Bioturbation by benthic infauna has important implications for the fate of contaminants as well as for changes to the sediment structure, chemistry and transport characteristics. There is an extensive literature dealing with the influence of sedimentary variables on the structure and function of infaunal marine and estuarine organisms but less is known of the converse, the influence of biota on sedimentary structure. Although some work has been carried out regarding spatial and temporal patterns of bioturbation, little attention has been given to the effects of pollution. The paper gives a framework of animal sediment relationships in an intertidal environment and discusses the general role of macrofauna in structuring and modifying sedimentary features. A brief outline of the various techniques used for quantifying the degree of bioturbation is given and some of these techniques have then been used to demonstrate the effect of a petrochemical discharge on the bioturbation potential of intertidal communities in the Humber estuary, eastern England. These studies indicate an increase in bioturbation with increasing distance from the source of pollution, not only because of differences in abundance, animal size and depth of activity but also because of the difference in species composition between the communities. As a means of interpreting the responses, the species present have been broadly classified in terms of their feeding strategy and sediment modification potential. The paper concludes by discussing the potential impact, in terms of effect on sediment transport, of selectively removing the different guilds (by pollution). The paper describes the local, national, European and wider-area framework, statutes, and formal and voluntary mechanisms for managing European estuaries. These aspects are discussed in relation to two large and representative estuarine systems, the Tagus, Portugal, and the Humber, on the English North Sea coast As estuaries are sites of many activities and uses, most of which are encouraged or at least condoned, management has the role of preventing and resolving conflicts between those uses and users. Accepted uses of estuaries include the discharge and dumping of waste materials, fin and shell-fisheries, conservation, land reclamation, natural usage, abstraction by industry, and recreation. Estuarine management is now being carried out within the constraints of local and regional government planning, planning and activities of water pollution control bodies, fisheries control bodies, and navigation and port authorities The Tagus and Humber estuaries support all of the above activities and uses, and have controls within a European legislative framework but have differing histories of management and planning in order to resolve conflicts. In addition the Humber is subject to controls placed on North Sea areas. The paper discusses the relevant national and European legislation (Directives) and accepted practices for management. Furthermore, the paper discusses the formulation and practice of estuarine management plans as used by various bodies (nature conservation, water quality and regional authority). It is of particular note that the lessons from these two estuaries are relevant to many other European estuaries.  相似文献

The catchment of the Humber Estuary drains approximately 20% of the land area of England via two main rivers, the Trent and the Ouse, and a number of tributaries. The catchment is home to major metropolitan and industrial centres, as well as to extensive areas of agricultural land; for this reason, the river and estuarine systems have been subject to considerable anthropogenic inputs. The Humber Estuary is one of the largest U.K. estuaries and the major U.K. freshwater input to the North Sea. The U.K. Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) Land Ocean Interaction Study (LOIS), which combined extensive physical and biogeochemical measurements with an integrated modelling programme, was established to examine the transport and fate of nutrients and other constituents through the land-sea boundary. In this paper, a model of nitrogen (nitrate, nitrite, ammonium, particulate nitrogen) transport and cycling in the Humber Estuary, calibrated on the basis of measured constituent concentrations at its riverine and marine boundaries, is linked off-line to a Humber catchment and rivers model of nitrogen transport, which furnished simulated constituent values at the tidal limits, and the resulting estuarine nitrogen profiles compared to those of the standalone estuarine model. The estuarine model is then re-run using simulated concentration values at the tidal limits from catchment-river model simulations incorporating realistic changes in agricultural fertiliser inputs and climate forcing functions. The standalone estuarine model simulation estimated nitrate+nitrite (total nitrogen) export to the North Sea to be ca. 53000 t in 1994 and 44000 t in 1995. Following linkage of the estuarine and catchment-river models, the estimated fluxes for these years increased by 20–30%, {relative to the standalone simulation}. Higher {winter} riverine flows largely accounted for this difference. The altered flows also markedly changed the simulated concentrations and distributions of suspended particulate matter (SPM) within the estuary, indicating strongly that the transport and fluxes of particle-reactive and particle-associated constituents would show measurable differences. Scatter in the measured SPM data precluded identification of the more precise simulation run, however. Subsequent simulations using the linked models estimated that a 50% reduction in artificial fertiliser applications within the catchment gave a 10–15% decrease in nitrogen loads to the North Sea, relative to the 1994–95 input, whilst forcing the catchment model with a climate perhaps appropriate for the mid-21st century yielded nitrogen fluxes that were similar to those of the mid-1990s.  相似文献

