RECENT APPEARANCE OF CYLINDROSPEMOPSIS (CYANOBACTEIUA) IN FIVE HYPEREUTROPHIC FLORIDA LAKES1

Observations of historical and recent phytoplankton samples from five hypereutrophic Florida lakes indicate that nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria in the genus Cylindrospermopsis Seenayya et Subba Raju have entered these water-bodies sometime in the last 30 years. Cylindrospermopsis forms a year-round bloom in one of the five lakes, dominates seasonally in another, and is at least at times an important component of the phytoplankton community in the remaining three. The increase in abundance of Cylindrospermopsis in Florida lakes could have implications for water management.     

EXTERNAL MORPHOLOGY AND PIGMENTATION OF THE VAQUITA, PHOCOENA SINUS (CETACEA: MAMMALIA)

The vaquita, Phocoena sinus , is a porpoise in the family Phocoenidae that lives only in the Gulf of California. The external appearance of P. sinus was unknown until 13 fresh specimens were recently examined. The most obvious morphological feature distinguishing P. sinus from its two congeners is the proportionately higher dorsal fin. The most striking features of the pigmentation pattern are the large black eye patches and the black upper and lower lip patches. In both areas, the pigmentation contrasts sharply with the surrounding light gray coloration. The total lengths of the specimens ranged from 70.3 cm (a neonate) to 143.5 cm (an adult female).     

Host plant variation in mortality of the leaf-folding sawfly on the arroyo willow

Abstract. 1. We tested the hypothesis that survival and sources of mortality of the leaf-folding sawfly ( Phyllocolpa sp.) varied significantly among host plants of the arroyo willow ( Salix lasiolepis Bent ham).
2. Survival of the leaf folder differed among field and potted willows in a common environment in two of three cases, and sources of mortality differed among plants in four of five cases.
3. Egg mortality differed among field plants but not among the potted willow plants.
4. Larval mortality and parasitism differed among field and potted willows in 2 years, and appeared to be compensatory mortality sources.
5. Leaf folder density among plants was not generally correlated with percentage of leaf folds with no egg (galls formed but no subsequent oviposition), percentage survival, or percentage mortality, indicating a general lack of density dependence.
6. The proportion of folds with no egg oviposited differed significantly among field and potted plants, and was only correlated with survival or sources of mortality in one of three years.
7. The data support the hypothesis that host plant genotype affects the interaction of the leaf folder with its natural enemies, and thus represents a three trophic level interaction.     

The Genera of the Subfamily Heteroderinae (Nematoda: Tylenchoidea) with a Description of Two New Genera

The family Heteroderidae, its two subfamilies Heteroderinae and Meloidogyninae and the nominal genera of Heteroderinae (Heterodera Schmidt, 1871; Meloidodera Chitwood, Hannon &Esser, 1956; and Cryphodera Colbran, 1966) are rediagnosed. Meloidoderita Pogosyan, 1966 is considered a genus inquirenda. Two new genera from southern California are described in the subfamily Heteroderinae. A key to the genera, illustrations and a phylogeny of the Heteroderinae are proposed.     

31P nuclear magnetic resonance study on changes in phosphocreatine and the intracellular pH in rat skeletal muscle during exercise at various inspired oxygen contents

We measured ATP, phosphocreatine (PCr), inorganic phosphate (P_i), and the intracellular pH in rat hindlimb muscles during submaximal isometric exercise with various O₂ deliveries using³¹P nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (³¹P NMR) to evaluate changes in energy metabolism in relation to O₂ availability. Delivery of O₂ to muscles was altered by controlling the fractional concentration of inspired oxygen (F _IO₂) at 0.50, 0.28, 0.21, 0.11 and 0.08 with monitoring partial pressure of oxygen and carbon dioxide, and bicarbonate at the femoral artery. The steady-state ratio of PCr : (PCr + P_i) during exercise decreased as a function ofF _IO₂ even at 0.21. Significant acidification of the intracellular pH during exercise occurred at 0.08F _IO₂. Change in the PCr : (PCr + P_i) ratio demonstrated that the oxidative capacity, i.e. the maximal rate of the oxidative phosphorylation reaction, in muscle was not limited by O₂ delivery at 0.50F _IO₂, but was significantly limited at 0.21F _IO₂ or below. Change in the intracellular pH at 0.08F _IO₂ could be interpreted as an increase in lactate, suggesting activation of glycolysis. Correlation between the PCr : (PCr + P_i) ratio and the intracellular pH revealed the existence of a critical PCr : (PCr + P_i) ratio and pH for glycolysis activation at around 0.4 and 6.7, respectively.
