Phytostabilization aims to immobilize soil contaminants using higher plants. The accumulation of trace elements in Populus alba leaves was monitored for 12 years after a mine spill. Concentrations of As and Pb significantly decreased, while concentrations of Cd and Zn did not significantly over time. Soil concentrations extracted by CaCl2 were measured by ICP-OES and results of As and Pb were below the detection limit. Long-term biomonitoring of soil contamination using poplar leaves was proven to be better suited for the study of trace elements. Plants suitable for phytostabilization must also be able to survive and reproduce in contaminated soils. Concentrations of trace elements were also measured in P. alba fruiting catkins to determine the effect on its reproduction potential. Cadmium and Zn were found to accumulate in fruiting catkins, with the transfer coefficient for Cd significantly greater than Zn. It is possible for trace elements to translocate to seed, which presents a concern for seed germination, establishment and colonization. We conclude that white poplar is a suitable tree for long-term monitoring of soil contaminated with Cd and Zn, and for phytostabilization in riparian habitats, although some caution should be taken with the possible effects on the food web.

Two hundred and twenty-four phytoplanktonic taxa were recorded in a riverine floodplain on the NE side of the Doñana marshland from September 2002 to 2004. This collection of 11 samples included 80 Bacillariophyceae (Diatoms), 71 Chlorophyta, 39 Cyanophyta, 19 Euglenophyta, 6 Chrysophyceae, 5 Cryptophyta, and 4 Dinophyceae. Fifty-five percent of the total taxa had a very low frequency of appearance (<5%), while only three species appeared with a frequency >90% (Monoraphidium contortum Komárková-Legnevorá, Cyclotella atomus Hustedt, and Nitzschia palea W. Smith). According to multivariate analyses, both temporal and spatial factors produced a pattern in the phytoplankton assemblages dominated by freshwater inputs during winter flooding, tidal inputs in summer, and transitional stages during the rest of the year. Spatial segregation of phytoplankton was likely due to differences in retention time and distance to water input. The main taxa involved in this segregation were Chrysidalis sp. 1 (June 2003 and 2004), Chlamydomonas sp. 4 (September 2003), C. atomus (December 2003), and Tetradesmus aff. crocini (February 2004). The hydrologic complexity of the study area could account for this high taxa richness by promoting replacement and colonization episodes following seasonal changes in water source (freshwater versus tidal inputs).  相似文献

Animals make decisions relying on environmental cues associated to high survival or breeding success along their evolutionary history. However, because of rapid anthropogenic changes in the environment, they may lack useful cues, making bad decisions with potential consequences for individuals and populations. Contaminants are difficult or impossible to detect for animals, so polluted habitats could be used in spite of their dangerous effects. The Eurasian otter Lutra lutra reoccupied the Guadiamar River (SW Spain) <1 year after a toxic spill that killed the fauna living in it. The levels of heavy metals and arsenic (As) in the river trophic web at that moment were probably harmful for otters. To investigate this, we determined the amount of several heavy metals including copper, cadmium, zinc (Zn) and lead (Pb) and metalloids such as As in otter faeces and estimated the exposure of otters to these elements as average ingestion. Concentrations of Zn, Pb and As were statistically higher in faeces collected along the Guadiamar River than in those collected along the Guadalete River (reference area). An 'average otter' in the Guadiamar River would consume 3–4 mg of Pb and more than 5 mg of As daily. Such doses must be hazardous for the species and challenge the usual assertion that otter presence is a good indicator of river quality.  相似文献

This study is part of the Restoration Program of the animal populations from the Guadiamar River basin. The main objective is to evaluate the current state of populations of the most representative groups of edaphic coleoptera in the Guadiamar River basin. In 1998, a breach in the Aznalcóllar mines retaining wall (Southern Iberian Peninsula) led to toxic sludge pouring out into this area. Systematic samples were taken from monitoring plots, scattered throughout the affected area. In order to provide an overall assessment of the fauna collected from this area in relation to adjacent areas, ecological indices were applied, and temporal course and biogeographical comparisons were also made. The results indicate that, overall, the edaphic fauna has not been significantly affected by the spillage; however, a faunistic poverty was also detected, which becomes increasingly evident closer to the accident site. Moreover, temporal evolution analysis suggests that the most affected areas are undergoing a re-colonization process, although this varies widely between species and higher taxa.
