Screening environmental samples for source-specific bacteriophage hosts using a method for the simultaneous pouring of 12 petri plates

A simple apparatus was developed to allow 12 petri plates to be poured simultaneously by hand. It was used when screening bacterial isolates from sewage and dog feces for their ability to detect phages from these sources. This was done to assess the ease with which source-specific phage hosts can be isolated from these sources of fecal pollution. Host bacteria that consistently detected phages from sewage were easily isolated from sewage. These bacterial isolates did not detect phages from dog feces. Host bacteria were not isolated from dog feces even after screening hundreds of colonies from fecal samples from six dogs. Journal of Industrial Microbiology & Biotechnology (2000) 24, 124–126. Low-volume application by mist-blower compared with conventional compression sprayer treatment of houses with residual pyrethroid to control the malaria vector Anopheles albimanus in Mexico

Abstract. Village-scale trials were carried out in southern Mexico to compare the efficacy of indoor-spraying of the pyrethroid insecticide lambda-cyhalothrin applied either as low-volume (LV) aqueous emulsion or as wettable-powder (WP) aqueous suspension for residual control of the principal coastal malaria vector Anopheles albimanus. Three indoor spray rounds were conducted at 3-month intervals using back-pack mist-blowers to apply lambda-cyhalothrin 12.5 mg a.i./m² by LV, whereas the WP was applied by conventional compression sprayer at a mean rate of 26.5 mg a.i./m².
Both treatments caused mosquito mortality indoors and outdoors (collected inside house curtains) as a result of contact with treated surfaces before and after feeding, but had no significant impact on overall population density of An. albimanus resting indoors or assessed by human bait collections. Contact bioassays showed that WP and LV treatments with lambda-cyhalothrin were effective for 12–20 weeks (>75% mortality) without causing excito-repellency.
Compared to the WP treatment (8 houses/man/day), LV treatment (25 houses/man/day) was more than 3 times quicker per house, potentially saving 68% of labour costs. This is offset, however, by the much lower unit price of a compression sprayer (e.g. Hudson 'X-pert' at US120) than a mist-blower (e.g. 'Super Jolly' at US350), and higher running costs for LV applications. It was calculated, therefore, that LV becomes more economical than WP after 18.8 treatments/100 houses/10 men at equivalent rates of application, or after 7.6 spray rounds with half-rate LV applications.     

Personal reflections on the nature of intelligence in humans and machines

Computers, the human mind, and social systems have common problems of inadequate memory and insufficient data manipulation speed. In each of these domains, information compression techniques have evolved to reduce storage and processing needs. Among the techniques for information compression, coding of information in procedures stands out as exceptionally powerful. Procedural information coding also gives rise to behavior that may be defined as intelligent. It is found in the human mind, in machines and in social systems. Its use in human thought is aided by language development which promotes regular review of abstract procedures. A practical consequence of better understanding of procedural information coding is the possibility of training people to exhibit greater mental capacity, a controversial possibility. This paper explores the impact of data processing resource limitations, data compression and procedural thinking in men and machines.     

Enhancement of oxygen transfer in highly viscous non-newtonian fermentation broths

The influence of short draft tubes covered by perforated plates on gas-liquid mass transfer was examined in external-loop airlift bioreactors. The volumetric mass transfer coefficients in a model external-loop airlift bioreactor were measured with water and non-Newtonian media. It was found that introduction of draft tubes covered with perforated plates in the riser significantly improved the mass transfer rate, particularly in higher viscous non-Newtonian fermentation media. The enhancement of mass transfer rate might be due mainly to an increase in bubble coalescence and redispersion. (c) 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

