The bethylidCephalonomia stephanoderis Betrem is an ectoparasitoid that prefers to oviposit on the prepupae and pupae of the coffe berry borerHypothenemus hampei (Ferrari) (Coleoptera: Scolytidae). It has the ability to distinguish unparasitized from parasitized hosts and rarely lays more than one egg per host. The mechanism of this host discrimination byC. stephanoderis was investigated under laboratory conditions. For this, parasitoid eggs that had been deposited on host pupae were removed and pupae were then offered (individually and collectively) to individual female wasps. A total of 92% of individually offered hosts and 93% of collectively offered hosts were not parasitized. It is concluded thatC. stephanoderis recognizes a marking pheromone deposited into or onto the host, preceding, during, or after oviposition which enables female parasitoids to avoid self and conspecific superparasitism.

Soil‐dwelling ants, many of which are generalist predators, are more diverse in shaded than in sun coffee plantations without trees. We compared ant predation on the coffee berry borer, Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) in three shaded and three sun coffee plantations in Apía, Colombia, in both the wet and the dry seasons. We found that H. hampei adults exposed to ants for 5 days suffered higher removal in shaded plantations and in the wet season. In the laboratory, we observed that ants killed 74–99% of H. hampei adults over the course of 5 days. Ants appear to be important predators of H. hampei, particularly in shaded coffee plantations and in the wet season.

Coffee is a globally important crop that is subject to numerous pest problems, many of which are partially controlled by predatory ants. Yet several studies have proposed that these ecosystem services may be reduced where agricultural systems are more intensively managed. Here we investigate the predatory ability of twig-nesting ants on the main pest of coffee, the coffee berry borer (Hypothenemus hampei) under different management systems in southwest Chiapas, Mexico. We conducted both laboratory and field experiments to examine which twig-nesting ant species, if any, can prey on free-living borers or can remove borers embedded in coffee fruits and whether the effects of the twig-nesting ant community differ with habitat type. Results indicate that several species of twig-nesting ants are effective predators of both free-living borers and those embedded in coffee fruits. In the lab, Pseudomyrmex ejectus, Pseudomyrmex simplex, and Pseudomyrmex PSW-53 effectively removed free-living and embedded borers. In the field, abundance, but not diversity, of twig-nesting ant colonies was influenced by shade management techniques, with the highest colony abundance present in the sites where shade trees were recently pruned. However, borer removal rates in the field were significant only in the shadiest site, but not in more intensively managed sites. This study provides evidence that twig-nesting ants can act as predators of the coffee berry borer and that the presence of twig-nesting ants may not be strongly linked to shade management intensity, as has been suggested for other arthropod predators of the borer.

Three unsprayed coffee farms (farm 1, 2 and 3) were studied for the natural occurrence of the insect pathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana in Hypothenemus hampei populations throughout the rainy season of 2004 (July-November) and 2005 (July-December). B. bassiana infections were found during most sampling dates in both years, on all three farms. The B. bassiana infection levels were higher in 2005 than in 2004 with mean prevalence of 12.1% and 2.7%, respectively. No consistent significant differences in infection level between farms were found in any of the years. B. bassiana infection levels fluctuated widely throughout the season, and peaked at 13.5% on farm 3 in 2004 and at 44.0% on farm 1 in 2005. The H. hampei population was significantly higher in 2004 than in 2005, with 6.9% of the berries infested in 2004 and only 0.7% in 2005. In both years, the H. hampei infestation level was significantly higher on farm 2. No consistent significant differences in H. hampei infestation levels were found between sampling dates on any of the farms. H. hampei infestation levels fluctuated throughout both seasons, and peaked at 15.3% on farm 2 in 2004 and 2.2% on farm 2 in 2005. No consistent density dependent correlation between H. hampei infestation level and B. bassiana infection level was found. Correlations between climatic conditions and B. bassiana or H. hampei were not found.

Parasitism of the coffee berry borer, Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari) by Trichogramma pretiosum Riley resulted in high mortality of developing parasitoids and a low prevalence of adult emergence. A laboratory colony of T. pretiosum reproducing in H. hampei failed after three generations. Adult female T. pretiosum that developed in H. hampei were smaller and produced fewer eggs than conspecifics that developed in a standard lepidopteran host, Sitotroga cerealella (Olivier). Parasitoids that emerged from H. hampei preferentially parasitized S. cerealella over H. hampei. We conclude that T. pretiosum has little potential for biocontrol of the coffee berry borer.

