This paper examines the pattern(s) of sexual dimorphism within the upper dentition ofProconsul specimens from the early Miocene of east Africa. These fossils are compared against the corresponding dentition ofPan troglodytes andGorilla gorilla using principal components and cluster analyses. This paper demonstrates that both sexes ofPan andGorilla are characterized by their own distinctive shape patterns. It is also demonstrated that someProconsul specimens examined here display a pattern that is dissimilar from otherProconsul specimens also examined. This suggests that at least two species ofProconsul may have to be recognized as having lived in this region during the early Miocene. The identification of distinct patterns withinProconsul also suggests that their overall shape and size range are more similar toPan than toGorilla.  相似文献

Asterionic sutural patterns in Plio-Pleistocene hominid crania have never been examined in detail. We present an analysis of this anatomical region in Australopithecus and Homo and relate different sutural patterns to functional changes in the masticatory apparatus. The great apes and A. afarensis share the common adult higher primate sutural pattern referred to as the "asterionic notch," which develops in response to the hypertrophy of posterior temporalis muscle fibers and the consequent formation of compound temporal/nuchal crests. This sutural configuration also appears to be present on the early Homo cranium KNM-ER 1805. In contrast, adult male A. boisei crania exhibit a unique pattern where the temporal squama overlaps the parietal which, in turn, overlaps the par mastoidea and the upper scale of the occipital bone. We relate this arrangement to the need to reinforce the rear of a thin-walled braincase against the net tensile forces exerted by the temporalis and nuchal muscles. The common juvenile hominoid edge-to-edge asterionic articulation is maintained in adult A. africanus, A. robustus, female A. boisei, and most Homo crania. We discuss the latter pattern in regard to anterior temporalis hypertrophy in A. africanus, A. robustus, and A. boisei and to craniofacial paedomorphosis in Homo.  相似文献

In most primate groups emigration of the maturing young of one or the other sex tends to serve as an incest avoidance mechanism. Among most primate species it is the males who change groups. This supports the theory that, in terms of reproductive success, males should compete for mates and females should compete for resources. In hominoids the combination of increased longevity and greater female discrimination in mate selection seems responsible for female emigration. This may relate to the high frequency of patrilocality and male control of resources among human groups.  相似文献

Micropithecus clarki, from Miocene sediments of Napak, Uganda, is the smallest known hominoid primate, living or fossil. In facial morphology it is very similar to extant gibbons. Dentally, it is most similar to the small apes from the Miocene of Kenya, Dendropithecus and Limnopithecus. All of the apes from the early Miocene of East Africa seem to represent a single phyletic group that could be easily derived from the Oligocene apes known from the Fayum of Egypt. Pliopithecus from the Miocene of Europe is more closely allied with the Oligocene radiation than with the later East African radiation.  相似文献

It is widely held that many differences among primate species in scapular morphology can be functionally related to differing demands on the shoulder associated with particular locomotor habits. This perspective is largely based on broad scale studies, while more narrow comparisons of scapular form often fail to follow predictions based on inferred differences in shoulder function. For example, the ratio of supraspinous fossa/infraspinous fossa size in apes is commonly viewed as an indicator of the importance of overhead use of the forelimb, yet paradoxically, the African apes, the most terrestrial of the great apes, have higher scapular fossa ratios than the more suspensory orangutan. The recent discovery of several nearly complete early hominin scapular specimens, and their apparent morphological affinities to scapulae of orangutans and gorillas rather than chimpanzees, has led to renewed interest in the comparative analysis of human and extant ape scapular form. To facilitate the functional interpretation of differences in ape scapulae, particularly in regard to relative scapular fossa size, we used electromyography (EMG) to document the activity patterns in all four rotator cuff muscles in orangutans and gibbons, comparing the results with previously published data for chimpanzees.  相似文献

Human handedness is thought to be unique and universal. Critical examination of primary sources challenges both of these conclusions. Data on laterality of function in apes, humankind’s closest living relations, indicates hand preference and task specialization, but not yet handedness, as crucial studies remain to be done. Ethnographic data across cultures reveal more variance than is usually acknowledged, but existing findings are based on minimal and limited data. Ethological studies of spontaneous behavior in every day life are needed for both human and non-human primates.  相似文献

