Temporal variability in certain morphological and taxonomically important features was quantified for Sargassum polyceratium Mont. from a population in the Content Keys, Florida (U.S.A.). Patterns of blade development, senescence, and loss caused pronounced seasonal changes in blade length-width ratios. Blade length and width were maximal early in the growing season (August-November) and decreased as the annual stems matured. Early in the growing season, plants had broader blades with randomly distributed cryptostomata. Late in the growing season (February-April), plants had more linear blades with cryptostomata approximately arranged in two rows, one on each side of the midrib. The length-width ratio of blades increased acropetally along the stems and were directly correlated to the size of the cryptostomatal opening and inversely correlated with the number of cryptostomata. The branching pattern of the annual stems ranged from short spur branches to well-developed, lateral axillary branches. The frequency of bifurcated blades increased significantly late in the growing season. Vesicle shape and size and pedicel length were temporally stable. Alated pedicels and mucronate vesicles occurred in low frequencies. The variability of the morphological features used to delineate species within the genus Sargassum on the tropical eastern coasts of the Americas is poorly understood.  相似文献

The reproductive phenology and epiphytic macroalgae of Sargassum muticum were studied through an annual cycle (September 1987 to November 1988) at two sites on the northwestern coast of Baja California, Mexico, which were subjected to different degrees of wave exposure. Sargassum muticum is a brown alga of Japanese origin, now considered a permanent member of the marine flora of Baja California. A similar reproductive development was observed at both sites, with a maximum percentage of reproductive plants from May to July (spring–summer) and minimum from December to March (winter). Reproductive plants were found throughout the year. A total of 48 species of epiphytes were identified and seasonal variation in their diversity was observed. The greatest diversity was found at the more protected site.  相似文献

The brown algae are one of the largest and most important groups of primary producers in benthic coastal marine environments. Despite their biological importance, consensus regarding their taxonomic or evolutionary relationships remains elusive. Our goal was to produce a taxon‐rich two‐gene (rbcL and LSU rDNA) phylogeny. Key species were sequenced to represent each order and family in the analyses across all 19 orders and ~40 families, including selected outgroups Schizocladiophyceae and Xanthophyceae. Our results are in sharp contrast to traditional phylogenetic concepts; the Ectocarpales are not an early diverging clade, nor do the Fucales diverge early from other brown algae. Rather, Choristocarpus is sister to the remaining brown algae. Other groups traditionally considered to have primitive features are actually recently diverged lineages, turning traditional phylogenetic concepts upside down. Additionally, our results allow for the assessment, in the broadest context, of many of the historical and more recent taxonomic changes, resulting in several emended groups along with proposals for two new orders (Onslowiales, Nemodermatales) and one new family (Phaeosiphoniellaceae).  相似文献

The daily variations of phenol contents and antioxidant capacities were surveyed in a 32-h field experiment in three temperate brown seaweeds belonging to Fucales - Pelvetia canaliculata, Ascophyllum nodosum and Bifurcaria bifurcata - living at different intertidal levels — high-, mid- and low-tide level, respectively. Phenolic compounds of brown seaweeds are secondary metabolites involved in many different protection mechanisms, as for example against grazer and pathogen attack as well as UV damage. This study was thus aimed at understanding the influence of both day/night and tidal cycles on the brown seaweed phenol pool with respect to their bathymetric level on the shore. These cycles affect the quantity and quality of light received by intertidal seaweeds (protection via the water layer during immersion), and the photoprotective role of phlorotannins was thus evaluated. Phenol levels and antioxidant capacities were monitored every hour during a tidal cycle and a half at the equinox spring tide, in March 2003. The three species contained rather high phenol levels, i.e. about 3, 6 and 4% DW in P. canaliculata, A. nodosum and B. bifurcata, respectively. Antioxidant capacities globally paralleled phenol contents in the three species under study. Moreover, the measured antioxidant capacities and the phenol contents of the extracts were significantly and positively correlated in the three species. Significant effect of neither cycles nor their interaction was observed in any species despite a trend to follow day/night alternation for P. canaliculata, and emersion/immersion cycle for A. nodosum. No trend was observed for the third species. However, significant correlations between phenol levels of P. canaliculata and A. nodosum and measured air-temperature were found. Our results suggested an effect of aerial, aquatic and both conditions on the phenolic pool of P. canaliculata, B. bifurcata and A. nodosum, respectively, and a fast evolution of the phenolic pool on a day time scale.  相似文献

