Life history theory suggests that the optimal evolved level of reproductive effort (RE) for an organism depends upon the degree to which additional current reproductive investment reduces future reproductive output. Future reproduction can be decreased in two ways, through (i) decreases in the organism's survival rate, and/or (ii) decreases in the organism's growth (and hence subsequent fecundity). The latter tradeoff–that is, the “potential fecundity cost”—should affect the evolution of RE only in species with relatively high survival rate, a relatively high rate of fecundity increase with body size, or a relatively high reproductive frequency per annum. Unless these conditions are met, the probable benefit in future fecundity obtained from decreasing present reproductive output is too low for natural selection to favor any reduction in RE below the maximum physiologically possible. Published data on survival rate, reproductive frequency and relative clutch mass (RCM) suggest that many lizard species fall well below the level at which natural selection can be expected to influence RE through such “potential fecundity” tradeoffs. Hence, the relative allocation of resources between growth and reproduction is unlikely to be directly optimized by natural selection in these animals. Instead, energy allocation should influence the evolution of RE only indirectly, via effects on an organism's probability of survival during reproduction. Survival costs of reproduction may be the most important evolutionary determinants of RE in many reptiles, and information on the nature and extent of such costs is needed before valid measures of reptilian RE can be constructed.  相似文献

Summary Bioelectrical parameters and unidirectional sodium and chloride fluxes were measured under voltageclamp conditions in groups of lizards submitted to single or chronic aldosterone treatment. Both acute (AT) and chronic (CT) treatment induced significant increases in the short-circuit current (I sc), as well as in the mucosa-to-serosa (J m-s Na ) and net sodium flux (J net Na ). In AT tissues, aldosterone did not change net chloride flux (J net Cl ) but did so in CT tissues. Amiloride reduced the aldosterone-increased I sc in AT and CT tissues, inhibited J net Na in AT tissues and abolished it in CT colons. J net Cl was also reduced by the diuretic in the group of AT colons, whereas no changes were observed in the CT tissues. Addition of luminal DIDS reduced Na+ absorption and totally inhibited Cl- absorption in the AT tissues, but did not change I sc. However, in CT tissues neither Na+ nor Cl- transport were affected by DIDS. A good relationship between I sc and J m-s Na was apparent after DIDS treatment in AT tissues. In this group, simultaneous addition of DIDS and amiloride totally abolished J net Na and reduced I sc to untreated control values. Addition of serosal ouabain abolished I sc and Na+ absorption in AT and CT colons, but Cl- absorption was only altered in AT tissues. These results support the hypothesis that aldosterone induces an electrogenic, amiloride-sensitive sodium absorption, and in a dose-dependent fashion suppresses electroneutral NaCl absorption in the lizard colon.Abbreviations AT acutely treated - CT chronically treated animals - DIDS 4-4-diisothiocyanatostibene-2-2-disulfonic acid - DMSO dimethylsulphoxide - G t tissue conductance - I sc short circuit current - PD transepithelial potential difference - SITS 4-acetamido-4-isothiocyanatostilbene-2-2-disulfonic acid - UC untreated controls Preliminary results of this paper were presented at the X th meeting of the European Intestinal Transport Group (EITG), Askov Hojskole, Denmark, 16–19 September 1990  相似文献

When varanid lizards, Varanus niloticus, were allowed to select their preferred body temperature (c. 34°C) they exhibited swifter growth, larger food intake and superior efficiency of conversion when compared with animals restricted to a maximum body temperature of 24°C. At the higher temperature the animals also exhibited a higher metabolic rate and increased thyroid activity, while those at the lower temperature lostproportionately more energy via respiration. A complete energy budget over a period of 6 weeks is presented.  相似文献

The arboreal, Neotropical lizard Plica plica (Linnaeus, 1758) has been long considered a widespread species with a distribution east of the Andes. A preliminary examination of 101 specimens from about 28 locations mostly north of the Amazon suggests that Plica plica is a cryptic species complex with taxa that can be distinguished on the basis of the number of scale rows at mid-body; the arrangement, shape and ornamentation of scales on the snout; the number of lamellae on the fourth toe; the number of subocular plates; as well as other commonly used external morphological traits. The allopatric species discussed here are concordant with northern South American geography. Plica plica (Linnaeus, 1758) is associated with the Guiana Shield (Suriname, Guyana and Venezuela). A second species, P. caribeana sp. n. is associated with the Caribbean Coastal Range of Venezuela including Trinidad and Tobago. A third, distinctive species, P. rayi sp. n. is associated with the middle Orinoco at the eastern edge of the Guiana Shield. Two other species, P. kathleenae sp. n. and P. medemi sp. n., each based upon a single specimen, one from the Sierra Acarai Mountains of Guyana, and the other from southern Meta, Colombia are described. In addition to morphological analyses, we sequenced 12S and 16S rDNA gene fragments from one Plica plica from Trinidad to assess its relationship and taxonomy to other mainland Plica cf. plica. The results suggest Plica caribeana sp. n. likely diverged prior to the separation of Trinidad from northern Venezuela. Isolation in the Caribbean Coastal Range during its rapid uplift in the late Miocene, combined with a marine incursion into northern Venezuela may have contributed to their genetic divergence from other populations.  相似文献

