Stomatal closure by ultraviolet radiation   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
The effect of ultraviolet radiation (UV) (255–325 nm) on stomatal closure was investigated on tef [ Eragrostis tef (Zucc) Trotter] in the presence of white light (ca 50 ·mol m−2 s−1). The action spectrum showed that UV (ca 2 ·mol m−2 s−1, half band width about 10 nm) of 285 nm or shorter wavelengths was very efficient in causing stomatal closure. The effectiveness decreased sharply towards longer wavelengths. Radiation of 313 nm or longer wavelengths was practically without effect. Increasing UV intensity increased stomatal resistance. When stronger white light (5 to 9 times stronger than the one used during irradiation) was administered, stomates re-opened rapidly irrespective of whether the UV was on or off, although a subsequent gradual closing tendency was observed when the UV was on.  相似文献

A known population from each of a 24h culture of Bacillus cereus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella spp., Shigella spp., Klebsiella spp. and Staphylococcus aureus was inoculated into tef flour–water/kocho–water mixtures in screw-capped flasks and allowed to ferment for 30h at room temperature (18–21°C). The flasks were then heat-treated. Cultures of the test bacteria were inoculated into tubes containing graded volumes of 30-h-fermented tef dough/kocho extracts which had been heat-treated at 45, 61 and 80°C in assay broth containing aqueous extracts from injera and aradisame. They were incubated for 24h at 32°C and optical densities determined. Populations of the major indigenous bacteria, yeasts and moulds in fermented tef dough (30h), kocho samples, injera and aradisame were determined from other control portions of the same samples. Higher temperature (80°C) heat-treatment promoted the inhibitory potential of extracts from doughs of both foods as compared with lower temperature heat-treatments (45 and 61°C). Asporogenous test bacteria were affected more than the spore-formers. Better efficacy of extracts from injera and aradisame suggested improved antimicrobial properties of the baked products than in doughs. Heat of baking inactivated all vegetative cells although spores of B.cereus, the yeasts and moulds survived the heat (100°C) applied for 5min. The c.f.u./g of food for B. cereus was below the disease-causing level (0.5×101 and 1.5×103, in injera and aradisame, respectively). Actual baking temperatures in homes are higher than the ones used here; if post-baking contamination is minimized or prevented, the products would be microbiologically safe with respect to the asporogenous pathogens when served fresh. Further studies on aflatoxins and improved storage conditions for kocho are recommended.  相似文献

Tef (Eragrostis tef) is a major cereal crop in Ethiopia. Lodging is the primary constraint to increasing productivity in this allotetraploid species, accounting for losses of ∼15–45% in yield each year. As a first step toward identifying semi-dwarf varieties that might have improved lodging resistance, an ∼6× fosmid library was constructed and used to identify both homeologues of the dw3 semi-dwarfing gene of Sorghum bicolor. An EMS mutagenized population, consisting of ∼21,210 tef plants, was planted and leaf materials were collected into 23 superpools. Two dwarfing candidate genes, homeologues of dw3 of sorghum and rht1 of wheat, were sequenced directly from each superpool with 454 technology, and 120 candidate mutations were identified. Out of 10 candidates tested, six independent mutations were validated by Sanger sequencing, including two predicted detrimental mutations in both dw3 homeologues with a potential to improve lodging resistance in tef through further breeding. This study demonstrates that high-throughput sequencing can identify potentially valuable mutations in under-studied plant species like tef and has provided mutant lines that can now be combined and tested in breeding programs for improved lodging resistance.  相似文献

Little information exists about the establishment of native longleaf pine flatwoods species for use in restoration efforts and as buffers around natural areas in the southeastern United States. Composition of groundcover in these systems is dominated by perennial graminoid species. Vegetation in current buffers is generally non‐native turfgrass that can escape into natural areas, often reducing establishment and survival of native species. Where management objectives involve actively restoring native groundcover or reducing the probability of invasion by these non‐native turfgrasses, identification of native species and restoration methods is needed. We investigated seed germination and establishment of four species native to longleaf pine flatwoods in central Florida and one species native to the adjacent wetland communities. Paspalum setaceum, Panicum anceps, Eustachys petraea, and Eragrostis refracta were directly seeded, and P. distichum was planted as sprigs into three former P. notatum pastures. Irrigation, fertilization, weed control, and mowing treatments were assessed in terms of cover development of the sown species. Paspalum distichum developed the highest percent cover—over 80% in wet areas after 1 year. Mowing had mixed impacts depending on the species, and fertilization never significantly increased cover. Directly seeded species developed sparse cover (0–40%), probably as a result of drought conditions. However, E. petraea and E. refracta appeared more promising for use on rights‐of‐way when using high sowing rates. A second experiment conducted on a roadside included these two species and sprigged P. distichum. Both E. petraea and P. distichum developed more than 45% cover on the roadside. Establishment of these natives from seed or sprigs was significantly enhanced when site preparation effectively reduced the seedbank of other species present in the soil.  相似文献

