We describe a new genus and species of hadrosaurid dinosaur, Latirhinus uitstlani, from upper Campanian strata of the Cerro del Pueblo Formation in northern Mexico. The new taxon differs from other hadrosaurids, except Gryposaurus, in possessing a deep and arcuate dorsal process of the nasal; it differs from Gryposaurus, as well as from all other saurolophines, in having a broader narial foramen, and an anterodorsally curved deltoid crest of the scapula (convergent with Lambeosaurinae within the context of Hadrosauridae). L. uitstlani appears to be allied to ‘kritosaurs’, particularly to species of Gryposaurus, and it represents one of the southernmost saurolophines of North America. Likewise, L. uitstlani adds to the diversity of saurolophines in the southern Western Interior Basin and its occurrence in northern Mexico is consistent with the apparent predominance of ‘kritosaurs’ in southern Laramidia during late Campanian times.  相似文献

In the latest Maastrichtian, the European hadrosauroid fauna was more diverse than those of North America and Asia. The European record of hadrosaurid dentaries is an example of this diversity, and most of the sites with mandibular remains are located in the Ibero-Armorican Realm. Within the Iberian Peninsula, most of the remains are located in the Tremp Basin (South Central Pyrenees). Two of the three valid hadrosaurid taxa defined in this basin are from the Blasi sites (Arén, Huesca province): Arenysaurus ardevoli (Blasi-3) and Blasisaurus canudoi (Blasi-1). A new locality in Blasi (Blasi 3.4) has provided a new dentary from an indeterminate euhadrosaurid. This dentary presents some characters intermediate between Arenysaurus and Blasisaurus, some characters similar to Pararhabdodon isonensis (from the nearby province of Lleida), and some characters of its own. Nevertheless, due to its fragmentary character, without dentition or its edentulous anterior part, it cannot be determined above the level of Euhadrosauria. It thus represents a fourth Iberian euhadrosaurian taxon in the Ibero-Armorican Realm, different from Arenysaurus, Blasisaurus and Pararhabdodon, increasing the diversity of hadrosauroids in this realm at the very end of the Cretaceous.  相似文献

Hadrosaurids were the most derived ornithopods and amongst the most diverse herbivore dinosaurs during the Late Cretaceous of Europe, Asia, and the two Americas. Here, their biogeographical history is reconstructed using dispersal‐vicariance analysis (DIVA). The results showed that Hadrosauridae originated in North America and soon after dispersed to Asia no later than the Late Santonian. The most recent common ancestor of Saurolophidae (= Saurolophinae + Lambeosaurinae) is inferred to have been widespread in North America and Asia. The split between saurolophines and lambeosaurines occurred in response to vicariance no later than the Late Santonian: the former clade originated in North America, whereas the latter did so in Asia. Saurolophine biogeographical history included a minimum of five dispersal events followed by vicariance. Four of these dispersals were inferred to have occurred from North America to Asia during the Campanian and Early Maastrichtian, whereas a fifth event represented a southward dispersal from North to South America no later than the Late Campanian. The historical biogeography of lambeosaurines was characterized by an early evolution in Asia, with a Campanian dispersal to the European archipelago followed by vicariance. Reconstruction of the ancestral areas for the deepest nodes uniting the more derived lambeosaurines clades (‘hypacrosaurs’, ‘corythosaurs’, and ‘parasaurolophs’) is ambiguous. The split between North American and Asian clades of ‘hypacrosaurs’ and ‘parasaurolophs’ occurred in response to vicariance during the Campanian. The evolutionary history of North American ‘hypacrosaurs’ and ‘parasaurolophs’ was characterized by duplication events. Abstract: The juvenile anatomy of various cranial and appendicular elements of the hadrosauroid dinosaur Bactrosaurus johnsoni is described in detail. Growth changes are documented from juvenile to adult stages for each skeletal element available. In the studied skull, ontogenetic trends consist of: development of features on the ventral surface of the frontal; reduction in the slope of the posteromedial process of the premaxilla; a posterior shift of the dorsal process of the maxilla; development of concavities on the medial surface of the prefrontal; increased robustness and development of the ventral flange of the jugal; decreased curvature of the long axis of the quadrate; increased ventral deflection of the dentary; and changes in the length/width proportions and depth of the anterior surface of the predentary. In the appendicular skeleton, the majority of ontogenetic variation from juvenile to adult occurs in the limb bones, including increased robustness of the deltopectoral crest of the humerus; relative shortening of the ulna; increased development of the fourth trochanter and mediolateral widening of the distal end of the femur; increased expansion of the cnemial crest of the tibia; and the increased prominence of articular protuberances and flanges of the metatarsals. A survey of the phylogenetically informative characters present in B. johnsoni indicates that several characters concerning the frontal, maxilla, jugal, quadrate, predentary, dentary, scapula, humerus and ilium are affected by ontogeny. Nevertheless, the majority of phylogenetic characters are not ontogenetically variable, suggesting that a substantial amount of the information provided by juvenile and subadult specimens for phylogenetic inference is reliable in basal hadrosauroids.  相似文献