Five strains of the entomopathogenic fungusMetarhizium anisopliae (Metschnikoff) Sorokin were bioassayed against the coffee berry borerHypothenemus hampei (Ferrari) (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) under laboratory conditions (T=27±2°C; R.H.=90±5% and 12∶12 L∶D light cycle). The LC50 values for the three most virulent strains, Ma4, Ma5 and Ma3, were 4.2, 5.9 and 6.7×106 conidia/ml of suspension respectively and median lethal times (LT50) observed were between 9.7 and 13.8 days. The maximum percentage sporulation was obtained with strains Ma3 and Ma4 both with 90% sporulation and Ma10 with 60.7%. These results suggest that the fungusM. anisopliae could be incorporated into an integrated control programme for the biological control ofH. hampei.

Invasive bark beetles are posing a major threat to forest resources around the world. DAISIE's web-based and printed databases of invasive species in Europe provide an incomplete and misleading picture of the alien scolytines and platypodines. We present a review of the alien bark beetle fauna of Europe based on primary literature through 2009. We find that there are 18 Scolytinae and one Platypodinae species apparently established in Europe, from 14 different genera. Seventeen species are naturalized. We argue that Trypodendron laeve, commonly considered alien in Europe, is a native species; conversely, we hypothesize that Xyleborus pfeilii, which has always been treated as indigenous, is an alien species from Asia. We also point out the possibility that the Asian larch bark beetle Ips subelongatus is established in European Russia. We show that there has been a marked acceleration in the rate of new introductions to Europe, as is also happening in North America: seven alien species were first recorded in the last decade. We present information on the biology, origins, and distributions of the alien species. All but four are polyphagous, and 11 are inbreeders: two traits which increase invasiveness. Eleven species are native to Asia, six to the Americas, and one is from the Canary Islands. The Mediterranean is especially favorable for invasives, hosting a large proportion of the aliens (9/19). Italy, France and Spain have the largest numbers of alien species (14, 10 and 7, respectively). We point out that the low numbers for at least some countries is likely due to under-reporting.Finally, we discuss the difficulties associated with identifying newly invasive species. Lack of good illustrations and keys hinder identification, particularly for species coming from Asia and Oceania.

The coffee berry borer,Hypothenemus hampei(Ferrari) (Coleoptera: Scolytidae), is the most important pest of coffee worldwide.Cephalonomia hyalinipennisAshmead (Hymenoptera: Bethylidae) was recently discovered naturally attackingH. hampeiin Mexico.C. hyalinipennisboth preys upon and parasitizesH. hampei. We report laboratory investigations on the reproductive biology ofC. hyalinipennisaimed at assessing the suitability of this parasitoid for culturing and release in biological control programs. Adult females lived up to 95 days (mean for mated females = 57 days), and risk of death increased with age. Mating status, reproductive effort, and female size influenced adult female longevity, but only weakly. The number ofH. hampeipreyed upon did not affect longevity. Rates of attack (predation plus parasitism) declined with age, but the proportion of attackedH. hampeithat were parasitized increased. Overall, about half of the attackedH. hampeiwere preyed upon and half were parasitized. Females received approximately 46 sperm per mating and 77% became sperm depleted before the end of their reproductive lives. Estimated mean lifetime fecundity was 88 eggs. Offspring survival from egg to adulthood was 60%, with batches of eggs tending to survive or die collectively; 21.2% of surviving progeny were males. These results suggest thatC. hyalinipennismay be suitable for mass rearing and release, but further work is needed to investigate interactions betweenC. hyalinipennisand other parasitoids ofH. hampei.

In line with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization Code of Conduct for the import and release of biological control agents, and taking into consideration the recommendations in the draft IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources) Guidelines for the Prevention of Biodiversity Loss Due to Biological Invasion, a procedure was developed to assess the host range of Phymastichus coffea , an endoparasitoid of coffee berry borer, Hypothenemus hampei . Host specificity was tested by exposing a Kenyan biotype of P. coffea to a selection of Scolytidae under quarantine conditions. The results demonstrated that P. coffea can be considered as oligophagous, attacking and developing on other species of the genus of the target borer. In no-choice tests, three species, H. obscurus , H. seriatus and Araptus sp. yielded parasitism. The risk of attack to potential alternative hosts if P. coffea were to be released as a potential biological control agent of coffee berry borer in Colombia is discussed. A quarantine procedure was developed for the importation of P. coffea to Colombia to deal with specific problems of hyperparasitoids and fungal contamination.
