Population declines of disturbance-dependent species due to suppression of natural disturbances are realized across ecosystems. The piping plover (Charadrius melodus; plover), a disturbance-dependent and conservation-reliant shorebird that nests on sandy beaches and barrier islands on the Atlantic Coast, was listed under the United States Endangered Species Act in 1986. In 2012, Hurricane Sandy landed on Fire and Westhampton islands, barrier island nesting sites for plovers in New York, USA. Hurricane Sandy was a natural disturbance in this system, creating abundant nesting habitat. The number of chicks produced by a pair, or a population, is a direct measure of reproductive output, and gaining a better understanding of productivity and chick behavior following large-scale habitat creation may improve plover habitat management and potentially species persistence. We evaluated the effects of landscape features on habitat selection, behavior, and survival of plover broods using logistic regression, generalized linear mixed effects models, and survival models. Plover broods selected flatter sites with less dense vegetation than available at random. Chick foraging rates were highest in moist substrates and were lower in areas of higher nesting plover density. Chick survival was greater for broods that hatched earlier in the breeding season and increased as chicks aged. Generally, providing access to sites with flatter, moist substrates will likely result in higher quality brood rearing habitat on the landscape. Ultimately, vegetation removal and habitat management may be needed to reduce plover nesting density and ensure sufficient habitat, which may in turn improve plover chick survival. Moreover, sustaining natural landscape disturbances such as those resulting from storms, and not taking actions to prevent hurricane-created overwash, will allow these landscape features to persist.  相似文献

We investigated which of the following environmental factors: the number of years since the windthrow of the tree (the age of dead wood), the phytocenosis (the type of forest community), altitude, exposure, wood hardness and the spatial scale of forest disturbances (small gaps with a few fallen spruces vs large-area windthrows) contributed to the diversity and abundance of lichens inhabiting the exposed wood of windthrown spruce trees in Polish Western Carpathian forests. Both Shannon H index and sum of coverage coefficients rose with increasing age of the wood, levelling off after 11–14 y (diversity) and 14–17 y (abundance). This factor appeared to be the most important for this group of lichens, but the significant positive impact of large-area windthrows on the lichen abundance was also demonstrated by using a GLM model. The age of the wood we precisely determined on the basis of data on Norway spruce mortality collected annually in permanent plots of the Gorce National Park since 2000. Using the Shore durometer we linked the course of the wood-inhabiting lichen succession with wood decay more precisely than before. The largest number of species was associated with medium hard wood, i.e., 51 < x ≤ 80 on the Shore scale. Based on the NMDS analysis, we distinguished four age groups of logs, differing in lichen abundance and defined by the dominance of distinctive species. A large number of usually corticolous lichen species used the wood of windthrown spruce logs as an optional habitat to survive large-scale, post-hurricane forest disturbances.  相似文献

The magnitude of natural disturbances by treefalls and their spatial occurrence were studied in a pine-oak forest of Sierra de La Laguna, located at the southern part of the Peninsula of Baja California in Mexico.Twenty transects covering 4 ha, perpendicular to north- and south-facing slopes were sampled. The percentages of rocky outcrops, slope, orientation, and gap size created by treefalls were recorded. The mode of tree death, treefall direction, trunk length, and basal diameter were also measured. Data were analyzed using principal component analysis, one-way ANOVA, multiple comparison tests by contrasts, and chi-square independence tests.Results suggest that exogenous disturbances have an important effect in this community. A mean number of 80 gaps per ha was recorded comprising 18.1% of the observed area. Gap sizes were fitted to a lognormal distribution as 2.3±1.4 and patches were found to be created by single treefalls. Analysis of dead material shows that there are significant differences between numbers of fallen trees on N vs S facing slopes, and that forms of dead trees are significantly associated with species. Snapped trees represent 39.5% of treefalls, dead standing trees 26.4%, uprooted trees 20.5% and cut-down trees 0.9%. The frequency of occurrence of various forms of the dead trees suggests that the cause of mortality is primarily due to the high incidence of tropical hurricanes, and secondly to the combined effect of wind and natural fire which occurs during the rainy summer season.  相似文献

Studies on the lizard, Anolis sagrei, revealed that after Hurricane Floyd devastated the Bahamas in 1999, some populations consisted only of hatchlings. Because the storm surge of the hurricane completely inundated these islands, apparently for up to 6 h, survival of anole eggs in salt water for such periods is implied. To test this hypothesis directly, we placed A. sagrei eggs in saltwater for 3 or 6 h with unimmersed eggs serving as the control. Hatching success and incubation time did not differ among the three treatments. These findings help explain the persistence of anole populations on small islands vulnerable to hurricanes.  相似文献

