Laboratory feeding trials were conducted to determine how light intensity affects foraging success by the visual piscivore, the largemouth bass ( Micropterus salmoides ). Foraging success was greater than 95% at light levels ranging from low intensity daylight (2.43 × 102 lx) to moonlight (3 × 10−3 lx), but declined significantly to 62% at starlight (2 × 10−4 lx) and near 0% in total darkness. Over a range of low to high water clarities (0.5, 2.0, and 4.0 m Secchi depth), estimated depth limits for feeding during the day ranged between 5.5 to 44 m and from 1.6 to 13 m at night during a full moon. At starlight, light intensity rapidly attenuated to a level below the feeding threshold within 0.5 m of the surface at all water clarities. The depth of the water column available for feeding in low clarity water (0.5 m Secchi) was 67 and 75% less than at moderate (2.0 m Secchi) and high (4.0 m Secchi) water clarities. The findings illustrate how differences in the light environment can have important ramifications for predator-prey interactions.  相似文献

Widespread mouth ulcerations were observed in largemouth bass collected from eight inland lakes in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan during the summer months of 2002 and 2003. These ulcerations were associated with, and most likely caused by, leech parasitism. Through the use of morphological dichotomous keys, it was determined that all leeches collected are of one species: Myzobdella lugubris. Among the eight lakes examined, Lake Orion and Devils Lake had the highest prevalence of leech parasitism (34% and 29%, respectively) and mouth ulcerations (53% and 68%, respectively). Statistical analyses demonstrated that leech and ulcer prevalence varied significantly from one lake to the other. Additionally, it was determined that the relationship between the prevalence of ulcers and the prevalence of leech attachment is significant, indicating that leech parasitism is most likely the cause of ulceration. The ulcers exhibited deep hemorrhagic centers and raised irregular edges. Affected areas lost their epithelial lining and submucosa, with masses of bacteria colonizing the damaged tissues. Since largemouth bass is a popular global sportfish and critical to the food web of inland lakes, there are concerns that the presence of leeches, damaged buccal mucosa, and general unsightliness may negatively affect this important sportfishery.  相似文献

Climate change will ultimately affect the supply and quality of freshwater lakes and rivers throughout the world. This study examines the potential impacts of climate change on freshwater fish distributions in Canada. Climate normals data (means from 1961 to 1990) from Environment Canada were used to map current climate found throughout the tertiary watersheds of Canada. Logistic regressions based on these climate data were used to develop predictive presence‐absence equations for (a) common commercially and recreationally important species and (b) an Arctic freshwater species and a freshwater fish species of conservation significance listed by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife (COSEWIC). The Canadian Centre for Climate Modelling and Analysis Global Coupled Model 2(IS92a) provided forecasts of Canada's climate in 2020 and 2050. The data from this scenario and the logistic regressions provided a ready framework for predicting the potential distributions of the fishes. Physical and ecological barriers would have to be overcome for the distribution of these species to actually change in response to climate change. Generally, coldwater species may be extirpated from much of their present range while cool and warm‐water species may expand northward. Species that are limited to the most southern regions of the country may expand northwards. A conceptual framework for assessing potential climate change impacts on fishes and the variety of management strategies required to deal with these impacts are discussed. Our forecasts demonstrate the need for climate change assessments in species at risk as well as for common species.  相似文献

Four genetically distinct stocks of age 2+ years largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides were produced using adults collected from two regions in the upper midwest (central Illinois, IL and south-eastern Wisconsin, WI, U.S.A.). Two pure stocks (IL × IL and WI × WI), as well as both of their reciprocal F1 interstock hybrids (IL × WI and WI × IL) were produced in research ponds in Champaign, IL. In general, swimming performance, routine oxygen consumption and activity were highest at 18 × C, intermediate at 12 × C, and lowest at 6. C for all stocks. However, performance indicators varied among stocks at each of the temperatures. The pure Illinois stock (IL × IL) had the lowest activity: cost ratio at 18 × C and the highest at 6_ C (based upon swimming strength, routine activity rates and routine metabolic rates). The opposite pattern was observed for the other pure stock (WI × WI). Although differences were less distinct at lower temperatures, the two pure stocks (IL × IL and WI × WI) outperformed both interstock hybrids. These results indicate that not only do non-native stocks appear to have reduced performance relative to locally adapted stocks, but also that interstock hybrids exhibit performance impairments, not hybrid vigour.  相似文献

We examined how hunger affected habitat use by juvenile smallmouth bass, Micropterus dolomieu, as they moved among a variety of habitat patches. Hungry and satiated fish were placed in an artificial stream that contained three types of habitat patches: pools with uniform depth and low water velocities, mazes with uniform depth and moderate water velocities, and riffle-pool complexes with varying depth and the highest water velocities. Food was only available in the riffle-pool complexes. Hungry fish spent more time in the riffle-pool complex than satiated fish did. However, hungry and satiated fish did not differ in the time it took to exit the pool they were initially placed in, the number of patches entered, or the number of times they moved among patches. Both hungry and satiated fish frequently entered other patches after foraging successfully in the riffle-pool complexes. There was wide variation in foraging behavior among individuals in both treatment groups, and we consistently observed individuals that did not alter their foraging behavior in response to the difference in food availability among patches.  相似文献

