Relatively minor annual amplitudes of change in certain major nutrients, and especially pH and water temperature were measured in the spring-fed system of Montezuma Well, Arizona during a four year study. phytoplankton diversity was low but for the most part, composition was spatially and temporally constant; total seasonal phytoplankton density was significantly correlated with regional incident light. Phytoplankton species composition changed briefly during and for a short period following the summer monsoon. Ultraplankton (<5 µm diam.) numerically comprised nearly 80% of the phytoplankton community throughout most of the year. The limited residence time of water in the Well may have provided a competitive advantage for cells with high surface area:volume ratios and correspondingly rapid division rates. Nannochloris bacillaris Naum. and Coccomyxa minor Skuja were perennial dominants. Diatom populations did not increase with annual increases in vernal solar radiation. Low pH, high dissolved CO2, and limited residence time for metabolic inhibitors are considered to be largely responsible for the reduced blue-green populations in the Well. The only flagellated photosynthetic group present in Montezuma Well was the Cryptophyta. Desmid populations were minimal, even though pH was consistently below circumneutral (6.5) and free CO2 concentrations high. The role of grazing by an amphipod, Hyalella montezuma, on annual phytoplankton abundance is examined.  相似文献

Abundances of white sucker, 100–500 mm FL, were not significantly different among the epilimnia, metalimnia and portions of the hypolimnia shallower than 20 m in each of two lakes. However, small suckers < 200 mm were captured most frequently in the epilimnion and no white suckers were captured in the deepest region, 20–38 m, of the two lakes. White suckers consumed prey from all three temperature zones in each lake. Prominent food items were Hyalella azteca and the chironomid larvae Heterotrissocladius, Djalmabatista and Procladius. Despite differences in relative densities of benthic invertebrates among thermal zones of the two lakes, suckers in neither lake foraged exclusively on prey of epilimnetic origin. Suckers captured in the metalimnia foraged on invertebrates that were common to all three thermal zones. And, only 0–4% of the suckers captured in the hypolimnia of the two lakes contained prey that were unique to the epilimnia. Suckers caught in the hypolimnia mainly consumed deep water invertebrates; 83% of the suckers foraged in the metalimnion and hypolimnion of Islets Lake and 45% foraged in the hypolimnion in Burnt Island Lake. Consequently there was little evidence of a massive inshore feeding migration followed by a post-feeding return to the hypolimnion. Northern pike and lake trout rarely fed on white suckers in these lakes and thus piscivory was an unlikely factor in the observed distribution of suckers.  相似文献

Two new species of hyalellid amphipods, Hyalella crawfordi and H. gauthieri, are described from Lake Titicaca; H. echinus (Faxon, 1876) is redescribed. The H. echinus group of species is newly proposed for these three species, and a group diagnosis is provided. A key to the three species in the group is provided Full article published online at http://www.senckenberg.de/odes/06-10.htm.  相似文献

Understanding the evolution and maintenance of female mate choice requires information on both the benefits (the sum of direct and indirect benefits) and costs of selective mating. In this study, I assessed the fitness consequences of female mate choice in a freshwater crustacean. In Hyalella amphipods, males attempt to form precopulatory pairs with females. Large males, bearing large posterior gnathopods, tend to be over-represented in precopulatory pairs. I show that females receive both direct (reduced risk of predation while paired) and indirect (sexy sons) benefits from mating with these males. Furthermore, the behavioral mechanisms used to filter male phenotypes carry no detectable energetic cost for females. Thus, females that choose males with successful phenotypes are expected to have higher Darwinian fitness than females that mate at random. This study shows that direct and indirect selection act together to favor large male size, which explains the sexual size dimorphism and size-based mating biases observed in this species.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. We investigated whether a population of the freshwater amphipod, Hyalella azteca , which consumed plants with defensive secondary compounds, reduced predation as reported for terrestrial and marine systems.
2. Field observations in Montezuma Well, U.S.A., indicated a strong association between the emergent macrophyte, Berula erecta and H . azteca . We hypothesised that this geographically isolated population of sedentary amphipods was able to consume roots of the chemically defended B . erecta as a deterrent against predation. Berula erecta is in the family Apiaceae, which commonly produce coumarins that deter herbivory in terrestrial systems.
3.  Hyalella azteca consumed roots of B . erecta at a significantly greater rate than alternative macrophyte substrata in Montezuma Well. Additionally, H . azteca moulted at a significantly higher rate when consuming B . erecta compared with a diet of periphyton.
4. Two insect predators ( Telebasis salva and Belostoma bakeri ) with different feeding strategies were used to assess the effects of a B . erecta diet on predation rates in the laboratory and in Montezuma Well. Hyalella azteca was preyed on at a significantly lower rate by both predators when given a strict diet of B . erecta roots compared with a diet of periphyton.
5. This is the first experimental evidence that predation on a freshwater herbivore, H . azteca , was reduced when it consumed a chemically defended plant.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to evaluate alterations in the reproduction induced by acanthellae and cystacanths of the acanthocephalans Acanthocephalus tumescens and Corynosoma sp. in the amphipod Hyalella patagonica from Lake Mascardi. Specimens of H. patagonica were separated in two categories: paired amphipods (joined specimens during precopulatory mate guarding period until fertilization) and unpaired amphipods (alone specimens). Different analyses were performed: first with paired (n = 406) and unpaired (n = 375) amphipods, and second only with female amphipods (n = 1949), that were classified into three categories (without internal oocytes and eggs, only with internal oocytes, and with eggs). Also, carotenoid extraction was performed of amphipods uninfected (n = 75) and infected (n = 105) by cystacanths of Corynosoma sp. Unpaired amphipods had significantly higher prevalence of cystacanths of both acanthocephalan species than paired ones; but such differences were not found in prevalence of acanthellae. Female amphipods without internal oocytes and eggs showed significantly higher prevalence of cystacanths of both acanthocephalan species than the two other female categories; while females with eggs had significantly higher prevalence of A. tumescens acanthellae. Amphipods infected by Corynosoma sp. showed lower carotenoid concentration than uninfected ones. In Lake Mascardi, there is indirect evidence of both reduced mating success and female fecundity of H. patagonica provoked by both cystacanths species (A. tumescens and Corynosoma sp.). However, infections by acanthellae seem to have no effects.  相似文献

