An examination by means of electron microscopy of phytoplankton samples from 23 localities in North Wales and Anglesey yielded 14 species of Synuraceae. Eleven of these have not been recorded previously from this region, and two species are new to Britain, viz. Mallomonas pugio Bradley and Spiniferomonas trioralis Takahashi.  相似文献

A new red algal genus is described, based on the southern Australian Chaetangium corneum J. Agardh. It is reproductively unique in that while the auxiliary cell is intercalary in an adventitious filament, a defining character of the order Cryptonemiales, the vegetative structure, carpogonial branches, connecting filaments and gonimoblast development seem strongly allied to lower families of the Gigartinales. Although its predominantly thallus-inward gonimoblast development is characteristic of the gigartinalian family Furcellariaceae, it is suggested that the new alga should be placed in the Nemastomataceae and that this family exhibits features which, in an ancient algal stock, could theoretically have given rise to the lower cryptonemialian and higher gigartinalian lines. The possible relationships between the Nemastomataceae, Furcellariaceae and Solieriaceae are discussed, and some seemingly primitive features of the Nemastomataceae are enumcrated.  相似文献

The induction of shinorine (mycosporine-like amino acid (MAA)) in Anabaena variabilis PCC 7937 was studied in various culture media (BGA, BGA+, BG11 and Allen and Arnon’s). The objective was to select the most appropriate medium that can support the highest induction of MAAs and can be used for industrial production of these UV protective substances from cyanobacteria. Also, in vivo photosynthetic activity was measured under shinorine inducing conditions in all media. The shinorine content and photosynthetic activity (yield) were highest (2948.73 ± 61.13 nmol/g dry wt and 0.47 ± 0.01, respectively) in BG11 medium in comparison to others after 72 h of UV radiation. After the same duration of irradiation shinorine content was 1076.08 ± 21.77, 1320.07 ± 98.19 and 554.64 ± 16.47 nmol/g dry wt in BGA, BGA+, and Allen and Arnon’s media, respectively. Thus, BG11 medium can be used for mass production of MAAs from cyanobacteria.  相似文献

The ultraviolet (UV) absorbance of the mucus of a Great Barrier Reef damselfish Pomacentrus amboinensis was investigated with regard to ontogeny and time spent in captivity. The UV absorbance of P. amboinensis mucus increased with fish size and decreased with time spent in captivity. The wavelength of maximum absorbance of the mucus did not change with fish size, but shifted towards shorter wavelengths with increasing time spent in captivity. The UV absorbance of the mucus of fish with 'fin rot' was compared to that of similar healthy individuals, and a significant decrease in UV absorbance of unhealthy fish mucus was detected; no wavelength shifting occurred. Pomacentrus amboinensis appears to sequester mycosporine-like amino acids from the diet in order to protect epithelial tissues from UV damage, and decreases in UV absorbance in captive fish were probably due to insufficient dietary availability.  相似文献

Chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan 4 (CSPG4), a transmembrane proteoglycan originally identified as a highly immunogenic tumor antigen on the surface of melanoma cells, is associated with melanoma tumor formation and poor prognosis in certain melanomas and several other tumor types. The complex mechanisms by which CSPG4 affects melanoma progression have started to be defined, in particular the association with other cell surface proteins and receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs) and its central role in modulating the function of these proteins. CSPG4 is essential to the growth of melanoma tumors through its modulation of integrin function and enhanced growth factor receptor-regulated pathways including sustained activation of ERK 1,2. This activation of integrin, RTK, and ERK1,2 function by CSPG4 modulates numerous aspects of tumor progression. CSPG4 expression has further been correlated to resistance of melanoma to conventional chemotherapeutics. This review outlines recent advances in our understanding of CSPG4-associated cell signaling, describing the central role it plays in melanoma tumor cell growth, motility, and survival, and explores how modifying CSPG4 function and protein-protein interactions may provide us with novel combinatorial therapies for the treatment of advanced melanoma.  相似文献

Background/Aim

The Respiratory system can be affected by exposure to cold. It is well known that acute cold exposure induces asthmatic attacks. However, the influence of chronic cold environment exposure on lung perfusion and the pulmonary circulation was not studied in any previous study. Therefore this study was designed to investigates the effects of chronic cold exposure on lung perfusion using radionuclide study.

Methods

New Zealand White rabbits were used in these experiments. The rabbits were kept in the cold room (4 °C) for 7 weeks. Lung perfusion scintigraphy was performed at the end of this period. Each rabbit was injected with 74 MBq (2 mCi) technetium-99m macroaggregated of albumin (99mTc MAA). Perfusion studies were done using Gamma camera equipped with a low energy, high resolution, parallel hole collimator interfaced with a computer. Static images were obtained 5 min after administration of the radiotracer. Static images were acquired include anterior/posterior (Ant/Post), right anterior oblique/left posterior oblique (RAO/LPO), right lateral/left lateral (RLat/LLat), right posterior oblique/left anterior oblique (RPO/LAO).

Results

Rabbits chronically exposed to cold had lesser lung perfusion than controls using radionuclide perfusion study. The lung counts of chronic cold exposure (4 °C) for 7 weeks on rabbit lung perfusion for 5 min was 64±4%. (n=6, ???P<0.001).

