Oviposition and adult feeding of the leafminer Liriomyza trifollii (Burgess) (Diptera, Agromyzidae) on Lycopersicon pennellii (Corr.) D'Arcy and its F1 hybrid with Lycopersicon esculentum (Mill.) was significantly less than that on the cultivated tomato, L. esculentum. The resistance of L. pennellii and the F1 was reduced following rinsing of foliage with ethanol. Resistant attributes of L. pennellii were transferred to L. esculentum through appression of L. pennellii foliage to L. esculentum leaflets. Application of purified 2,3,4-tri-O-acylglucoses (the principal component of type IV glandular trichome exudate of L. pennellii) to L. esculentum significantly decreased feeding and oviposition on L. esculentum leaflets by 61–99%. Therefore the principal mechanism of resistance to this leafminer by L. pennellii is the secretion of these acylglucoses. Dose response analysis of acylglucoses applied to L. esculentum shows that dosages as low as 10% those found on L. pennellii provide large reductions (91%) in leaf punctures and mines. 相似文献

Summary As an initial step towards developing a transposon mutagenesis system in tomato, the maize transposable element Ac was transformed into tomato plants via Agrobacterium tumefaciens. Southern analysis of leaf tissue indicated that in nine out of eleven transgenic plants, Ac excised from the T-DNA and reintegrated into new chromosomal locations. The comparison of Ac banding pattern in different leaves of the same primary transformant provided evidnece for transposition during later stages of transgenic plant development. Summary A histological study ofin vitro cultured cotyledonary expiants of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) was performed in order to determine the site (differentiated tissue or developing callus) and the mode of plant regeneration.Results have shown that callus develops at the excision sites of cotyledonary expiants and that shoots are formed exclusively within the unorganized callus: excision areas are the only morphogenetic sites and the proximal excision is the preferred site for plant regeneration.Shoots differentiate by organogenesis within the superficial region of the callus. Few neocambial cells cooperate in the neoformation. Origin from a single cell is highly unlikely since rarely observed single activated cells never developed into shoots.Regenerated plants may be chimeras if invitro culture induces genetic diversity in the initial cells.Abbreviations IAA

The efficacy of avermectins B₁ and B₂ for control of Meloidogyne incognita on tomato was studied in pots and field plots for two seasons. Avermectins were applied as granules and liquid in furrows or by low pressure drip irrigation systems, at rates ranging from 0.093 to 0.34 kg a.i./ha, as single or multiple applications. Levels of control comparable to those obtained by oxamyl and aldicarb at 3.36 kg a.i./ha were achieved by the avermectin with only 1/10 the volume of chemicals applied to the environment. Microplot experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of inoculum level and time of application of Paecilomyces lilacinus on the protection of tomato against MeIoidogyne incognita. The best protection against M. incognita was attained with 10 and 20 g of fungus-infested wheat kernels per microplot which resulted in a threefold and fourfold increase in tomato yield, respectively, compared with tomato plants treated with this nematode alone. Greatest protection against this pathogen was attained when P. lilacinus was delivered into soil 10 days before planting and again at planting. Yield was increased twofold compared with yield in nematode-alone plots and plots with M. incognita plus the fungus. The relationships between indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) diffusing out of the fruit and competition among fruits, and between fruits and shoot tips were investigated using apple ( Malus domestica Borkh. cv. Jonagold) and tomato ( Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) plants. Dominant fruits always had more diffusible IAA than subordinated, inhibited fruits. Alterations in dominance – by fruit- or shoot tip removal – led to significant changes in diffusible IAA by the remaining fruits. This change could be detected one day after dominance modification.

Summary Two somatic hybrid plants generated from a single fusion event between Lycopersicon esculentum and irradiated L. pennellii protoplasts have been analyzed at the molecular level. Over 30 loci have been analyzed using isozymes and RFLPs. All loci tested on chromosomes 2–10 were heterozygous, while those loci on chromosome 12 were homozygous L. pennellii in both somatic hybrids. In one of the somatic hybrids, 2850, loci on chromosome 1 were also homozygous L. pennellii. The other somatic hybrid, 28F5, was heterozygous at all chromosome 1 loci tested, but exhibited altered stoichiometry of parental bands as compared to the sexual hybrid. Loci on chromosome 2 from both somatic hybrids have altered stoichiometry, with L. pennellii alleles being four times more abundant than expected. Both somatic hybrids contain the L. esculentum chloroplast genome, while only L. pennellii polymorphisms have been detected in the mitochondrial genome. 相似文献

Summary In tomato, nine independent EMS-induced mutants representing recessive mutations at three different loci (gib-1, gib-2, and gib-3) were isolated. Six of these have an almost absolute gibberellin requirement for seed germination and elongation growth. In addition, the leaves are darker green, smaller, and changed in structure as compared to wild type. The three other mutants, which germinate without GA, are allelic to specific, nongerminating mutants and have less severe mutant characteristics. The respective loci are situated on three different chromosomes. The genes identified by these mutants control steps in gibberellin biosynthesis, as endogenous gibberellins are strongly reduced. 相似文献
