An upsurge in African horse sickness (AHS) in the Eastern Cape, South Africa, from 2006 led to an epidemiological reassessment of the disease there. Light trapping surveys carried out near horses, donkeys and zebras in 2014–2016 collected 39 species of Culicoides midge (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) that are potential vectors of AHS. To establish if these midges fed on equids, DNA sequences were obtained from the gut contents of 52 female midges (35 freshly blood‐fed, 13 gravid and four parous), representing 11 species collected across 11 sites. Culicoides leucostictus fed on all three equids. Culicoides bolitinos, Culicoides imicola and Culicoides magnus fed on both horses and donkeys. Culicoides onderstepoortensis fed on donkeys, and Culicoides similis and Culicoides pycnostictus fed on zebras. Bloodmeals from cows, pigs, warthogs, impalas and a domestic dog were also identified in various species, but none of the midges tested had fed on birds. These results contribute to knowledge of the vectorial capacity of several species of Culicoides with regard to AHS in the Eastern Cape and point to potential reservoir hosts, of which donkeys, zebras and domestic dogs have previously been found to harbour AHS. Blood‐fed midges were also obtained throughout winter, indicating the potential for endemic AHS in the province.  相似文献

The nucleotide sequence of the complete mitochondrial genome of the donkey, Equus asinus, was determined. The length of the molecule is 16,670 bp. The length, however, is not absolute due to pronounced heteroplasmy caused by variable numbers of two types of repetitive motifs in the control region. The sequence of the repeats is (a) 5′-CACACCCA and (b) 5′-TGCGCGCA, respectively. The order of (a) and (b) can be expressed as {n[2(a)+(b)]+m(a)}. In 32 different clones analyzed the number of n and m ranged from 0 to 9 and 1 to 7. The two rRNA genes, the 13 peptide-coding genes, and the 22 tRNA genes of the donkey and the horse, Equus caballus, were compared in detail. Total nucleotide difference outside the control region was 6.9%. Nucleotide difference between peptide-coding genes ranged from 6.4% to 9.4% with a mean of 8.0%. In the inferred protein sequences of the 13 peptide-coding genes the amino acid difference was 0.2–8.8%, and the mean for the 13 concatenated amino acid sequences was 1.9%. In the 22 tRNA genes, the mean difference was 3.5%, and that in the two rRNA genes was 4.1%. The mtDNA differences between the donkey and the horse suggest that the evolutionary separation of the two species occurred ≈9 million years ago. Analyses of differences among the mtDNAs of three other species-pairs, harbor seal/grey seal, fin whale/blue whale, and Homo/common chimpanzee, showed that the relative evolutionary rate of individual peptide-coding genes varies among different species-pairs and modes of comparison. The findings show that the superimposition of sequence data of one lineage for resolving and dating evolutionary divergences of other lineages should be performed with caution unless based on comprehensive data. The nature and distribution of hemotypes constituted by electrophoretic phenotypes in six loci, in a group of 183 Camargue horses, have been compared with those of five breeds of horses and ponies. The genetic similarities have been observed mainly with New Forest and Haflinger ponies, less with Barbs and Thoroughbreds, and the least with Arab horses.  相似文献

A large sample of skulls and associated dentitions of Cormohipparion sphenodus (Cope, 1889). new combination, is described from Miocene deposits of Nebraska, Colorado, New Mexico, and California. This species is morphologically more advanced than the most primitive species of the genus, C. goorisiMacFadden & Skinner, 1981, and more primitive than a third and more advanced species of this genus. C. occidentale (Leidy, 1856). In several characters such as configuration of the preobrital fossa, size, hypsodonty, shape of protocone, and complexity of enamel plication, C. sphenodus is morphologically similar, and potentially related to, some Old World Vallesian «Hipparion. In addition, based on radiometric calibration of stratigraphic sequences in Nebraska and California, C. sphenodus spans an interval of time from about 13.6 to 11 Ma. Inasmuch as the Old World «Hipparion Datum is calibrated at about 12 Ma, we conclude that C. sphenodus exhibits the morphological and chronological prerequisites to have been directly ancestral to some of these Old World forms. The hipparion horses apparently were a polyphyletic assemblage of several genera, and their biogeographic and biochronologic history is more complex than classically thought. Several dispersal events involving these horses may have occurred between the New and Old Worlds during the late Miocene.  相似文献

