Wear patterns were examined on dental casts of 202 living Lengua Indians from the Chaco area of Paraguay. Consideration was given to the development of the molar helicoidal plane, age-related changes in occlusal attrition, coalescence of dentine exposures, interproximal attrition, and erupted crown height. This study lends support to Osborn's theory of the helicoidal plane development by showing that attrition enhances rather than modifies posteruption molar occlusal planes. The rate of interproximal attrition was found to slow down with the eruption and functional initiation of the third molars. Sinuous and cavo-convex interproximal contact areas that are generated with age, however, appeared to be less abrasion resistant than straight surfaces, hence leading to an increase in interproximal attrition rates with advanced age. Maximum crown height reduction occurred between the ages of 20 and 40 years in central incisors, canines, and first molars. Kruskal-Wallis tests and log linera models failed to demonstrate significant sexually dimorphic or antimeric differences in wear patterns of Lengua teeth.  相似文献

The D.M. Raup & A. Michelson model of assessing shell-coiling constitutes a method which simplifies the measuring of spiral-coiling gastropod shells. With, this method the information is obtained by measuring the photograph of the object.The newly developed method has the advantage of dispensing with an exact shell orientation (horizontally located axis) and magnification.Instead of photographing the object with a camera the shell is placed upon photographic paper and in this manner a contact showing the shell outlines can be achieved by exposing and developing the print. Correct information is then obtained by means of the conversion factors (1–3) as outlined in this paper.  相似文献

Protuberances on the cocoon surface of the leech, Theromyzon tessulatum, are roughly parallel rows of triangular prisms arranged equidistantly to each other on the outer surface of the cocoon membrane. The distance between neighboring protuberances is approximately 1.6 microm, the height approximately 0.5 microm and the semi-width approximately 0.3 microm. The fibrillar arrangement within the protuberance maintains some elements of the helicoids found within the cocoon membrane but a high proportion of large holes disrupt the symmetry of the protuberance ultrastructure. A procedure for 3D reconstruction of the protuberance using the complementarity between the paratangential and normal sections through the cocoon is presented. Our results demonstrate that the ultrastructure of protuberances show elements of a twisted fibrillar arrangement, but the demands of filling a narrow space ruled by acute angles appears to cause a high degree of ultrastructural disorganization.  相似文献

Modes of branching of appressoria on conidial germ tubes of 36 Erysiphe spp. were studied. Only unlobed appressoria, termed alobatus pattern, were seen in E. lonicerae, E. magnifica and E. symphoricarpi. Viewed from above with light or scanning electron microscopes, other species had ± irregular lobing, but from below in the plane of contact with the substrate successive dichotomous branchings at 120° were seen to produce a five-lobed appressorium within 6 h. Each division produced a temporarily dormant outward-facing lobe and an inward limb that continued growth and division to form the axis of curved, hooked, single- or double-headed symmetrical or asymmetrical structures in a helicoid cyme-like pattern. Outlines of extracellular material after removal of germinated conidia confirmed this manner of branching. After 36 h some lobes re-divided forming botryose or jigsaw patterns even extending with extra appressoria to form candelabra-like structures. Conidia developed only one true germ tube; rarely secondary unswollen tubes emerged from spare shoulders or ends. The same true germ tubes developed initially on host surfaces, where secondary tubes and/or extensions from appressorial lobes grew into colony-forming hyphae. Lobed appressoria of Neoerysphe and Phyllactinia also branched at 120°. Podosphaera xanthii exhibited a simpler branching pattern.  相似文献

The ultrastructure of the mature internode cell wall of Nitella opaca is described. It is interpreted in terms of a helicoidal array of cellulose microfibrils set in a matrix. A helicoid is a multiple plywood made up of layers of parallel microfibrils. There is a progressive change in direction from ply to ply, giving rise to characteristic arced patterns in oblique sections. A critical tilting test, using an electron microscope fitted with a goniometric stage, showed the expected reversal of direction of the arced pattern. Nitella cell wall is thus more regularly structured than previous studies have shown. From a survey of the cell-wall literature, we show that such arced patterns are common. This indicates that the helicoidal structure may be more widespread than is generally realised, although numerous other cell walls show no signs of it. Nevertheless, there are examples in most major plant taxa, and in several types of cells, including wood tracheids. Most of the examples, however, need confirmation by tilting evidence. There are possible implications for wall morphogenesis. Helicoidal cell walls might arise by selfassembly via a liquid crystalline phase, since it is known that the cholesteric state is itself helicoidal. A computer graphics programme has been developed to plot the expected effects of growth strain on the patterns in oblique sections of helicoids with various original angles between consecutive layers. Herringbone patterns typical of crossed polylamellate texture can be generated in this way, indicating a possible mode of their formation.  相似文献

Summary By quantitative analysis of cellulose microfibril orientation at different levels in the primary cell wall of a number of cell types, the development of wall texture was studied. Meristematic, isodiametric and cylindrical parenchyma cells and cells of a suspension culture were used. Within the newly deposited microfibril population, various orientations were recognized on the micrographs. Within subpopulations the orientation of undercrossing and overcrossing microfibrils were measured. These measurements showed a gradual shift in cellulose microfibril orientation in the different levels. Microfibrils showed predominant orientations at particular levels but microfibrils of intermediate orientation also occurred, although at a much lower density. As cellulose microfibrils of intermediate orientation were not closely packed, lamellae were not formed. Interwoven microfibrils were occasionally present, indicating that differently orientated microfibrils are occasionally deposited simultaneously. Also gradual changes in orientation over the entire inner cell wall surface were observed. From these observations it was inferred that microfibril deposition occurs with a small but regular and progressive change in orientation, the rotational motion, related to that of a helicoidal system.Dedicated to Professor Dr. M.
