This study evaluated the gait stability, variability, and complexity of healthy young adults on inclined surfaces. A total of 49 individuals walked on a treadmill at their preferred speed for 4 min at inclinations of 6%, 8%, and 10% in upward (UP) and downward (DOWN) conditions, and in horizontal (0%) condition. Gait variability was assessed using average standard deviation trunk acceleration between strides (VAR), gait stability was assessed using margin of stability (MoS) and maximum Lyapunov exponent (λs), and gait complexity was assessed using sample entropy (SEn). Trunk variability (VAR) increased in the medial-lateral (ML), anterior-posterior, and vertical directions for all inclined conditions. The SEn values indicated that movement complexity decreased almost linearly from DOWN to UP conditions, reflecting changes in gait pattern with longer and slower steps as inclination increased. The DOWN conditions were associated with the highest variability and lowest stability in the MoS ML, but not in λs. Stability was lower in UP conditions, which exhibited the largest λs values. The overall results support the hypothesis that inclined surfaces decrease gait stability and alter gait variability, particularly in UP conditions.  相似文献

PurposeTo define optimal planning target volume (PTV) margins for intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) ± knee-heel support (KHS) in patients treated with adjuvant radiotherapy.MethodsComputed tomography (CT) scans ± KHS of 10 patients were taken before and at 3rd and 5th week of treatment, fused and compared with initial IMRT plans.ResultsA PTV margin of 15 mm in anteroposterior (AP) and superoinferior (SI) directions and 5 mm in lateral directions were found to be adequate without any difference between ± KHS except for the SI shifts in CTV-primary at the 3rd week. Five mm margin for iliac CTV was found to be inadequate in 10–20% of patients in SI directions however when 7 mm margin was given for iliac PTV, it was found to be adequate. For presacral CTV, it was found that the most striking shift of the target volume was in the direction of AP. KHS caused significantly less volume of rectum and bladder in the treated volume.ConclusionsPTV margin of 15 mm in SI and AP, and 5 mm in lateral directions for CTV-primary were found to be adequate. A minimum of 7 mm PTV margin should be given to iliac CTV. The remarkable shifting in presacral CTV was believed to be due to the unforeseen hip malposition of obese patients. The KHS seems not to provide additional beneficial effect in decreasing the shifts both in CTV-primary and lymphatic, however it may have a beneficial effect of decreasing the OAR volume in PTV margins.  相似文献

Cold seep environments such as sediments above outcropping hydrate at Hydrate Ridge (Cascadia margin off Oregon) are characterized by methane venting, high sulfide fluxes caused by the anaerobic oxidation of methane, and the presence of chemosynthetic communities. Recent investigations showed that another characteristic feature of cold seeps is the occurrence of methanotrophic archaea, which can be identified by specific biomarker lipids and 16S rDNA analysis. This investigation deals with the diversity and distribution of sulfate-reducing bacteria, some of which are directly involved in the anaerobic oxidation of methane as syntrophic partners of the methanotrophic archaea. The composition and activity of the microbial communities at methane vented and nonvented sediments are compared by quantitative methods including total cell counts, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), bacterial production, enzyme activity, and sulfate reduction rates. Bacteria involved in the degradation of particulate organic carbon (POC) are as active and diverse as at other productive margin sites of similar water depths. The availability of methane supports a two orders of magnitude higher microbial biomass (up to 9.6 2 10 10 cells cm m 3 ) and sulfate reduction rates (up to 8 w mol cm m 3 d m 1 ) in hydrate-bearing sediments, as well as a high bacterial diversity, especially in the group of i -proteobacteria including members of the branches Desulfosarcina/Desulfococcus , Desulforhopalus , Desulfobulbus , and Desulfocapsa . Most of the diversity of sulfate-reducing bacteria in hydrate-bearing sediments comprises seep-endemic clades, which share only low similarities with previously cultured bacteria.  相似文献

