Menispermaceae is one of the core groups of Ranunculales. The single fertile ovule in each ovary in Menispermaceae varies greatly in integument number, micropyle formation, and integument lobe. However, data regarding ovule morphogenesis in the family are very limited. In this study, we document ovule development of selected species in the Menispermaceae using scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy. Ovule development in Menispermaceae shows the following characteristics. Two ovules are initiated in a young carpel, one of them degenerates gradually and the other develops into a fertile ovule in subsequent stages. Bitegmic in Sinomenium Diels. and Cocculus DC. and unitegmic in Stephania Lour. The formation of unitegmy is probably due to integumentary shifting. The annularly initiated inner integument is of dermal origin and has 2–3 cell layers in the family, but the semi-annularly initiated outer integument is of both dermal and subdermal origin. Both inner and outer integument are cup-shaped at maturity. The cup-shaped outer integument is formed due to the outer integument's extension to the concave (adaxial) side of the funiculus. The obturator is well developed and consists of 2–3 cell layers in Cocculus or 9–11 cell layers in Stephania. Ovule development of Menispermaceae suggests some common characteristics between Cocculus and Sinomenium, and derived unitegmy supports molecular data that indicate Stephania is one of the late-diverging lineages in the family. Integument lobations are present. The sterile ovule shows variations in the degeneration process. These results will provide evidence for exploring the evolution of ovules in Ranunculales. 相似文献

The main alkaloids in leaves, stems and rhizomes of Antizoma angustifolia, a traditional medicinal plant of the family Menispermaceae, were isolated and identified. The main compound in leaves is almost invariably crotsparine, while stems and rhizomes have several other alkaloids (glaziovine, pronuciferine, bulbocapnine, salutaridine, cissacapine, insularine) in lower yields. These results do not agree with a previous study, where salutaridine was identified as the main alkaloid. Salutaridine was detected as a minor constituent of the rhizomes of only one of the samples. Alkaloids appear to be quite variable within different plant parts and different provenances of A. angustifolia, a fact that may explain the apparent absence of salutaridine in our samples. 相似文献

Small diameter pyritized axes, commonly referred to as 'twigs', of fossil vitaceous and menispermaceous wood from the Lower Eocene, London Clay Formation of south-east England are described here for the first time. The vitaceous twigs, which represent the earliest known occurrence of fossil Vitaceae wood, are characterized by large diameter, solitary vessels, tall wide rays which dilate in the phloem region, scalariform intervessel pits and simple perforation plates. The wood anatomy supports a close relationship to the Vitaceae and in particular the genus Rhoicissus Planch. The menispermaceous twigs are characterized by medium to moderately large vessels, simple perforation plates, alternate intervascular pitting and very broad and high rays. The anatomical characters support a close relationship to the Menispermaceae and in particular the genera Tinomiscium Miers and Coscinium Colebr. However, as these fossil twigs are not exactly similar to any particular genus they have been placed in the organ genus, Vitacexoylon Wheeler and LaPasha and Menispermoxylon Vozenin-Serra, Privé-Gill & Ginsburg, with which, respectively, they have the greatest similarity. Abstract. The fruit piercing moth, Eudocima fullonia (Clerck) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), whose larval host plants are vines of the family Menispermaceae in Asia, Africa and Australia, is thought to have adapted to Erythrina spp. in the Pacific and Papua New Guinea and has been designated as a separate biotype from the Australasian and African biotype. To test the hypothesis that the Pacific population of E. fullonia is a biotype, feeding trials with the host plants Tinospora homosepala Diels (Menispermaceae) and Erythrina variegata Linn. (Fabaceae) were conducted in Guam. The results indicate that the Guam population of E. fullonia is a biotype that has expanded its host range from its normal Menispermaceae plants to Erythrina species, possibly due to genetic changes and/or the presence of closely related alkaloids in both the species and paucity of menisperms. 相似文献
