Aim The question of how much of the shared geographical distribution of biota is due to environmental vs. historical constraints remains unanswered. The aim of this paper is to disentangle the contribution of historical vs. contemporary factors to the distribution of freshwater fish species. In addition, it illustrates how quantifying the contribution of each type of factor improves the classification of biogeographical provinces. Location Iberian Peninsula, south‐western Europe (c. 581,000 km2). Methods We used the most comprehensive data on native fish distributions for the Iberian Peninsula, compiled from Portuguese and Spanish sources on a 20‐km grid‐cell resolution. Overall, 58 species were analysed after being categorized into three groups according to their ability to disperse through saltwater: (1) species strictly intolerant of saltwater (primary species); (2) species partially tolerant of saltwater, making limited incursions into saltwaters (secondary species); and (3) saltwater‐tolerant species that migrate back and forth from sea to freshwaters or have invaded freshwaters recently (peripheral species). Distance‐based multivariate analyses were used to test the role of historical (basin formation) vs. contemporary environmental (climate) conditions in explaining current patterns of native fish assemblage composition. Cluster analyses were performed to explore species co‐occurrence patterns and redefine biogeographical provinces based on the distributions of fishes. Results River basin boundaries were better at segregating species composition for all species groups than contemporary climate variables. This historical signal was especially evident for primary and secondary freshwater fishes. Eleven biogeographical provinces were delineated. Basins flowing to the Atlantic Ocean north of the Tagus Basin and those flowing to the Mediterranean Sea north of the Mijares Basin were the most dissimilar group. Primary and secondary freshwater species had higher province fidelity than peripheral species. Main conclusions The results support the hypothesis that historical factors exert greater constraints on native freshwater fish assemblages in the Iberian Peninsula than do current environmental factors. After examining patterns of assemblage variation across space, as evidenced by the biogeographical provinces, we discuss the likely dispersal and speciation events that underlie these patterns.  相似文献

The phylogenetic relationships among the wall lizards of the Podarcis hispanicus complex that inhabit the south-east (SE) of the Iberian Peninsula and other lineages of the complex remain unclear. In this study, four mitochondrial and two nuclear markers were used to study genetic relationships within this complex. The phylogenetic analyses based on mtDNA gene trees constructed with ML and BI, and a species tree using *BEAST support three divergent clades in this region: the Valencia, Galera and Albacete/Murcia lineages. These three lineages were also corroborated in species delimitation analyses based on mtDNA using bPTP, mPTP, GMYC, ABGD and BAPS. Bayesian inference species delimitation method (BPP) based on both nuclear data and a combined data set (mtDNA + nuclear) showed high posterior probabilities for these three SE lineages (≥0.94) and another Bayesian analysis (STACEY) based on combined data set recovered the same three groups in this region. Divergence time dating of the species tree provided an estimated divergence of the Galera lineage from the other SE group (Podarcis vaucheri, (Albacete/Murcia, Valencia)) at 12.48 Ma. During this period, the Betic–Rifian arc was isolated, which could have caused the isolation of the Galera form distributed to the south of the Betic Corridor. Although lizards from the Albacete/Murcia and Galera lineage are morphologically similar, they clearly represent distinct genetic lineages. The noteworthy separation of the Galera lineage enables us to conclude that this lineage must be considered as a new full species.  相似文献

The growth and the reproductive tactics of gudgeon, Gobio gobio (L.) were assessed in three contrasting streams of the Iberian Peninsula: the Rivers Moros and Ucero, tributaries of the R. Duero, and the R. MatarrańGa, a tributary of the R. Ebro. The R. Duero gudgeon have spread in the last 50 years while their presence in the lower tributaries of the R. Ebro followed the construction of reservoirs in the mid 1960s. The life histories of the Moros and MatarrańnGa gudgeon are very similar; rapid growth in spring, early reproduction (1 -year-old), high reproductive cost, short life-span and trend to semelparity. Both populations are strongly influenced by the severe summer droughts that result in (I) reduction in the condition coefficient, (2) reduction in the growth rate (particularly in the River MatarrańGa), (3) single spawning and (4) no gonad development in the summer. The gudgeon in the Ucero delay maturity, grow slower, are multi-spawners and have a longer life span. All the Duero populations come from the same genetic pool and they are actually connected through the populations living along this river basin, whereas the MatarrańGa population is not genetically linked, we hypothesize that the differences between these populations are environmentally induced.  相似文献