一种具有纤溶活性的枯草杆菌蛋白激酶的研究──Ⅰ高产酶菌株的筛选与鉴定

本文主要阐述了一种具有纤溶活性的枯草杆菌（Ｂａｃｉｌｌｕｓｓｕｂｔｉｌｉｓ）蛋白激酶产生菌株的筛选与鉴定的研究结果。作者从初筛的１２株Ｂａｃｉｌｌｕｓｓｕｂｌｉｌｉｓ菌中,通过对固体发酵和液体发酵所产生的枯草杆菌蛋白激酶,用琼脂糖－纤维蛋白平板法测其活性,经比较不同菌株的活性,筛选出两株高产酶菌株：Ｂ．ｓｕｂｔｉｌｉｓＨＷ—１２和Ｂ．ｓｕｂｔｉｌｉｓＨＷ—３。同时对菌体和菌落形态特点、生理生化反应进行了鉴定,认为Ｂ．ＳｕｂｔｉｌｉｓＨＷ－１２菌株可用来做为发酵生产该酶的菌种。     

Nature and origin of patterns of changes in cell shape in embryos

Spatial patterns of the future elongation of cells exist in the early embroyo. In the newt, such a pattern of changers of cell shape contributes to the formation of the neural plate. Regardless of where neural plate. Regardless of where neural plte cells are transplanted, they change shape as prescribed by tge pattern. Embryonic induction has a role in establishing this pattern.     

Immunocytochemical detection of rhamnogalacturonan II on forming cell plates in cultured tobacco cells

Rhamnogalacturonan II (RG-II) is a region of pectin macromolecules that is present in plant primary cell walls. The RG-II region serves as the site of borate cross-linking within pectin, via which pectin macromolecules link together to form a gel. In this study, we examined whether RG-II is present in the cell plate, the precursor of primary cell walls that forms during cytokinesis. A structure inside dividing cells was labeled with a rabbit polyclonal anti-RG-II antibody and detected by immunofluorescence microscopy. An antibody against callose, a marker polysaccharide for the cell plate, also labeled the structure. In immunoelectron microscopy analyses using the anti-RG-II antibody, gold particles were distributed in electron-lucent vesicular structures that appeared to correspond to the forming cell plates in late anaphase cells. Together, these results suggest that RG-II is present in cell plates from the early phase of their assembly.     

Critical roles of the TGF-β type I receptor ALK5 in perichondrial formation and function, cartilage integrity, and osteoblast differentiation during growth plate development

TGF-β has been implicated in the proliferation and differentiation of chondrocytes and osteoblasts. However, the in vivo function of TGF-β in skeletal development is unclear. In this study, we investigated the role of TGF-β signaling in growth plate development by creating mice with a conditional knockout of the TGF-β type I receptor ALK5 (ALK5^CKO) in skeletal progenitor cells using Dermo1-Cre mice. ALK5^CKO mice had short and wide long bones, reduced bone collars, and trabecular bones. In ALK5^CKO growth plates, chondrocytes proliferated and differentiated, but ectopic cartilaginous tissues protruded into the perichondrium. In normal growth plates, ALK5 protein was strongly expressed in perichondrial progenitor cells for osteoblasts, and in a thin chondrocyte layer located adjacent to the perichondrium in the peripheral cartilage. ALK5^CKO growth plates had an abnormally thin perichondrial cell layer and reduced proliferation and differentiation of osteoblasts. These defects in the perichondrium likely caused the short bones and ectopic cartilaginous protrusions. Using tamoxifen-inducible Cre-ER™-mediated ALK5-deficient primary calvarial cell cultures, we found that TGF-β signaling promoted osteoprogenitor proliferation, early differentiation, and commitment to the osteoblastic lineage through the selective MAPKs and Smad2/3 pathways. These results demonstrate the important roles of TGF-β signaling in perichondrium formation and differentiation, as well as in growth plate integrity during skeletal development.     

环凯食(饮)具大肠菌群检验纸片检测能力测试研究

研究以营养琼脂培养基的计数结果为基准,采用幅度卫生部食检所监制的两种不同厂家生产的食（饮）具大肠菌群检验纸片作为对照,对环凯食（饮）具大肠菌群检验纸片进行了检测能力测试研究,在测试中采用10cells/mL,50cells/mL和100cells/mL3个不同菌液浓度,环凯纸片的检测结果和营养琼脂平板计数结果基本一致。与其它两种纸片的检测结果无明显差异。完全可以用于食（饮）具大肠菌群的监督检验。
