The separate effects of the aphid‐transmitted poleroviruses; Beet mild yellowing virus (BMYV) and Beet chlorosis virus (BChV), on the yield of field‐grown sugar beet were studied following different inoculation dates from May to July in 1997,1999 and 2000. Each sugar beet plant within the appropriate plots was infected with virus using at least 10 wingless viruliferous Myzus persicae per plant. In all 3 years, overall yield losses caused by BMYV were negatively correlated with time of infection with early season (May) inoculations causing 18–27% losses in sugar yield but late season losses only 4–15%. BChV decreased the sugar yield and sugar content of beet following early season inoculations, although the effects on sugar yield were more variable (range 8–24%) and the virus appeared to be less damaging compared to BMYV. However, inoculations with BChV in July of each year caused greater root and sugar losses than inoculations with BMYV at that time. Both poleroviruses increased the sodium content of the roots early in the season, although neither virus had an effect on potassium levels at any stage.  相似文献

Barley yellow dwarf (BYD) is one of the most common diseases of cereal crops, caused by the phloem‐limited, cereal aphid‐borne Barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) (Luteoviridae). Delayed planting and controlling aphid vector numbers with insecticides have been the primary approaches to manage BYD. There is limited research on nitrogen (N) application effects on plant growth, N status, and water use in the BYDV pathosystem in the absence of aphid control. Such information will be essential in developing a post‐infection management plan for BYDV‐infected cereals. Through a greenhouse study, we assessed whether manipulation of N supply to BYDV‐infected winter wheat, Triticum aestivum L. (Poaceae), in the presence or absence of the aphid vector Rhopalosiphum padi L. (Hemiptera: Aphididae), could improve N and/or water uptake, and subsequently promote plant growth. Similar responses of shoot biomass and of water and N use efficiencies to various N application rates were observed in both BYDV‐infected and non‐infected plants, suggesting that winter wheat plants with only BYDV infection may be capable of outgrowing infection by the virus. Plants, which simultaneously hosted aphids and BYDV, suffered more severe symptoms and possessed higher virus loads than those infected with BYDV only. Moreover, in plants hosting both BYDV and aphids, aphid pressure was positively associated with N concentration within plant tissue, suggesting that N application and N concentration within foliar tissue may alter BYDV replication indirectly through their influence on aphid reproduction. Even though shoot biomass, tissue N concentration, and water use efficiency increased in response to increased N application, decision‐making on N fertilization to plants hosting both BYDV and aphids should take into consideration the potential of aphid outbreak and/or the possibility of reduced plant resilience to environmental stresses due to decreased root growth.

Green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulzer) (Hemiptera: Aphididae), an important pest of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) (Solanaceae), preferentially settles on Potato leafroll virus (PLRV)‐infected potato plants as compared with non‐infected ones, primarily in response to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released by the plants. In this study, we examined the dynamics of these effects, measuring arrestment of apterous M. persicae in response to VOC from upper, middle, and lower leaflets of PLRV‐infected potato plants at the same stage in disease progression (4 weeks after inoculation), but inoculated at 1, 3, or 5 weeks after transplanting (WAT). Sham‐inoculated plants were used as controls and VOC were collected and quantified. Aphid arrestment was greater on PLRV‐infected plants inoculated at 1 and 3 WAT as compared with sham‐inoculated plants, but this preference was reversed in plants inoculated at 5 WAT. Relative arrestment of M. persicae by infected plants and VOC release was greater for lower and middle leaflets than for upper leaflets at 1 and 3 WAT compared to sham‐inoculated plants. The reverse was observed in plants inoculated at 5 WAT. Findings indicate that aphid preference is influenced by VOC release from PLRV‐ or sham‐inoculated potato plants and that VOC emissions and aphid preference depend upon the age at inoculation and leaf position within the potato plants. The implications of these dynamics in vector behavior for spread of PLRV in the field in natural and managed systems are discussed.  相似文献