Intra‐thallus variation in fatty acid and pigment contents and profiles was investigated in five species of Laminariales (Alaria esculenta, Laminaria digitata, Laminaria hyperborea, Saccharina latissima, and Saccorhiza polyschides), and three Fucales (Ascophyllum nodosum, Fucus serratus, and Himanthalia elongata). Significant variation occurred across all species and compounds examined. Total fatty acids were generally higher in the fronds, with highest levels and largest variability observed in A. nodosum (1.5% of dry weight (DW) in the base, 6.3% of DW in frond tips). Percentages of the omega‐3 fatty acids 18:4 n‐3 and 20:5 n‐3 were generally higher in more distal parts, while 20:4 n‐6 exhibited a contrasting pattern, with higher levels in basal structures and holdfasts. Trends for pigments were similar to those for fatty acids in Laminariales. In the Fucales, highest levels were detected in the mid‐fronds, with lower concentrations in meristematic areas. Highest levels and greatest variability in pigments (e.g., chl a) was observed in F. serratus (1.07 mg · g?1 DW in the base, 3.04 mg · g?1 DW in the mid frond). Intra‐thallus variability was attributed to physiological functions of the respective thallus sections, e.g., photosynthetic activity, meristematic tissue, and to variations in physical attributes of the structures investigated. Regarding potential commercial nutritional applications, fronds appeared to represent most suitable source materials, due to higher levels of pigments, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and more preferable omega‐3/omega‐6 ratios.  相似文献

Natural abundance 13C NMR spectroscopy has shown that altritol (talitol) is a major constituent within vegetative and reproductive tissues of Himanthalia elongata. Quantitative GC studies have confirmed that altritol concentrations are 80–160% higher than for the hexitol mannitol (which occurs throughout the Phaeophyta). The data suggest an osmotic role for altritol.  相似文献

We compared the morphology of all four members ofPelvetia andSilvetia (Fucaceae, Phaeophyta), with an emphasis on phylogenetic relationships.Silvetia is segregated fromPelvetia because it has two, longitudinally divided eggs in the oogonium. In contrast, the eggs of the genusPelvetia are transversally divided. A cladistic analysis, based on 17 morphological features, shows thatPelvetia is closely related toHesperophycus andPelvetiopsis, as are three species ofSilvetia. We can infer from the cladistic tree and biogeographic information that some silvetian ancestor populations from the northern Pacific region likely evolved toS. babingtonii in northern Japan and then moved to Korea and California (USA), whereS. siliquosa andS. compressa, respectively, diverged. Our morphological study corroborates the DNA-based phytogeny and the ensuing taxonomy for the two genera. These results demonstrate the necessity for systematically revising the family Fucaceae to emphasize egg development, rather than egg number, in the oogonium, as a diagnostic character.  相似文献

Turbinaria foliosasp. nov. is described on the basis of several collections made from Dhofar, Sultanate of Oman. The new species is known only from southern Oman, a region of the northern Arabian Sea that is strongly impacted by the upwelling from the summertime monsoon. It is distinguished from other species of the genus by the shape of the leaves and by their loose, non‐congested arrangement. Air vesicles, embedded in the leaves, may be present, but more often are absent. A census of the currently recognized species in the genus Turbinaria is provided. Reference is made to Sargassum turbinarioides and Sargassum turbinati‐folium. These species possess discrete blades and spherical vesicles and thus conform to Sargassum.  相似文献

SUMMARY The effects of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and temperature on the photosynthesis of two Vietnamese brown algae, Sargassum mcclurei and S. oligocystum (Fucales), were determined by field and laboratory measurements. Dissolved oxygen sensors and pulse‐amplitude modulated (PAM) fluorometry were used for the measurements of photosynthetic efficiency. A Diving‐PAM revealed that underwater measurements of the effective quantum yield (Φ PSII ) of both species declined with increasing incident PAR, with minimum Φ PSII occurring during noon to early afternoon. Φ PSII recovered in the evening, indicating photo‐adaptation to excessive PAR. In laboratory experiments, Φ PSII also decreased under continuous exposure to 1000 μmol photons m?2 s?1; and full recovery occurred after 12 h of dark acclimatization. The net photosynthesis – PAR experiments of S. mcclurei and S. oligocystum conducted at 28°C revealed that the net photosynthetic rate quickly increased at PAR below the saturation irradiance of 361 and 301 μmol photons m?2 s?1 and nearly saturated to maximum net photosynthetic rates of 385 and 292 μg O2 gww ? 1 min?1 without photoinhibition, respectively. Gross photosynthesis and dark respiration experiments determined over a range of temperatures (12–40°C), revealed that the maximum gross photosynthetic rates of 201 and 147 μg O2 gww ? 1 min?1 occurred at 32.9 and 30.7°C for S. mcclurei and S. oligocystum, respectively. The dark respiration rates increased exponentially over the temperature ranges examined. The estimated maximum value of the maximum quantum yield occurred at 19.3 and 20.0°C and was 0.76 and 0.74, respectively. Similar to the natural habitat of the study site, these two species tolerated the relatively high temperatures and broad range of PAR. The ability of these species to recover from exposure to high PAR is one of the mechanisms that allow them to flourish in the shallow water environment.  相似文献