This paper describes the novel application of high resolution micro computer tomography (microCT) to the quantification of the properties of marine biogenic structures. CT scanning has been used to examine sediments in the past but the resolution of most previous techniques has been dependent upon commercial medical CT scanners which only have a slice thickness of ≥ 0.625 mm. In addition adequate software has not previously been available to rapidly quantify all the properties of biogenic structures. The microCT technique developed here used a standard core sample of estuarine sediment and new software was developed to calculate the axial variation of the following burrow parameters: number, diameter, volume, surface area and density. The increased resolution has resulted in the first quantification of meiofaunal burrow structures.A test core has shown, as an example, that the total volume of burrows created by macrofaunal organisms decreased from 827 mm3, within the top 15 mm of the core, to 204.2 mm3 at a depth 60 -75 mm within the core. Total burrow surface area decreased from 1883 mm2 to 512 mm2, for these depth ranges, respectively and burrow diameter ranged from 2.37-2.58 mm, remaining fairly constant between depths. Meiofaunal burrow structures decreased from 1.3-0.1 mm3 within the top 6 mm of the core with burrow surface area decreasing from 33.52-3.4 mm2. Again, burrow diameter remained relatively constant, ranging from 0.23-0.25 mm.Quantification to this resolution is required to identify the impact of infaunal organisms on factors such as oxygen penetration, vertical and horizontal (across burrow walls) gradients in redox conditions and chemical/nutrient speciation and flux. The quantification of these burrow properties will improve the ability to examine the interrelationships between chemical, physical and biological processes and their role in ecological functioning. The present study indicates that there is potential for further development of this software to allow more detailed analysis of burrow structures and surface features including parameters such as burrow length, shape and sediment surface roughness.  相似文献

Concentrations of seven heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Ni, Cr, Nb, Pb, As) in sediments of the Humber estuary and its tributary rivers have been examined using a variety of statistical methods. Concentrations of metals are rather uniform once the effect of grain size is adjusted for. This uniformity extends for some distance beyond the turbidity maximum, and in fact well beyond the normal limit of salt penetration. Detailed statistical analysis of the data do however reveal some trend of concentrations with position in the estuary, with concentrations of Zn, Ni, and Pb being slightly lower towards the mouth of the estuary. Nb concentrations are higher near the mouth of the Humber, but this reflects the location of two large discharges of Nb here. Once these anomalous samples are removed, Nb concentrations are also shown to be spatially homogeneous. The spatial trends in Zn, Ni and Pb may be due to inputs of very contaminated particulate matter to the upper estuary, to inward transport of uncontaminated clay particles from the North Sea to the lower estuary or to the exchange of metals between particulate matter and water. There are however also spatial trends in sediment particle diameter, so some caution needs to be exercised in drawing conclusions.  相似文献

By ‘working with the willing’, the National Industrial Symbiosis Programme (NISP) has successfully facilitated industrial symbiosis throughout the United Kingdom and, in the process, delivered significant economic and environmental benefits for both Programme members and the country as a whole. One of the keys to NISP's success is that, unlike failed attempts to plan and construct eco‐industrial systems from scratch, the Programme works largely with existing companies who have already settled in, developed, and successfully operate within a given locale. This article argues that existing and mature industrial systems provide the best prospects for identifying opportunities for, and ultimately facilitating, industrial symbiosis. Due to levels of diversification and operational fundamental niches that, in the fullness of time, develop within all industrial systems, industrially mature areas are deemed to be industrial symbiosis ‘conducive environments’. Building on the conservation biology concept of a habitat suitability index, the article presents a methodology for comparing a potential site for eco‐industrial development to a known baseline industrial ‘habitat’ already identified as being highly conducive to industrial symbiosis. The suitability index methodology is further developed and applied to a multi‐criteria evaluation geographic information system to produce a ‘habitat’ suitability map that allows practitioners to quickly identify potential industrial symbiosis hotspots (the methodology is illustrated for England). The article concludes by providing options for the development of symbiosis suitability indices and how they can be used to support the facilitation of industrial symbiosis and regional resource efficiency.  相似文献