Conclusions

Our results indicate that chronic cold exposure decreased pulmonary circulation and lung perfusion in normal subjects. Therefore chronic cold exposure might worsen some diseases that are affected by cold such as asthma.  相似文献

The induction of UV-absorbing compounds known as mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) by red, green, blue, and white light (43% ambient radiation greater than 390 nm) was examined in sublittoral Chondrus crispus Stackh. Fresh collections or long-term cultures of sublittoral thalli, collected from Helgoland, North Sea, Germany, and containing no measurable amounts of MAAs, were exposed to filtered natural radiation for up to 40 days. The MAA palythine (λmax 320 nm) was synthesized in thalli in blue light to the same extent observed in control samples in white light. In contrast, thalli in green or red light contained only trace amounts of MAAs. After the growth and synthesis period, the photosynthetic performance of thalli in each treatment, measured as pulse amplitude modulated chlorophyll fluorescence, was assessed after a defined UV dose in the laboratory. Thalli with MAAs were more resistant to UV than those without, and exposure to UV-A+B was more damaging than UV-A in that optimal (Fv/Fm) and effective (φII) quantum yields were lower and a greater proportion of the primary electron acceptor of PSII, Q, became reduced at saturating irradiance. However, blue light-grown thalli were generally more sensitive than white light control samples to UV-A despite having similar amounts of MAAs. The most sensitive thalli were those grown in red light, which had significantly greater reductions in Fv/Fm and φII and greater Q reduction. Growth under UV radiation alone had been shown previously to lead to the synthesis of the MAA shinorine (λmax 334 nm) rather than palythine. In further experiments, we found that preexposure to blue light followed by growth in natural UV-A led to a 7-fold increase in the synthesis of shinorine, compared with growth in UV-A or UV-A+B without blue light pretreatment. We hypothesize that there are two photoreceptors for MAA synthesis in C. crispus, one for blue light and one for UV-A, which can act synergistically. This system would predispose C. crispus to efficiently synthesize UV protective compounds when radiation levels are rising, for example, on a seasonal basis. However, because the UV-B increase associated with artificial ozone reduction will not be accompanied by an increase in blue light, this triggering mechanism will have little additional adaptive value in the face of global change unless a global UV-B increase positively affects water column clarity.  相似文献

The autosomal recessive disorder, hereditary tyrosinemia type 1 (HT1), is caused by a defective fumarylacetoacetate hydrolase enzyme. Consequently intermediate metabolites such as fumarylacetoacetate, succinylacetone and p-hydroxyphenylpyruvic acid accumulate. Characteristic to HT1 is the development of hepatocellular carcinoma, irrespective of dietary intervention or pharmacological treatment. Carcinogenesis may occur through a chromosomal instability mutator phenotype or a microsatellite instability phenotype, and deficient DNA repair may be a contributing factor thereof. The purpose of this study was to investigate the expression of DNA repair proteins, and the possible occurrence of microsatellite instability in HT1. Gene expression analyses show low expression of hOGG1 and ERCC1 in HT1 patient lymphocytes. Results from microsatellite instability analyses show allelic imbalance on chromosome 7 of the fah−/− mouse genome, and instability of the D2S123, D5S346 and (possibly) D17S250 microsatellite markers, in HT1 patient lymphocytes.  相似文献

Mycobacterium avium subsp. hominissuis (MAH) is an environmental bacterium causing opportunistic infections. The objective of this study was to identify flexible genome regions in MAH isolated from different sources. By comparing five complete and draft MAH genomes we identified a genomic island conferring additional flexibility to the MAH genomes. The island was absent in one of the five strains and had sizes between 16.37 and 84.85 kb in the four other strains. The genes present in the islands differed among strains and included phage- and plasmid-derived genes, integrase genes, hypothetical genes, and virulence-associated genes like mmpL or mce genes.  相似文献

The unicellular green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii has a haplontic life cycle, and forms diploid zygotes for reproduction. The zygospore, a sporulating zygote, begins germination in response to light signals, generating haploid progenies and inducing several cell-biological events; e.g., DNA synthesis and meiotic division, successively. Their regulatory mechanisms remain largely unknown, so we focused on the early stages of germination and analyzed the dynamics of gene expression associated with the germination process. The gene expression levels of zygospores at 1 and 6 h after light exposure were analyzed by a next-generation sequencing platform, the 454 GS Junior. At 6 h, the photosynthesis pathway, including its antenna proteins and two methionine metabolism-related genes (methionine synthase and sulfite reductase), were up-regulated compared to 1 h after light exposure. Meanwhile, three uncharacterized genes that contained an antibiotic biosynthesis monooxygenase domain and an HSP20/alpha crystallin family protein were specifically expressed at 1 h after light exposure. These gene expressions were also verified by quantitative real-time PCR analysis. These results suggest that the photosynthesis and methionine synthesis pathways, both of which occur in the chloroplast, are activated in zygospores at around 6 h after light exposure, and that some polyketides and/or a small heat shock protein may be related to the initiation of zygospore germination.  相似文献