Aims: Large hurricanes have profound impacts on temperate forests,but owing to their infrequent nature these effects have rarelybeen examined in detail. In 1996, Hurricane Fran significantlydamaged many long-term tree census plots in the Duke Foreston the North Carolina Piedmont, thereby providing an exceptionalopportunity to examine pre- and post-hurricane forest compositionaltrajectories. Our goal was to examine immediate, short-term(0–4 years) and longer term (5 year) hurricane-inducedstructural, spatial and compositional changes in the tree population(stem d.b.h > 1 cm) in the context of our detailed, long-termknowledge of the dynamics of these forests. Methods: We surveyed stem damage and tree mortality in 34 long-term permanentplots (ca. 70-year record; 404–1 012 m2) and 7 large mappedtree stands (ca. 20-year record; 5 250–65 000 m2) representingboth transition-phase, even-aged pine stands and uneven-agedupland hardwood forests. We employed three types of damage measuresto quantify stand-level damage severity: percentage of stemsdamaged, percentage of basal area lost and a ‘stand-leveldamage index’. Second-order spatial analysis (Ripley'sK-function) was used to investigate patterns in tree mortality. Important findings: Our study found hurricane effects on the structural attributesof Piedmont forests to be variable and patchy. Changes in treespecies composition, however, were modest. Uprooting was themajor damage type for the overstory trees [diameter at breastheight (d.b.h.) >10 cm] apparently due to the exposure ofthe crowns to high wind combined with heavy rainfall prior toand during the storm. Saplings, juvenile trees and small trees(1–10 cm d.b.h.) of the understory and midstory were mainlydamaged by being pinned or bent by their damaged large neighbors.Hurricane-induced tree mortality varied weakly among species,was positively correlated with pre-hurricane tree size and remainedup to 2-fold higher than pre-hurricane background mortality5 years after the hurricane. Spatial point pattern analysisrevealed a patchy distribution of tree mortality during thehurricane sampling interval. Hurricane Fran resulted in a dramaticincrease in average gap size from ca. 400 m2 pre-hurricane toca 1100 m2 after the hurricane, whereas maximum gap sizes reached18–34 times larger than the pre-hurricane levels.  相似文献

The aftermath of Hurricane Katrina drew attention to commonplace landscape markers that create for a community a sense of place— that connection between people and places crucial to a sense of corporate and individual identity and heritage. There is a legal context for sense of place within extant federal preservation legislation. Nevertheless, many such markers with special meanings for residents have been overlooked in federal documentation, the cornerstone of which is the National Register of Historic Places. Grassroots efforts and national media coverage have helped forge a niche for sense of place within the recovery plans and policy emerging in the affected region. However, it is unclear whether this will carry over into practice. In terms of long-term policy shifts, remedying the shortcomings highlighted by Katrina may require changes to the National Historic Preservation Act and its associated guidelines and regulations, or it may entail a new approach altogether.  相似文献

Woody debris is abundant in hurricane‐impacted forests. With a major hurricane affecting South Florida mangroves approximately every 20 yr, carbon storage and nutrient retention may be influenced greatly by woody debris dynamics. In addition, woody debris can influence seedling regeneration in mangrove swamps by trapping propagules and enhancing seedling growth potential. Here, we report on line‐intercept woody debris surveys conducted in mangrove wetlands of South Florida 9–10 yr after the passage of Hurricane Andrew. The total volume of woody debris for all sites combined was estimated at 67 m3/ha and varied from 13 to 181 m3/ha depending upon differences in forest height, proximity to the storm, and maximum estimated wind velocities. Large volumes of woody debris were found in the eyewall region of the hurricane, with a volume of 132 m3/ha and a projected woody debris biomass of approximately 36 t/ha. Approximately half of the woody debris biomass averaged across all sites was associated as small twigs and branches (fine woody debris), since coarse woody debris >7.5 cm felled during Hurricane Andrew was fairly well decomposed. Much of the small debris is likely to be associated with post‐hurricane forest dynamics. Hurricanes are responsible for large amounts of damage to mangrove ecosystems, and components of associated downed wood may provide a relative index of disturbance for mangrove forests. Here, we suggest that a fine:coarse woody debris ratio ≤0.5 is suggestive of a recent disturbance in mangrove wetlands, although additional research is needed to corroborate such findings.  相似文献

The harmful dinoflagellate Cochlodinium polykrikoides is known to cause fish death by gill-clogging when its abundance exceeds approximately 1000 cells ml−1. Thus, red tides of this dinoflagellate have caused considerable loss in the aquaculture industry worldwide. Typhoons carrying strong winds and heavy rains may alter the process of red tide events. To investigate the effects of typhoons on C. polykrikoides red tides, daily variations in the abundance of C. polykrikoides, and wind speeds in three study areas in the South Sea of Korea were analyzed during the periods of C. polykrikoides red tides and the passage of 14 typhoons during 2012–2014. The typhoons differentially affected Cochlodinium red tides during the study period, and the daily maximum wind speed generated by the typhoon was critical. Four typhoons with daily maximum wind speeds of >14 m s−1 eliminated Cochlodinium red tides, while three typhoons with daily maximum wind speed of 5–14 m s−1 only lowered the abundance. However, other typhoons with daily maximum wind speeds of <5 m s−1 had no marked effect on the Cochlodinium abundance. Therefore, typhoons may sometimes eliminate C. polykrikoides red tide events, or reduce cell abundances to a level that is not harmful to caged fish cultivated in aquaculture industries. Thus, typhoons should be considered when compiling red tide dynamics and fish-kill models.  相似文献