Human beings have been credited with unparalleled capabilities for digital prehension grasping. However, grasping behaviour is widespread among tetrapods. The propensity to grasp, and the anatomical characteristics that underlie it, appear in all of the major groups of tetrapods with the possible exception of terrestrial turtles. Although some features are synapomorphic to the tetrapod clade, such as well‐defined digits and digital musculature, other features, such as opposable digits and tendon configurations, appear to have evolved independently in many lineages. Here we examine the incidence, functional morphology, and evolution of grasping across four major tetrapod clades. Our review suggests that the ability to grasp with the manus and pes is considerably more widespread, and ecologically and evolutionarily important, than previously thought. The morphological bases and ecological factors that govern grasping abilities may differ among tetrapods, yet the selective forces shaping them are likely similar. We suggest that further investigation into grasping form and function within and among these clades may expose a greater role for grasping ability in the evolutionary success of many tetrapod lineages.  相似文献

Natural selection tends to favour optimal phenotypes either through directional or stabilizing selection; however, phenotypic variation in natural populations is common and arises from a combination of biotic and abiotic interactions. In these instances, rare phenotypes may possess a fitness advantage over the more common phenotypes in particular environments, which can lead to adaptation and ecological speciation. A recently radiated clade of dwarf chameleons (Bradypodion) restricted to southern KwaZulu‐Natal Province, South Africa, is currently comprised of two species (Bradypodion melanocephalum and Bradypodion thamnobates), yet three other phenotypic forms exist, possibly indicating the clade is far more speciose. Very little genetic differentiation exists between these five phenotypic forms; however, all are allopatric in distribution, occupy different habitats and vary in overall size and coloration, which may indicate that these forms are adapting to their local environments and possibly undergoing ecological speciation. To test this, we collected morphometric and habitat data from each form and examined whether ecological relevant morphological differences exist between them that reflect their differential habitat use. Sexual dimorphism was detected in four of the five forms. Yet, the degree and number of dimorphic characters was different between them, with size‐adjusted male‐biased dimorphism being much more pronounced in B. thamnobates. Habitat differences also existed between sexes, with males occupying higher perches in more closed canopy (forested) habitats than females. Clear morphological distinctions were detected between four of the five forms, with the head explaining the vast majority of the variation. Chameleons occupying forested habitats tended to possess proportionally larger heads and feet but shorter limbs than those in open canopy habitats (i.e. grassland). These results show that this species complex of Bradypodion is morphologically variable for traits that are ecologically relevant for chameleons, and that the variation among the five phenotypic forms is associated with habitat type, suggesting that this species complex is in the early stages of ecological speciation. © 2013 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2013, 109 , 113–130.  相似文献

We incubated eggs of five Phrynocephalus species (P. albolineatus, P. axillaries, P. grumgrzimailoi, P. helioscopus and P. przewalskii) at three constant temperatures (24℃, 28℃ and 32℃) to examine differences in incubation length and hatchling morphology among species and among temperature treatments. We combined data from this study with those reported previously for P. frontalis and P. versicolor to examine whether embryonic stage at laying is a causal factor for interspecific variation in incubation length, and whether the phylogenetic relationship inferred from hatchling morphology is consistent with the relationship based on mitochondrial DNA data. Mean values for incubation length differed among the five species studied herein and, in all these five species, incubation length decreased at a decreasing rate as temperature increased. In none of the five species did hatchling size (snout-vent length and body mass) and other morphological variables differ among the three temperature treatments. The seven oviparous Phrynocephalus lizards found in China differ from each other in hatchling morphology, and embryonic stage at laying is a causal factor of inter- and intra-specific variation in incubation length. The phylogenetic relationship inferred from hatchling morphology is not always consistent with the currently known relationship based on mitochondrial DNA data. Data from this study and those reported previously allow the conclusion that any Phrynocephalus species may have its unique position along the axis defined by hatchling morphology.  相似文献