Lambeosaurine hadrosaurids exhibited extreme modifications to the skull, where the premaxillae, nasals, and prefrontals were modified to form their iconic supracranial crests. This morphology contrasts with their sister group, Hadrosaurinae, which possessed the plesiomorphic arrangement of bones. Although studies have discussed differences between lambeosaurine and hadrosaurine skull morphology and ontogeny, there is little information detailing suture modifications through ontogeny and evolution. Suture morphology is of particular interest due to its correlation with the mechanical loading of the skull in extant vertebrates. We quantify and contrast the morphology of calvarial sutures in iguanodontians and ontogenetic series of Corythosaurus and Gryposaurus to test whether the evolution of lambeosaurine crests impacted the mechanical loading of the skull. We found that suture interdigitation (SI) increases through ontogeny in hadrosaurids, although this increase is more extreme in Corythosaurus than Gryposaurus, and overall suture complexity (i.e., overall shape) remained constant. Lambeosaurines also have higher SI than other iguanodontians, even in crestless juveniles, suggesting that increased sinuosity is unrelated to the structural support of the crest. Hadrosaurines and basal iguanodontians did not differ. Similarly, lambeosaurines have more complexly shaped sutures than hadrosaurines and basal iguanodontians, while the latter two groups do not differ. Taken together, these results suggest that lambeosaurine calvarial sutures are more interdigitated than other iguanodontians, and although suture sinuosity increased through ontogeny, the suture shape remained constant. These ontogenetic and evolutionary patterns suggest that increased suture complexity in lambeosaurines coincided with crest evolution, and corresponding modifications to their facial skeleton altered the distribution of stress while feeding.  相似文献

A new hadrosaurid dinosaur, Arenysaurus ardevoli gen. et sp. nov., from the Late Maastrichtian of Aren (Huesca, South-central Pyrenees) is described on the basis of a partial, articulated skull, mandibular remains and postcranial elements, including vertebrae, girdle and limb bones. Arenysaurus is characterized by having a very prominent frontal dome; nearly vertical prequadratic (squamosal) and jugal (postorbital) processes, and deltopectoral crest of the humerus oriented anteriorly. Moreover, it possesses a unique combination of characters: short frontal (length/width approximately 0.5); midline ridge of parietal at level of the postorbital-squamosal bar; parietal excluded from the occiput; squamosal low above the cotyloid cavity. A phylogenetical analysis indicates that Arenysaurus is a rather basal member of Lambeosaurinae and the sister-taxon to Amurosaurus and the Corythosaurini-Parasaurolophini clade. The phylogenetic and biogeographical relationships of Arenysaurus and other lambeosaurines suggest a palaeogeographical connection between Asia and Europe during the Late Cretaceous.  相似文献

Nipponosaurus sachalinensis is the only definitive lambeosaurine hadrosaurid from Sakhalin Island of Russia. Previous studies suggested it was a member of Lambeosaurini (derived lambeosaurines). However, its phylogenetic status within Lambeosaurini remains controversial. In addition, some studies argued the juvenile ontogenetic stage of the holotype and regarded Nipponosaurus as an invalid taxon. In order to solve these problems, its definite growth stage is determined through histological studies. Absence of a line of arrested growth, presence of osteons with large vascular spaces, and presence of primary bone remnants even in the highly modified regions of the femur confirm that the holotype was a juvenile. More than a hundred of the 350 characters used to determine the phylogenetic position of Nipponosaurus are ontogenetically variable characters based on the different ontogenetic stages of Hypacrosaurus stebingeri. Our phylogenetic analysis reveals that Nipponosaurus is a basal lambeosaurine hadrosaurid, much further down in the tree than previously suggested, and shows a polytomy with Blasisaurus and Arenyisaurus. This study also indicates that Nipponosaurus is a valid taxon because it possesses unique characters within the Lambeosaurinae (presence of massive surangular anterodorsal process, presence of lateral shelf of the dentary, and a relatively short ulna), which are independent of ontogeny.  相似文献

2002年9月,来自七个国家的地层古生物学者,在中国吉林省长春市吉林大学举行了“黑龙江流域白垩纪生物群及K/T界线国际学术研讨会”。会议之后学者们对黑龙江沿岸中新生界地层进行了实地踏勘,在踏勘的过程中在嘉荫县永安村之东南1.2km的黑龙江岸边发现了一滚石板,其上保存一较完整的大型恐龙足印。足印印迹在厚层钙质胶结的粗砂岩上,经查对化石产出岩层为嘉荫群永安村组(Sun et a1.,2003)。化石是一大型的三趾的足印(tridactyl),三趾短粗,中趾呈U型,趾间有蹼的痕迹,造印者应是一只鸭嘴龙(Thulbom,1990)。黑龙江省嘉荫县是我国第一只命名的恐龙——黑龙江满洲龙(Mandschurosaurus amurensis)化石的产出地,化石产自嘉荫群渔亮子组(Riabinin,1925,1930;Dong,1992)。本文记述的标本是嘉荫群中发现的第一件足印化石,也是我国鸭嘴龙类足印化石的首次记录(甄朔南等,1996)。  相似文献
