Synopsis Laboratory experiments were conducted to examine changes in behavior of red hake,Urophycis chuss, under decreasing concentrations of dissolved oxygen (DO). Since the ecological requirements of this species change with age, responses were measured for three different groups: (1) age 0+, = 89 mm total length (TL); (2) age 1+, = 238 mm TL; and (3) age 2–3+, = 397 mm TL. As DO decreased from 8–10 mg l-1 to < 0.5 mg l-1, changes were evident in active time, water column activity, range of horizontal movement, food searching, and agonistic behavior. Age 0+ fish were most sensitive, moving up into the water column and swimming continuously as DO levels fell below 4.2 mg l-1. Age 2–3+ fish were the least responsive, remaining on the substrate and increasing only their range of movement at concentrations below 3 mg l-1. Responses of age 1 + fish were variable, possibly reflecting a transition stage between the younger and older fish. Common to all groups was the decrease and eventual cessation of food searching.  相似文献

A test of a model for planktivorous filter feeding by bream Abramis brama   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Synopsis The planktivorous feeding of bream, Abramis brama on Daphnia hyalina and Bosmina coregoni was analyzed in a stepwise regression analysis with the average size (and standard deviation) of consumed organisms as dependent variable and the size of the fish, the average size (and standard deviation) of the organisms and their density in the environment as independent variables. Three basic predictions on filter feeding were formulated and tested. It was predicted that the (average) prey size should increase with fish size, but that the standard deviation should decline. Secondly the prey size should be strongly correlated with the prey size available and thirdly the prey density should have little effect on the size selection. These hypotheses could not be rejected for bream>10 cm feeding on B. coregoni and for bream>20 cm feeding on D. hyalina. The hypotheses were not valid for smaller bream as these acted as particulate or combined filter- and particulate feeders.  相似文献

Summary Rainbow trout swimbladder epithelium consists of non-ciliated and ciliated cells in the ratio of greater than 21. Non-ciliated cells contain vesicles filled with a mucus-like material and similar material is found lining the surface of the swimbladder lumen. Morphological evidence for discharge of the vesicle contents was obtained. In addition, nonciliated cells contain osmiophilic lamellar bodies which resemble the cytosomes of lung alveolar cells of air-breathing vertebrates. Summary The phylogeny of the creatine kinase (CK, EC 2.7.3.2) isozyme loci and their differential tissue expressions were determined for representatives of 65 families of vertebrates, with emphasis on the fishes. The transition from the single creatine kinase locus, characteristic of certain echinoderms, to the two creatine kinase loci which are orthologous to those present in all vertebrates, occurred early in the chordate line. The majority of pre-teleostean fishes possesses only these two CK loci (A and C). These loci are relatively generalized in their tissue expressions which are variable among species of primitive fishes. The third and fourth creatine kinase loci (B and D) arose separately in the ancestors of the bony fishes and appear to be the result of regional genome duplications. Concomitant with the increase in the number of isozyme loci has been an increase in the specificity of their tissue expression. In the advanced teleost fishes the four CK loci are differentially expressed in a characteristic manner. The A2 isozyme predominates in skeletal muscle, the B2 isozyme in eye and brain, the C2 isozyme in stomach muscle, and the D2 isozyme is found exclusively in testis. We propose a phylogeny of the creatine kinase genes in the lower chordates based on the time of appearance of new CK loci, the sequence in which the loci achieve a tissue restricted expression, and the immunochemical relatedness of the orthologous and paralogous gene products.  相似文献

Synopsis Feeding chronology, daily ration, and the effects of temperature upon gastric evacuation were examined in the pipefish,Syngnathus fuscus, from field and laboratory data.S. fuscus displayed a pattern of diurnal feeding, characteristic of syngnathids. Daily ration calculations yielded estimates of 4.0 and 4.4% body weight per day, which are comparable to estimates for other teleosts. Evacuation rate was found to be temperature dependent. with more rapid evacuation with increasing temperature. In addition, evacuation rate was found to be positively correlated with gut content. Slowing of evacuation rate with decreasing gut content may allow for increased assimilation efficiency during periods of low food availability. Daily ration, although controlled by the temperature dependence of evacuation rate, may also be controlled by prey abundance; fish maximize food intake during periods of high prey availability, and maximize upon assimilation during periods of low prey availability.Contribution number 1035 of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science of the College of William and Mary.  相似文献