Aquatic ecosystems depend on terrestrial organic matter (tOM) to regulate many functions, such as food web production and water quality, but an increasing frequency and intensity of drought across northern ecosystems is threatening to disrupt this important connection. Dry conditions reduce tOM export and can also oxidize wetland soils and release stored contaminants into stream flow after rainfall. Here, we test whether these disruptions to terrestrial–aquatic linkages occur during mild summer drought and whether this affects biota across 43 littoral zone sites in 11 lakes. We use copper (Cu) and nickel (Ni) as representative contaminants, and measure abundances of Hyalella azteca, a widespread indicator of ecosystem condition and food web production. We found that tOM concentrations were reduced but correlations with organic soils (wetlands and riparian forests) persisted during mild drought and were sufficient to suppress labile Cu concentrations. Wetlands, however, also became a source of labile Ni to littoral zones, which was linked to reduced abundances of the amphipod H. azteca, on average by up to 70 times across the range of observed Ni concentrations. This reveals a duality in the functional linkage of organic soils to aquatic ecosystems whereby they can help buffer the effects of hydrologic disconnection between catchments and lakes but at the cost of biogeochemical changes that release stored contaminants. As evidence of the toxicity of trace contaminant concentrations and their global dispersion grows, sustaining links among forests, organic soils and aquatic ecosystems in a changing climate will become increasingly important.  相似文献

Do xeric landscapes increase genetic divergence in aquatic ecosystems?   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
1. Previous investigations of the ecological genetics among amphipods in south-western U.S.A. suggested a xeric landscape promoted genetic divergence among passively dispersed freshwater invertebrates, thereby enhancing speciation events. We predicted that less divergence would occur among amphipod populations across similar geographic distances in mesic regions. 2. Eight Hyalella azteca populations were sampled along a 200-km transect in western Oregon, U.S.A. Genetic distances among populations were estimated from randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD). Genetic analyses indicated much less divergence among Oregon populations than among Arizona populations in an arid environment. 3. Behavioural observations support the genetic data: Oregon populations exhibit little differentiation in swimming behaviour, whereas Hyalella populations in Arizona exhibit extremes in swimming behaviour. 4. These results provide preliminary support for the hypothesis that a xeric landscape promotes genetic and behavioural divergence among amphipods. Many aquatic invertebrates classified as panmictic populations may encompass genetically distinct groups; those isolated by a xeric landscape are especially prone to diversification.  相似文献

1. Cryptic species diversity poses evolutionary questions about its origin and maintenance, and ecological questions about the coexistence of seemingly identical species. 2. We examine patterns of morphological and life history differentiation in three sympatric cryptic species of freshwater amphipods within the Hyalella azteca species complex. These species are separated by extensive molecular evolution, but appear similar in phenotype. Species were collected from the littoral zone of a small kettle lake in Michigan, U.S.A., and identified to species by molecular genetic methods. 3. Two of the species were similar, differing only in female size, whereas the third was larger in body size and had larger clutches of smaller eggs than the other two. There were differences between the species also in pleon spine length and antennal segment number. 4. An analysis of allozyme variation among the cryptic species in three lakes suggests that the species are reproductively isolated within lakes. 5. We suggest that phenotypic similarity of these species is maintained by size‐selective predation by fish. The small, but statistically significant, differences in body size may form the axis for a tradeoff between resource exploitation and predator avoidance, a condition that can foster coexistence of phenotypically similar species.  相似文献

DNA barcoding has revealed unrecognized species in several animal groups. In this study we have employed DNA barcoding to examine Hyalella, a taxonomically difficult genus of amphipod crustaceans, from sites in the southern Great Basin of California and Nevada, USA. We assessed the extent of species diversity using a species screening threshold (SST) set at 10 times the average intrapopulation cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) haplotype divergence. Despite the fact that this threshold approach is more conservative in delineating provisional species than the phylogenetic species concept, our analyses revealed extraordinary levels of cryptic diversity and endemism. The SST discriminated two provisional species within Hyalella sandra, and 33 provisional species within Hyalella azteca. COI nucleotide divergences among these provisional species ranged from 4.4% to 29.9%. These results have important implications for the conservation of life in desert springs - habitats that are threatened as a result of groundwater over-exploitation.  相似文献
