Direct measurements of phenotypic selection by parasitoids on quantitative traits in herbivorous insects have been rare. I analysed episodes of phenotypic selection on the timing of life-history events in a multivoltine leafmining moth, Phyllonorycter mespilella, and assessed the importance of hymenopterous parasitoids as selective influences. Phyllonorycter mespilella has two consecutive stages of larval development, the sap-feeding (SF) and tissue-feeding (TF) stages. Adult parasitoids host feed predominantly on SF larvae, and oviposit predominantly on TF larvae. Oviposition attack on TF larvae caused positive directional selection on the date of transition to the the TF stage (TF date) in the third generation of P. mespilella in one population in 1991. Overwinter mortality caused negative directional selection on TF date in the third generation in a second population in 1993. No directional or variance selection on TF date was detected in the second population in the second generation of 1993. Parasitoid females accepted SF larvae for oviposition more often in the fall generation than in summer generations in both populations. The relative frequencies of SF and TF larvae may alter the pattern of oviposition attack by parasitoids, and thus the form of phenotypic selection on TF date.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. 239 species of leafmining insects have been recorded from thirty-seven species of trees and large shrubs in Britain.
2. A significant species—area relationship was obtained for these insects, but it explained only 19% of the variation about the regression he. A further 23% of the variation may be accounted for by taxonomic relationship of host plants.
3. A significant correlation was established between the number of species of leafminers and those of mesophyll-feeding leafhoppers for twentyeight host tree species. Both guilds are dominated by host specific feeders.
4. It is suggested that species—area effects are important in determining species richness of phytophagous insects mainly when groups of closely related host plants are considered. With more diverse arrays of hosts, taxonomic influences, which are probably mainly chemical, may outweigh such area related effects.  相似文献

Sedentary insect herbivores, such as gallformers and leafminers, are usually non-randomly distributed among and within host plants. Dispersion of these insects is largely a function of female oviposition choice. In field experiments and observations spanning two growing seasons, we tested the hypothesis that selective oviposition on individual leaves within trees by the dominant herbivore of Emory oak, the monophagous leaf-miner Cameraria sp. nov., is determined by the probability of colonization by endophytic fungi. These fungi are alleged to act as plant mutualists by deterring, killing, or inhibiting the growth of insect herbivores. We found that leaves selected by females for oviposition and paired, unmined leaves were equally likely to be colonized by fungal endophytes. Furthermore, condensed and hydrolyzable tannin levels, purported inhibitors of fungal infection, and protein content did not vary between leaves selected by females and unmined leaves, or between leaves with and without endophyte infections. We conclude that female Cameraria do not choose leaves within trees for oviposition on the basis of propensity for endophytic fungal infection or on phytochemical parameters that might indicate probability of future infections. At this spatial scale at least, fungal endophytes do not explain the highly aggregated distribution of Cameraria among leaves and associated costs in terms of increased larval mortality. Fungal endophytes may, nevertheless, affect leafminer dispersion and abundance at larger spatial scales, such as host plant populations or species. We did find, however, that the amount of mining activity on leaves is positively associated with increased colonization by fungal endophytes. We suggest that mining activity increases endophyte fungal infections by facilitating spore germination and hyphal penetration into the leaf or by altering leaf phytochemistry. The facilitation of endophyte colonization by leafmining activity coupled with the lack of predictability of endophyte infections based on leaf phytochemistry and almost 100% infectivity of all oak leaves during sporadic wet years may prevent female leafminers from discriminating leaves for oviposition on the basis of current or future levels of endophytes in leaves.  相似文献

Data from a comparative study of the efficacy of Steinernema feltiae for the control of three species of leafminer formed the basis of an application schedule which successfully suppressed an outbreak of the statutory leafminer pest, Liriomyza huidobrensis . All three instars of Liriomyza bryoniae and L. huidobrensis were similarly susceptible to S. feltiae at 20 o C and > 90% relative humidity (RH). Although all larval instars of Chromatomyia syngenesiae were susceptible to S. feltiae , mortality was lower than for L. bryoniae . Repeat applications of S. feltiae to L. bryoniae and C. syngenesiae indicated that a nematode treatment to the second/early third instar larvae was more effective than applying higher rates of nematodes when humidities were less than 90% RH. In a trial on lettuce at a commercial glasshouse a mean L. huidobrensis mortality of 82 +/- 5% was recorded after an S. feltiae application, significantly higher than the chemical treatment, heptenophos.  相似文献