Based on new collections of abundant and well preserved material from the Salt Range (Pakistan), Spiti (Northern India) and Tulong (South Tibet), several recent studies focused on the taxonomic revision and detailed biostratigraphy of Smithian ammonoids. In this work, biochronological data for these three well-documented basins are analyzed by means of the Unitary Associations method, resulting in a biochronological scheme of unprecedented high-resolution for the Smithian of the Northern Indian Margin (NIM). Data for each basin are first processed separately, thus yielding three local biochronological zonations. Then, the three sequences are processed together as a regional three-section data set for the construction of an inter-basin sequence at the NIM level. The latter zonation comprises 16 Unitary Associations grouped into 13 zones for the entire Smithian. Analysis of ammonoid diversity dynamics based on this new highly resolved time frame highlights (i) a marked diversification during the early Smithian, (ii) a severe extinction during the late Smithian, and (iii) an overall very high turnover throughout the Smithian. At a global spatial scale and stage resolution, the diversity of Smithian ammonoid genera appears surprisingly high, as highlighted by a previous study. It is shown that at a smaller geographic scale and with the most highly resolved time frame, Smithian ammonoids of the NIM reached their explosive diversity peak essentially through extremely high turnover rates rather than through a classic diversification process of high origination rates coupled with low extinction rates. Based on recently published U/Pb ages, regional apparent total rates of origination and extinction of more than 100 species per My can be inferred for the Smithian ammonoids of the NIM.  相似文献

This article presents a risk assessment for human exposure to nonylphenol (NP). We critically reviewed and assessed all relevant full-text publications based on a variety of data quality attributes. Two categories of data, environmental monitoring and biomonitoring from exposed individuals, were used to estimate human exposure to NP. Environmental monitoring data included the measurement of NP in food, water, air, and dust. From these data and estimates of human intake rates for the sources, exposures were estimated from each source and source-specific Margins of Exposure (MOEs) calculated. However, the nature of the populations studied prevented the calculation of aggregate exposure calculations from these data. Rather, the most reliable estimates of aggregate exposure to NP were those derived from biomonitoring studies in exposed individuals. Using the daily absorbed dose estimates for NP, MOEs were calculated for these populations. The MOEs were based on the use of a No-Observed-Adverse-Effect-Level (NOAEL) for sensitive toxicological endpoints of interest, that is, systemic and reproductive toxicity from continuous-feeding more than 3.5 generations (13 mg/kg/day). The MOEs were all greater than 1000 (ranging from 2863 to 8.4 × 107), clearly indicating reasonable certainty of no harm for source-specific and aggregate (based on biomonitoring) exposures to NP.  相似文献

PurposeThe aim was to measure the cardiac motion-induced displacements of major coronary artery bifurcations utilizing electrocardiography (ECG)-gated four-dimensional computed tomography (4D-CT) and to determine the margin of coronary artery bifurcations.MethodsThirty-seven female patients who underwent retrospective ECG-gated 4D-CT in inspiratory breath hold (IBH) were enrolled. The left main coronary artery bifurcation (LM), the obtuse marginal branch bifurcation (OM), the first diagonal branch bifurcation (D1), the second diagonal branch bifurcation (D2), the caudal portion of the left anterior descending branch (APX), the first right ventricular artery bifurcation (V) and the acute marginal branch bifurcation (AM) were contoured. The center of the contour of the coronary arterial bifurcations at end systole was defined as the standard, and the margin were then calculated.ResultsThe margin in the left–right (LR), cranio-caudal (CC), and anterior-posterior (AP) coordinates were as follows: LM 3, 3, and 3 mm; D1 6, 3, and 3 mm; D2 3, 3, and 3 mm; APX 4, 4, and 4 mm; OM 4, 6, and 5 mm; V 6, 8, and 7 mm; and AM 6, 8, and 7 mm, respectively.ConclusionCoronary artery bifurcations should be considered a separate organ at risk (OAR), and different margin should be provided due to the differences resulting from motion displacement. The maximum margin in the LR, CC, and AP coordinates of left coronary artery bifurcations were 6, 6, and 5 mm, and those of the right coronary artery bifurcations were 6, 8, and 7 mm, respectively.  相似文献

Cold-water coral mounds on both margins of the Rockall Trough (NE Atlantic Ocean) have a strongly different morphology. Single, isolated mounds occur on the SE margin and are mainly found on the upper slope between 900 and 650 m water depth, while large mound clusters are found on the SW margin in water depths between 600 and 1,000 m, in a narrow zone almost parallel to the slope. Sedimentation rates on the mounds are higher than on the surrounding seabed as a result of baffling of biogenic carbonate debris and siliciclastic particles by the coral framework covering the mounds. This is confirmed by 210Pb measurements. The individual coral growth rate can be three times higher then the vertical growth rate of the coral cover (±10 mm year−1) which in turn is more than an order of magnitude higher then the present-day overall mound growth rate (±0.25 mm year−1). The presence of extensive hardgrounds and firmgrounds and the three-dimensional coral framework are considered to be responsible for the stability of the relatively steep slopes of the mounds. High current velocities in the intramound areas result in local non-sedimentation and erosion, as is shown by the presence of IRD (ice-rafted debris) lag deposits on the seabed and moats around some of the mounds. The morphology and sedimentology of cold-water coral-covered (mainly Lophelia pertusa and Madrepora oculata) mounds on the southern Rockall Trough margins (NE Atlantic Ocean) is discussed and a model describing the development of these mounds is presented.  相似文献

