to science: O. suberectoides

The large Southeast Asian genus Desmoxytes is slightly rediagnosed. A number of troglomorphic, most likely troglobitic, species occur in southern China. A key is provided to all 10 Desmoxytes spp. currently known from China, including three new presumed troglobites: Desmoxytes eupterygotasp. n. from Hunan Province, as well as Desmoxytes spinissimasp. n. and Desmoxytes luisp. n. from Guangxi Province. "Desmoxytes" philippina Nguyen Duc & Sierwald, 2010, from the Philippines, is formally removed from Desmoxytes, but not assigned to another genus. It probably belongs in a new genus in the subfamily Australiosomatinae, tribe Antichiropodini, close to the Bornean Euphyodesmus Attems, 1931 and Borneochiropus Golovatch, 1996. 相似文献

Occurrence records for named, native Australian millipedes from the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) and the Atlas of Living Australia (ALA) were compared with the same records from the Millipedes of Australia (MoA) website, compiled independently by the author. The comparison revealed some previously unnoticed errors in MoA, and a much larger number of errors and other problems in the aggregated datasets. Errors have been corrected in MoA and in some data providers’ databases, but will remain in GBIF and ALA until data providers have supplied updates to these aggregators. An audit by a specialist volunteer, as reported here, is not a common occurrence. It is suggested that aggregators should do more, or more effective, data checking and should query data providers when possible errors are detected, rather than simply disclaim responsibility for aggregated content. 相似文献