 To test the size range of prey fish that largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides, can successfully consume, live Japanese dace, Tribolodon hakonensis, were given as prey fish to individual largemouth bass in aquaria. The ratio of maximum standard length (SL) of the Japanese dace consumed by largemouth bass was 46–69% of bass SL. The maximum length of Japanese dace consumed did not differ significantly between largemouth bass and smallmouth bass (M. dolomieu) previously studied, although largemouth bass have relatively larger mouth sizes than smallmouth bass. Largemouth bass occasionally injured and killed Japanese dace larger than the limit that could be consumed.  相似文献

Direct field measurements of the energetic expenditure on parental care and within-nest reproductive success of individual male smallmouth bass Micropterus dolomieui were determined by measuring the change in total body mass as well as by total body electroconductivity analysis (TOBEC™). With TOBEC, the change in total body lean mass of the same live individual was measured non-destructively at the beginning and end of the parental care period. Lean mass was the primary source of energy utilized during parental care indicating starvation and potential loss of future reproduction. Individual loss in lean mass was related positively to reproductive success suggesting that the energy expended during parental care does affect individual fitness.  相似文献

Introduced predatory fishes have had consistently severe consequences for native fishes in stream environments around the world, although the drivers of these effects are often unclear. In the Swartkops River headwaters in South Africa, native Eastern Cape redfin Pseudobarbus afer were always absent from sites occupied by non‐native black basses Micropterus salmoides and Micropterus dolomieu, but generally co‐occurred with the native predators Anguilla marmorata and Anguilla mossambica. A natural experiment provided by flood‐mediated recolonization of black‐bass occupied sites by P. afer demonstrated depletion in black‐bass invaded sites. Field behavioural observations of P. afer indicated that they foraged among benthic cover during the day, but suspended in open water at night. As the nocturnal A. marmorata and A. mossambica foraged actively within structural cover at night and M. dolomieu and M. salmoides are diurnal or crepuscular predators, P .afer is thus optimized to avoid predation by native anguillid predators and not the functionally unique predatory black basses. The integration of distributional, temporal population dynamics and behavioural data suggests that the severe effects of Micropterus spp. are probably a consequence of prey naïveté and behaviour evolved to evade native predators.  相似文献

Introgressive hybridization between Micropterus dolomieu and Micropterus salmoides was assessed in their invaded South African range using nine microsatellite markers and two mtDNA gene regions. Although M. dolomieu and M. salmoides are distantly related, indicated by the large uncorrected pairwise distances observed between the two species, mitochondrial introgression and unidirectional admixture was detected.  相似文献

为了研究在低蛋白质饲料中补充晶体必需氨基酸对大口黑鲈生长、体组成和免疫指标的影响,根据鱼体的必需氨基酸组成模式设计了7种等能的试验饲料。其中4种饲料(45CP、40CP、35CP和30CP)的粗蛋白质水平分别为45%、40%、35%和30%,另3种饲料(40AA、35AA和30AA)是在低蛋白质饲料(40CP、35CP和30CP)的基础上添加必需氨基酸,使它们的必需氨基酸含量与45CP(对照组)相一致。用上述饲料对初始体重为(10.13±0.01)g的大口黑鲈进行了89d的饲养试验。饲养试验在室内循环水养殖系统中进行,每种饲料设3个重复,每重复放养30尾鱼。方差分析显示:试验鱼的生长性能、饲料效率、全鱼和肌肉的粗蛋白质含量、成活率以及免疫指标均随着饲料蛋白质含量的降低而显著降低(P0.05)。添加必需氨基酸的35AA和30AA的饲料效率和蛋白质保留率分别显著高于对应的未添加必需氨基酸的35CP和30CP组(P0.05),但仍显著低于45CP组(P0.05)。40AA的试验鱼血清溶菌酶活性和血清补体活性与45CP组差异不显著(P0.05)。35AA和30AA组的头肾白细胞呼吸爆发活性显著高于35CP和30CP组(P0.05)。30AA组的全鱼粗蛋白质含量以及肥满度显著高于30CP(P0.05)。各组试验鱼的水分和灰分均无显著差异(P0.05)。回归分析显示:在低蛋白质饲料中补充晶体必需氨基酸对大口黑鲈幼鱼的生长、饲料效率和蛋白质保留率所产生的影响与其引起增加了的饲料蛋白质水平而不是饲料的必需氨基酸水平正相关。研究表明,在低蛋白质饲料中补充的晶体必需氨基酸对大口黑鲈的生长、体组成和免疫指标产生的有益作用不及等量的以蛋白质为来源的必需氨基酸。  相似文献