During the last deglaciation calving bay reentrants formed over several deep inner shelf basins around Antarctica as the ice sheets retreated. Marine diatoms flourished in spring and summer within the bays, providing exceptionally high silica flux rates to the basins on an annual basis. As a result, several hundred years of the late deglaciation are archived in many of these deep basins as continuously laminated diatom-rich marine sediments. The laminae are excellently preserved and offer a unique opportunity to study deglacial processes over the Antarctic shelf at very high resolution (subseasonal to seasonal at best). Annual palaeoenvironments from these sediments have been recently reconstructed. However, finer sedimentary detail is also apparent by the preservation of sublaminae of single diatom species, which represent discrete productivity events (blooms). In this paper, we focus on Thalassiosira tumida (Janisch) Hasle sublaminae preserved in the  5 m thick deglacial laminated sequence of NBP01-01 Jumbo Piston Core (JPC) 43B from Iceberg Alley ( 67°S, 63°E) on the Mac.Robertson Shelf, East Antarctic Margin. These T. tumida sublaminae are distinctive, occur several times throughout the deglacial sequence and are always preserved within summer laminae. Importantly they carry ecological and paleoceanographic information for deglacial Iceberg Alley and possibly the entire East Antarctic Margin. We describe and illustrate the T. tumida sublaminae using scanning electron microscope backscattered electron imagery of highly polished thin sections and secondary electron imagery of sublamina fracture surfaces. T. tumida sublaminae range in thickness from 0.57 to 21.07 mm (mean = 5.12; σ = 4.49) and are defined as discrete sedimentary intervals within a summer lamination where T. tumida is the dominant diatom species (abundance > 50%; but frequently > 80%) or is very abundant (abundance 40% to 49%). Based on the stratigraphic position of these sublaminae in the annual/seasonal succession and on published morphological, ecological and distributional data of living specimens in culture and in the field, we surmise an open-water, late summer bloom for T. tumida in deglacial Iceberg Alley, at sea-surface temperatures of 0 to − 1.69 °C, under low or fading light levels just prior to significant sea-ice formation. We suggest that the sublaminae formed by a combination of episodic T. tumida blooms (surface concentration), followed by rapid deposition (high flux) and optimal frustule preservation on the sea floor. Increased sublaminae frequency upcore suggests a lengthening of the summer season, while their complete cessation 43 years prior to the end of lamination deposition in outer Iceberg Alley (JPC43B) may be due to a coastward population shift.  相似文献

World-wide eutrophication of estuaries has made accurate estimation ofland-derived nitrogen loads an important priority. In this paper we verifypredictions of nitrogen loads made by the Waquoit Bay Nitrogen LoadingModel (NLM). NLM is appropriate for watersheds with mixes of forested,agricultural, and residential land uses, and underlain by coarseunconsolidated sediments. NLM tracks the fate of nitrogen inputs byatmospheric deposition, fertilizer use, and wastewater disposal, and assignslosses of nitrogen from each source as the nitrogen is transported throughthe land use mosaic on the watershed surface, then through the underlyingsoils, vadose zones, and aquifers.We verified predictions of nitrogen loads by NLM in two independent ways.First, we compared NLM predictions to measured nitrogen loads in differentsubestuaries in the Waquoit Bay estuarine system. Nitrogen loads predictedby NLM were statistically indistinguishable from field-measured nitrogenloading rates. The fit of model predictions to measurements remained goodacross the wide range of nitrogen loads, and across a broad range in size(10–10,000 ha) of land parcels. NLM predictions were most precise whenspecific parcels were larger than 200 ha, and within factors of 2 for smallerparcels.Second, we used NLM to predict the percentage of nitrogen loads toestuaries contributed by wastewater, and compared this prediction to the15N signature distinguishable from N derived fromatmospheric or fertilizer sources. The greater the contribution ofwastewater, the heavier the 15N value in groundwater. Thesignificant linear relation between NLM predictions of percent wastewatercontributions and stable isotopic signature corroborated the conclusionthat model outputs provide a good match to empirical measurements. Thegood agreement obtained in both verification exercises suggests that NLMis an useful tool to address basic and applied questions about how land usepatterns alter the fate of nitrogen traversing land ecosystems, and thatNLM provides verified estimates of the land-derived nitrogen exports thattransform receiving aquatic ecosystems.  相似文献
