The focal-animal technique assumes the continuous recording of the behavior of an individual during a certain time interval. The length of this interval (sampling unit) can be problematic when estimating the duration of behavioral acts. Two acts from the behavioral repertoire of the ant Leptothorax fuenteiwere focused on in this work at different ranges of temporal scales. Analyzing these acts we show the possibility of existence of a sampling artifact, in such a way that the estimates of the durations of the acts would be forced to depend upon the length of the sampling unit that is being used. 相似文献

The ant speciesLeptothorax tuberum was shown to be predominantly monogynous. Queens usually mate once only but some nests may have a multiply-mated queen or
are partially or serially polygynous. As expected from these results, within nest relatedness between workers and between
workers and alate queens was found to be high. Almost fifty percent of nests had no nest queen which may indicate high queen
mortality, queens leaving to found new nests or nest fragmentation. Observed female investment frequencies (IF
o
) were not significantly different from those expected on the basis of worker control of sexual production and the relatedness
estimates of workers to alate queens and workers to males calculated from isozyme data (IF
E
). These values were not consistent with queen control. There was no evidence for lower IF
o
s in queenless nests nor for higher IF
o
s in larger nests classified by worker number. When nests were classified by sexual productivity, however, there was a strong
rank correlation between productivity and female bias. This is the first study of an ant species to test observed IF against

We analyzed the sociogenetic organization of the ant (Leptothoraxacervorum) from Nrnberger Reichswald in Southern Germany. Accordingto relatedness estimates from allozyme analyses, virgin femalesexuals produced in polygynous colonies were on average fullsisters, whereas workers in a pooled sample of polygynous colonieswere significantly less closely related. Rather than attributingthis to reproductive hierarchies among nest mate queens, weshow how this phenomenon could result from seasonal fluctuationsof colony composition and a decline of the production of femalesexuals in polygynous colonies. We suggest that by queen adoptionand emigration or budding, colonies easily switch from monogynyto polygyny and vice versa. Due to the long developmental timeof sexual larvae, colonies that have become polygynous onlyrecently will still produce the female sexual progeny of a singlequeen. In older polygynous nests, fewer and fewer female sexualsare produced, but colonies may fragment into monogynous budsin which the production of female sexuals may begin again. Relatednessestimates, dissection results, and field observations supportthis suggestion. This pattern of cyclical monogyny and polygynykeeps nest mate relatedness high and probably facilitates colonyfounding in boreal habitats. Preliminary data suggest that thepattern of the production of sexuals in colonies of L. acervorumfits the expectations of sex allocation theory. 相似文献

Pupal stages of Leptothorax ants collected near West Yellowstone, MT, USA, displayed striking signs and symptoms of disease, i.e., grey to black coloration, irregular pigmentation of compound eyes and toothless mandibles. Light microscope studies revealed heavy infections by a neogregarine, the life history of which is described. The life cycle of the pathogen includes micronuclear and macronuclear schizogonies, gametogony and sporogony. Schizonts of both types vary in size depending on the number of nuclei which is usually defined by doubling, thus giving rise to 8, 16, 32, 64 or even 128 uninucleate merozoites. In smears and sections, micronuclear merozoites are typically arranged in rosettes. In the early transformation of zygotes, sickle-shaped developmental stages have been encountered, so far undescribed from neogregarines. Two spores (oocysts), each developing eight sporozoites, evolve from each gametocyst, as is typical of the genus Mattesia. Mature lemon-shaped spores measure 13.8 9.3 μm in fresh preparations. Infections can be readily transmitted to healthy colonies and to other Leptothorax species by feeding crushed infected pupae. Vegetative life cycle stages grow and multiply in the haemocoel, only to some extent they infect fat body cells. Macronuclear merozoites invade the hypodermis and the fat body but also settle extracellularly in the haemocoel. The disease process terminates with the death of the pupae that harbour abundant spores. Infections of adults have not been observed. Despite some minor differences that may result from development of the pathogen in this host, from the type, sequence and morphology of life cycle stages and from the signs and symptoms of disease, this Mattesia species is identified with M. geminata, first discovered in the tropical fire ant, Solenopsis geminata (Fabricius). 相似文献

Alate female reproductives of the facultatively polygynous andpolydomous ant, Lepiothorax curuispinosus, were reared fromfield-collected nests, mated, and introduced into either theirparental nests or alien conspecific nests. The 41 queens introducedinto alien nests were usually attacked and rejected (97. 6%),but one queen was accepted after initial aggression. The 27queens introduced into their parental nests received a variableresponse. Some were accepted without any apparent aggression(59. 3%), but others were strongly attacked and rejected (40.7%). Sequential introductions of up to four queens into particularparental nests indicated that nests consistently either acceptor reject their mated offspring. The presence or absence ofresident queens in parental nests had no apparent influenceon the acceptance of offspring queens. Nests that accepted queenshad significantly fewer workers than those that did not, butthis slight difference is unlikely to explain these dichotomousresults and could be spurious. Dissections of the introducedqueens revealed that 79. 0% were inseminated and 98. 3% haddeveloping, yolked eggs in their ovarioles, but these variableshad no apparent effect on acceptability. Similarly, the sizeof the introduced queens and the time that elapsed between matingand introduction had no apparent effect. The consistent responseof parental nests in either accepting or rejecting their matedoffspring indicates a mechanism of queen number regulation inthis species that involves characteristics of the colony ornest rather than variability among offspring queens. This mechanismcould be responsible for maintaining relatively low numbersof queens and high genetic relatedness in colonies (or individualnests) while promoting flexibility in colony reproduction bycolony fission ("budding") and the dispersal of young queens.This mechanism could also involve an important conflict of interestbetween parental colonies and their mated offspring and mightcontribute to the evolution of socially parasitic colony foundationstrategies. Acceptance of mated offspring by their parentalcolonies might only occur during certain periods in colony development,depend on the level of genetic diversity within the colony (ornest), reflect the condition of the colony, nest, queen(s),brood, or local habitat, or result from a genetic polymorphism. 相似文献

1. The study of queen polymorphisms can provide insight into the evolution of alternative life histories in ants. In this paper, results of morphological, social and genetic investigations of the newly discovered queen size dimorphism in Leptothorax cf. andrei are presented. 2. Queens had a bimodal size distribution, and were classified as large (macrogynes) or small (microgynes) queens. Despite their small size, microgynes had a fully developed external flight apparatus and a functional reproductive tract. 3. Queen morphology was not correlated with colony social structure, and the relatedness among nestmate queens was high, indicating secondary polygyny by re‐adoption of related queens (daughters) into existing colonies. 4. The distribution of microsatellite alleles indicated that there is a genetic separation between macro‐ and micro‐gynes but the two morphs belong to the same species. 5. The results support the hypothesis that microgyny in Leptothorax has not evolved as a specialisation to inter‐ or intra‐specific social parasitism but rather is an adaptation to alternative dispersal behaviour. 相似文献