A new approach of reconstructing ungulate diet, the mesowear method, was recently introduced by Fortelius and Solounias ([2000] Am Mus Novitat 3301:1-36). Mesowear is based on facet development on the occlusal surfaces of the teeth. Restricting mesowear investigation to maxillary cheek teeth would allow mesowear investigation only in assemblages of large numbers of individuals and therefore would generally restrict this method to relatively few assemblages of recent and fossil ungulates. Most of the fossil, subfossil, and recent ungulate osteological assemblages that may be assigned to a single taxon have smaller numbers of individuals. This results in a demand to extend the mesowear method to further tooth positions in order to obtain stable dietary classifications of fossil taxa. The focus of this article is to test if a consistent mesowear classification is obtainable for mandibular as well as for maxillary teeth. For statistical testing, large assemblages of isolated cheek teeth of the Vallesian hipparionine horse Hippotherium primigenium and of the recent zebra Equus burchelli were employed as models. The upper tooth positions P4, M1, M2, and M3 as suggested by Kaiser and Solounias (2003) as the model for the "extended" mesowear method and the lower tooth positions P4-M3 were tested for their consistency in classification of the mesowear variables. We found a considerable shift of the mesowear signature towards the grazing edge of the mesowear continuum in lower cheek teeth. In order to adjust the signal of lower teeth to the signal of the upper teeth, a calibration factor was introduced which allowed incorporation of lower cheek teeth into the same model of mesowear investigation together with upper cheek teeth. We propose that this model is particularly suited for the reconstruction of paleodiets in hypsodont hipparionine and equine equids. We further investigated the functional relation between the mesowear profiles and the distribution of dental tissues along the course of the occlusal contact. We therefore correlated mesowear profiles with enamel distribution profiles and found the mesowear profile to be strongly controlled by the attritional environment encountered by a given apex area. The differential signal observed in cusp apex morphology between upper and lower cheek teeth was found to be more closely related to attrition by the antagonistic tooth than to the distribution of dental tissues in the tooth under consideration. The results suggest a general extension of the mesowear method of paleodiet reconstruction and a basic scenario for the evolution of anisodont dentitions.  相似文献

Mexico's Late Neogene mammal faunas are largely known from localities in the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt; those from other morphotectonic provinces are few and far apart. Thus, the discovery of Late Miocene vertebrates in western Sierra Madre Oriental at San Luis Potosí, the Paso del Águila local fauna, significantly adds to this meager record. The assemblage was collected from the floodplain facies of the San Nicolás Formation, a ∼1100-m thick, dominantly fluviolacustrine and calcilithitic, 15°–20° NE dipping sequence preserved in the Peotillos-Tolentino Graben, between 22°11’–22°19’ N and 100°30’–100°39° W. It includes remains of cf. Trachemys, a small to medium-sized emydid chelonian, a large camelid, a small cervid and a new species of the equini Pliohippus s.s., comparable in size, cranial morphology and odontographic characters to the Clarendonian-Early Hemphillian horses of the Pliohippus clade. Ar-Ar dates from ash-fall tuffs seemingly above and below the fossiliferous strata, bracket the age between 12.33 and 7.41 Ma (i.e., late Middle to Late Miocene), that is, within the Late Clarendonian-Early Hemphillian NALMA interval, making this fauna the first in Mexico from this age. The Paso del Águila local fauna is at least partly correlative with the Hemphillian local faunas from the TMVB and adjacent areas (e.g., Rancho El Ocote, Guanajuato and Tecolotlán, Jalisco), the Central Plateau (e.g., Arroyo Los Fragmentos, Zacatecas), and the Sierra Madre Occidental (e.g., Yepómera). Elsewhere, it is broadly correlative with the Late Clarendonian-Early Hemphillian faunas from the California Coast Ranges (e.g., North Tejon Hills, Ricardo and Dove Springs in the Mohave Desert), and the Gulf Coast Plain, Florida (McGehee Farm and Mixon). The Paso del Águila local fauna was part of a subtropical savannah and pine-oak forest (with a well-developed understory) biome that thrived on a climate regime much more humid than today.  相似文献

报道了在甘肃省东乡县龙担地点发现的中国长鼻三趾马Hipparion(Proboscidipparion)sinense头骨化石.

Primer sequences flanking 13 microsatellite loci isolated from the domestic horse (E. caballus) were successfully used to amplify homologous loci in the Przewalski's horse (E. przewalskii). The results demonstrate that the level of polymorphism at all 13 loci in the Przewalski's horse was comparable to that in the domestic horse and the overall exclusion probability in the Przewalski's horse was calculated to be 0.9994. The results suggest that it should be possible to use E. caballus-derived microsatellite markers to provide parentage verification and additional valuable information to the captive management of E. przewalskii. The ability to amplify corresponding loci in the remaining five species of the genus was also confirmed, illustrating the general application of markers isolated from the domestic horse to the evaluation of polymorphism in the other six species of the genus.  相似文献

The esterase in the blood serum samples of horse populations was estimated both to detect the null allele and to evaluate individual variability. Quantitative assays carried out on 800 sera classed by electrophoretic phenotypes and irrespective of family relationship, breed, sex, or age, showed marked individual variation of esterase activity. However, no differential activities for the four allelic variants examined could be demonstrated. Very low esterase activities were considered to be an indication of the presence of the null allele; in the majority of cases this hypothesis was confirmed by immunochemical titration of esterase protein and examination of family relationships. Conversely, in a limited group of closely related horses the presence of the null allele was easily inferred from examination of genealogies and phenotype comparison; it was further confirmed by immunochemical titration.  相似文献