The populations of the urodele Salamandra salamandra in the Northern Iberian Peninsula exhibit very different coloration patterns and a remarkable range in reproductive modes (from giving birth to a large number of aquatic larvae to a parturition event of just a few fully metamorphosed, i.e. terrestrial, offspring). Electrophoretic study of geographic variation in allozymes shows that this extraordinary diversity, particularly in reproductive modes, is not accompanied by a genetic differentiation of similar magnitude. All the populations sampled along a transect crossing the Northern part of the Iberian Peninsula and encompassing the various reproductive strategies, as previously described, can be ascribed to a single species, because of small interpopulational genetic distances (ranging DNei from 0.05 to 0.199) and absence of fixed (diagnostic) alleles. A variety of phenetic and cladistic methods were used to elucidate the relationship among populations, based on allozyme data. These methods defined two well corroborated clusters: the first contains populations of salamanders with a blotched dorsal coloration pattern and characterized by parturition of aquatic larvae; the second group is composed of populations exhibiting a striped dorsal coloration pattern, smaller adult body size, and giving birth to fully metamorphosed terrestrial offspring. The latter group also encompasses some populations where mixed parturition events, which include both larvae and metamorphosed offspring, which have been recorded (Dopazo and Alberch, 1994). The absence of a correlation between genetic and geographic distance suggests that the mode of differentiation of the species is based on at least two successive events of isolation, radiation, and secondary contact between populations. Furthermore, the validity of the described “subspecies” is questioned by our data, which point out the need for a detailed systematic study of Salamandra from a global perspective. “Viviparity”, here meaning giving birth to fully metamorphosed offspring, originated once and occurs as intraspecific, and even as intrapopulational variation. Thus, we confirm a system where a major evolutionary innovation -the acquisition of independence from the aquatic media in the primitive amphibian complex life cycle-, can be studied at the microevolutionary, i.e., intra- and inter-populational level.  相似文献

A new species of the section Lepidoseris (Rchb.) Benth. of the genus Crepis L. (Asteraceae) is described. The new species is restricted to a single known locality on near-vertical coastal cliffs of the Ria de Cedeira in northern Galicia (northwest Iberian Peninsula). Morphometric characters permitting discrimination from the most similar taxa are detailed, and possible phylogenetic relationships with other species of the section Lepidoseris (particularly those of the C. vesicaria complex) are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract

The Iberian Peninsula hosts six native pine species, which are distributed according to an altitudinal gradient from coastal to mountain areas, close to 1000 m a.s.l. Root hydraulic responses are the key factors of spatial segregation of trees in response to environmental factors such as temperature and water availability, and they will be a determinant of future population and species spatial dynamics in a changing climate scenario. Root hydraulic responses to soil water temperatures ranging from 30°C to 0°C were compared for young plants of these six aforementioned species. Hydraulic resistance (Rh) increased for all species in response to temperature decrease. Mountain pines showed higher Rh values than coastal pines at all temperatures, and showed a more prompt and marked hydraulic response when temperatures dropped down. Data point out that mountain pines display a clear mechanism to avoid cold embolism and secondary water stress, while coastal species have a limited responsiveness to temperature changes due to scarce hydraulic regulation. These differences in hydraulic behaviour support the spatial segregation between mountain and coastal pines in the Iberian Peninsula, and will be one of the factors at the basis of the future shifts of species and populations that will be associated to climate change.  相似文献

Aquatic and riparian ecosystems are known to be highly vulnerable to invasive alien species (IAS), especially when subjected to human-induced disturbances. In the last three decades, we have witnessed a growing increase in plant invasions in Portugal and Spain (Iberian Peninsula, south-western Europe), with very detrimental economic, social and ecological effects. Some of these species, such as the giant reed (Arundo donax L.) and the water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms-Laub.), number among the world's worst weeds. We present an appraisal of this invasive alien river flora and the most problematic aquatic weeds. We review various aspects of invasion ecology, including spatial and temporal patterns of invasion, species invasiveness, species traits of invasive weeds, and relationships between human disturbance in rivers and surrounding areas and invasibility, and contextualize them in overall state-of-the-art terms. We also acknowledge the use of IAS as bioindicators of the ecological quality of rivers, wetlands and riparian zones. Remote-sensing tools and Geographic Information Systems for detecting and monitoring IAS in Iberian rivers are presented.  相似文献

The greatest number of Batrachium plant-communities is reached in base-poor waters of SW Europe where most Batrachium species develop laminar leaves. In contrast, base-rich waters of the Western Mediterranean are characterized by few Batrachium communities and by the only one Batrachium species present in the area with only dissected leaves. This work focused initially on studying the water ecology of Iberian Batrachium communities' developing in hard waters in order to seek to what extend the water physical–chemical gradient determines the occurrence of heterophyllous or homophyllous-dissected species. Floristic data and water physical–chemical data were analyzed using multivariate and comparative methods. We found two main types of Batrachium communities: community of Ranunculus trichophyllus – homophyllous and dissected species–, and community of Ranunculus penicillatus – heterophyllous species–. Alkalinity degree is the main factor separating both communities. Our results of a tentative survey on Batrachium composition in hard waters in the Eastern Mediterranean showed a wider range of physical–chemical water features as well as a greater number of Batrachium species with only dissected leaves in comparison to Western Mediterranean. We conclude that high alkalinity is related to the occurrence of Batrachium communities characterized by species with only dissected leaves in both the western and eastern parts of Mediterranean Europe.  相似文献