Synopsis Oxygen uptake (Vo 2) was measured in carp of approximately 40 cm length swimming at controlled variable oxygen tensions (Po 2). At Po 2> 120 mm Hg Vo 2 increased with an increase in swimming speed from 5.6 to 11.3 cm · sec–1. Extrapolation of Vo 2 to zero activity at Po 2 = 140 mm Hg revealed a standard O2 uptake of 36.7 ml O2 · kg–1 · h–1 at 20° C. At the lowest swimming speed (5.6 cm · s–1) the oxygen uptake increased when the water Po 2 was reduced. A near doubling in Vo 2 was seen at Po 2 = 70 mm Hg compared to 140 mm Hg. At higher swimming speeds in hypoxic water Vo 2 decreased relative to the values at low swimming speeds. As a result the slope of the lines expressing log Vo 2 as a function of swimming speed decreased from positive to negative values with decreasing Po 2 of the water. pH of blood from the caudal vein drawn before and at termination of swimming at Po 2 = 70 mm Hg and 100 mm Hg did not show any decrease in relation to rest values at Po 2 = 140 mm Hg. Blood lactate concentration did not increase during swimming at these tensions.  相似文献

通过流式细胞仪测量了兴国红鲤(Cyprinus carpio Var. Singuonensis)、奥利亚罗非鱼(Sarotherodon aurea)、 鳙(Aristichthys nobilis R.)和团头鲂(Megalobrama amblycephala Yin.)红细胞的DNA含量,四种鱼与鸡红细胞DNA含量的比值分别为1·65、0.96、0.91、1·15,以鸡红细胞DNA含量2.3pg/N计算,四种鱼二倍体体细胞的 DNA含量分别为3.80 pg/N, 2. 22pg/N、2. 08pg/N、 2. 66pg/N。另外,四种鱼外周血红细胞分别有26%、 26%、 23%、 24%的细胞处于 DNA合成期(S),DNA合成后期(G2)和分裂期(M),这表明这四种鱼类的外周血红细胞并非失去分裂能力的特化细胞群,它们表现了较强的细胞周期现象。这有可能是这几种硬骨鱼类外周血仍具有造血功能的缘故。  相似文献

The surface structures of the tongues of Dissostichus mawsoni, Trematomus bemacchii, f. borchgrevinki (Nototheniidae), Stemoptyx diaphana (Sternoptychidae), Diretmus sp. (Diretmidae), Cataetyx memorabilis (Ophidiidae), Photoblepharon palpebratus (Anomalopidae), Carapus mourlani (Carapidae) and Salmo gairdneri (Salmonidae) were investigated with the scanning electron microscope. The aim of the study was to test the theory that the degree to which gustatory receptors are developed morphologically in different species of fishes is related to the environment, and in particular to the variey of food present in the latter. It was found that in the two mesopelagic species, S. diaphana and Diretmus sp., taste receptors were poorly developed, but in the benthic deep-water fish C. memorabilii , which lives off South West Africa in a biologically rich environment, well-developed taste receptors occurred in large numbers. The three Antarctic species studied had similar tongue surface structures with rather well developed papillae of a moderate density. Photoblepharon palpebratus , in spite of its small tongue, possessed a large number of taste buds on elevated ridges; Carapus mourlani , however, had only very few obvious receptors and is thought to be a poor taster. Undoubtedly the highest degree of taste receptor development is found in the freshwater trout Salmo gairdneri. The results support the hypothesis that taste receptor development and the variety of food types preseni in a fish's environment are correlated.  相似文献

Late Wordian/Capitanian (Guadalupian, Middle Permian) fish assemblages are described from the “McKittrick Canyon Limestone”, Lamar Limestone and Reef Trail Members of the Bell Canyon Formation in the Patterson Hills and the PI section (Hegler/Pinery Members) along Highway 62/180 in the Guadalupe Mountains, West Texas. The assemblages contain chondrichthyan teeth of Stethacanthulus meccaensis, Texasodus varidentatus, Cooleyella cf. amazonensis, C. cf. peculiaris, and the new genus and species Lamarodus triangulus; and buccopharyngeal denticles of undetermined symmoriiform; chondrichthyan scales of eight morphotypes; fragment of an actinopterygian jaw, isolated teeth; the scales of Alilepis sp., Varialepis sp. and undetermined elonichthyid and haplolepid fishes. Using microtomography, the vascularization system has been observed for the first time for the teeth of Texasodus varidentatus and a new taxon Lamarodus triangulus. The distribution of chondrichthyan taxa was analyzed for the known fish assemblages of the Early, Middle, and Late Permian of the world. The end-Guadalupian crisis in the evolution of chondrichthyan fishes involved substantially more taxonomic change than the Permian–Triassic mass extinction.  相似文献