Eragrostis pilosa (Linn.) P Beauv., a C4 grass native to east Africa, was grown at both ambient (350 μmol mol−1 and elevated (700 μmol mol−1) CO2 in either the presence or absence of the obligate, root hemi-parasite Striga hermonthica (Del.) Benth. Biomass of infected grasses was only 50% that of uninfected grasses at both CO2 concentrations, with stems and reproductive tissues of infected plants being most severely affected. By contrast, CO2 concentration had no effect on growth of E. pilosa , although rates of photosynthesis were enhanced by 30–40% at elevated CO2. Infection with S. hermonthica did not affect either rates of photosynthesis or leaf areas of E. pilosa , but did bring about an increase in root:shoot ratio, leaf nitrogen and phosphorus concentration and a decline in leaf starch concentration at both ambient and elevated CO2. Striga hermonthica had higher rates of photosynthesis and shoot concentrations of soluble sugars at elevated CO2, but there was no difference in biomass relative to ambient grown plants. Both infection and growth at elevated CO2 resulted in an increase in the Δ13C value of leaf tissue of E. pilosa , with the CO2 effect being greater. The proportion of host-derived carbon in parasite tissue, as determined from δ13C values, was 27% and 39% in ambient and elevated CO2 grown plants, respectively. In conclusion, infection with S. hermonthica limited growth of E. pilosa , and this limitation was not removed or alleviated by growing the association at elevated CO2.  相似文献

Aster kantoensis, an endangered and monocarpic perennial plant species, is endemic to the gravelly floodplain of a few rapid flowing rivers in eastern central Japan. In recent years, an extreme declining trend in the species has been accelerated due to the strong negative influence by invasion of an alien grass, Eragrostis curvula. A restoration project aimed at recovering the original condition of the floodplain in the Kinu River, central Japan, has been started. To determine the possibility of successful restoration as well as its habitat preferences, I carried out some seed sowing experiments. In April 2003, seeds collected from a seminatural habitat were sown (54,000 seeds) in the restoration site (1.2 ha), where flood frequency, substrate condition, and control of alien plants are combined to form different habitat conditions. Seedling survival, flowery, and seed production were subsequently monitored from 2003 to 2005. Seed cohorts completed their life cycles within 3 years, and mean fitness of 927 was achieved. Performance of A. kantoensis seedlings was generally greater for environmental variables of sandy-type substrate and/or with control of alien plants. In addition, there were significant negative correlations between percentage survival, percentage flowery, and seed production with vegetation cover and coverage of E. curvula. The results confirm that, if safe sites with sparse vegetation exist, irrespective of their substrate condition, as well as seed sources of river endemics in natural habitats, restoration of riparian vegetation including river endemics is possible. The aggressive alien species E. curvula should be taken into consideration.  相似文献

The potential distribution of alien species in a novel habitat often is difficult to predict because factors limiting species distributions may be unique to the new locale. Eragrostis lehmanniana is a perennial grass purposely introduced from South Africa to Arizona, USA in the 1930s; by the 1980s, it had doubled its extent. Based on environmental characteristics associated with its introduced and native range, researchers believed that E. lehmanniana had reached the limits of its distribution by the early 1990s. We collected data on E. lehmanniana locations from various land management agencies throughout Arizona and western New Mexico and found new records that indicate that E. lehmanniana has continued to spread. Also, we employed two modelling techniques to determine the current potential distribution and to re-investigate several environmental variables related to distribution. Precipitation and temperature regimes similar to those indicated by past research were the most important variables influencing model output. The potential distribution of E. lehmanniana mapped by both models was 71,843 km2 and covers a large portion of southeastern and central Arizona. Logistic regression (LR) predicted a potential distribution of E. lehmanniana more similar to this species current distribution than GARP based on average temperature, precipitation, and grassland species composition and recorded occurrences. Results of a cross-validation assessment and extrinsic testing showed that the LR model performed as well or better than GARP based on sensitivity, specificity, and kappa indices.  相似文献

C4 savanna grass species, Digitaria eriantha, Eragrostis lehmanniana and Panicum repens, were grown under optimum growth conditions with the aim of characterizing their above‐ and below‐ground biomass allocation and the response of their gas exchange to changes in light intensity, CO2 concentration and leaf‐to‐air vapour pressure deficit gradient (Dl). Digitaria eriantha showed the largest above‐ and below‐ground biomass, high efficiency in carbon gain under light‐limiting conditions, high water use efficiency (WUE) and strong stomatal sensitivity to Dl (P = 0.002; r2 = 0.5). Panicum repens had a high aboveground biomass and attained high light saturated photosynthetic rates (Asat, 47 μmol m?2 s?1), stomatal conductance, (gsat, 0.25 mol m?2 s?1) at relatively high WUE. Eragrostis lehmanniana had almost half the biomass of other species, and had similar Asat and gsat but were attained at lower WUE than the other species. This species also showed the weakest stomatal response to Dl (P = 0.19, r2 = 0. 1). The potential ecological significance of the contrasting patterns of biomass allocation and variations in gas exchange parameters among the species are discussed.  相似文献