The early Vallesian site of Can Llobateres 1 (Vallès-Penedès Basin, Catalonia, Spain) is one of the richest localities of the European Late Miocene, having yielded the most complete remains of the fossil great ape Hispanopithecus laietanus (Primates: Hominidae). Fossil plant remains had been previously reported from this site but mostly remained unpublished. Here we describe an assemblage of plant megaremains recovered in 2010, which provides valuable paleoenvironmental data. This assemblage consists of a mixture of parautochthonous and allochthonous detached organs (leaves, stems, reproductive structures) deposited in marshy areas. The source vegetation mainly consisted of abundant reeds, palms, evergreen laurels and figs that probably grew in or near the marsh boundaries or nearby riparian forests. This environmental picture is consistent with the mammalian fauna, which shows the prevalence of humid forested environments, although somewhat more open woodlands might have been present away from the wet areas. The occurrence of mega-mesothermal taxa, together with the absence of deciduous elements, is consistent with a subtropical to warm-temperate climate. Within this mosaic environment, H. laietanus would have preferred the more humid and forested habitats, which probably were still quite common in the Vallès-Penedès during the early Vallesian. Such habitats would have provided a continuous ripe fruit supply throughout the year to these frugivorous great apes. Paleobotanical data from older sites of the same area and nearby basins show that the zonal vegetation was a warm-temperate mixed forest defined by evergreen laurels, together with leguminous trees and shrubs as well as a significant proportion of deciduous elements. Tropical and subtropical taxa would have been restricted to humid areas in the lowlands. From the late Vallesian onwards, many of these taxa disappeared from the Vallès-Penedès, whereas deciduous trees became dominant in the forested areas and wetlands, thus likely having driven Hispanopithecus to extinction in the study area.  相似文献

During the 1998–2003 field seasons of the Uganda Palaeontology Expedition, dental remains of three catarrhine species were recovered from Moroto II, Uganda. Micromammals from the locality indicate a late Early Miocene to basal Middle Miocene (ca 17.5–17 Ma) age, younger than Rusinga (17.8 Ma), but similar in age to Buluk (17.2 Ma) and Kalodirr (17.2 Ma). This paper describes and interprets new catarrhines from the site, one of which is a victoriapithecid monkey, the second a new genus and species of small-bodied ape, and the third a large hominoid. A fossil flora was collected in situ from early Miocene deposits at site R117 in the Hiwegi Formation of Rusinga Island contemporaneous with and in close proximity to the sites from where the anthropoid primates were recovered. The flora exhibits a spatially and temporally patchy distribution of fruits and seeds, mixed with twigs of various sizes, fragments of wood, bark, and leaves, all with random orientations and very low depositional dips. There has been minimal transport and the flora evidently accumulated as in situ litter beneath local vegetation. Based on Nearest Living Relatives (NLR) of fruits and seeds, the vegetation represented is a deciduous broad-leaved woodland with continuous canopy, with trees, shrubs, lianas, and climbers, reminiscent of the structure of the modern vegetation in the steep-sided protected valleys in the Laetoli-Endulen area. The interpretation of the vegetation is supported by the presence of twigs, wood, and bark fragments from larger diameter axes. Climbers are represented by twining stem fragments as well as by a wide variety of distinctive fruits and seeds. The proportion of fossilised thorny twigs represents only 3% of the twig collections, and there are no unequivocal forest trees amongst the NLR. No grasses were present; monocotyledons are only represented by a single date palm stone. No conifer seeds or cones have been recovered, and there are no coniferous leafy shoots.  相似文献

The paleobiogeography of hominoids exhibits a puzzling pattern of migrations between and within Africa and Eurasia. A precise dating of hominoid-bearing localities is therefore essential to reveal the timing, direction and possible causes of dispersals. Here, we present a bio-magnetostratigraphic analysis of the section of Engelswies (Southern Germany, Upper Freshwater Molasse, North Alpine Foreland Basin) where the oldest Eurasian hominoid was found. Our paleomagnetic results reveal a very short normal and a reverse magnetic polarity for the entire section. The polarity record is correlated to the Astronomical Tuned Neogene Time Scale using an integrated stratigraphic approach. This approach follows the chronostratigraphic framework for the Upper Freshwater Molasse, which combines magnetostratigraphy with biostratigraphic, lithostratigraphic and 40Ar/39Ar dating results. According to this outcome, the reverse polarity of the Engelswies section most likely correlates to magnetochron C5Cr. The origin of the short normal polarity remains enigmatic. The magnetostratigraphic calibration and the evolutionary level of the Engelswies small mammal fauna suggest an age of 17.1-17.0 Ma (Early Karpatian, Early Miocene) for the oldest Eurasian hominoid, and roughly confirm the estimates of Heizmann and Begun (2001). The estimated age suggests that the first hominoids in Eurasia are contemporaneous with Afro-Arabian afropithecins, and dispersal may have been facilitated by intra-Burdigalian (∼18-17 Ma) sea-level low stands and the beginning of the Miocene Climate Optimum. The paleoclimatic and environmental reconstruction of the Engelswies locality indicates a lakeshore environment near dense subtropical rain forest vegetation, where paratropical temperatures (mean annual temperature around 20 °C) and humid conditions (mean annual precipitation > 1.100 mm) prevailed.  相似文献
