Conchospores from the perennial conchocelis phase of the annual, epiphytic, marine red alga Porphyra nereocystis Anderson, which in nature lives on the large annual kelp Nereocystis luetkeana (Mertens) Postels et Ruprecht, are released in culture only in response to a short-day photoperiod treatment followed by a long-day treatment. Each treatment requires a minimum of three to four weeks and is enhanced by lower temperature during the second photoperiod treatment. To our knowledge P. nereocystis is the first known dualdaylength seaweed and requires a short-day-longday treatment for completion of its life cycle. This stringent environmental control of its reproduction appears to be an adaptation to coordinate conchospore production with the seasonal availability of its host kelp Nereocystis.Abbreviations LD long day - SD short day - SLD shortlong day  相似文献

Twenty-four specimen of macroalgae were collected in nearshore waters of the island of Hawaii, identified, and maintained to examine how the epiphytic relationship between Gambierdiscus toxicus (isolate BIG12) varied among the macroalgal species. Gambierdiscus cells were introduced to Petri dishes containing 100 g samples of each macroalgal host, which were examined at two, 16, 24, and every 24–72 h thereafter, over a 29-day period. Gambierdiscus proliferated in the presence of some host species (e.g., Galaxaura marginata and Jania sp.), but grew little in the presence of other species (e.g., Portieria hornemannii). Gambierdiscus exhibited high survival rates (>99%) in the presence of Chaetomorpha sp., but died before the end of the experiment (after 21 days) with other host species (e.g., Dictyota and Microdictyon spp.). Gambierdiscus avoided contact with P. hornemannii, but averaged up to 30% attachment with other host species. The numbers of Gambierdiscus cells belonging to one of three classes (alive and attached; alive and unattached; and dead) were determined for each time point. The 24 algal hosts were grouped according to their commonalities relative to these three classes using a Bray-Curtis similarity index, similarity profile (SIMPROF) permutation tests, and Multi-Dimensional Scaling (MDS) analysis (PRIMER 6). The resultant six groupings were used to construct different Gambierdiscus growth profiles for the different algal hosts. Group A is characterized by a preponderance of unattached cells and high mortality rates. Groups B, C, E, and F also displayed high proportions of unattached cells, but mortality either occurred later (Groups B and C) or rates were lower (Groups E and F). Group D had the highest proportion of attached cells. Group E contained three out of the four chlorophyte species, while Group F contained the majority of the rhodophytes. Over 50% of the species in Group F are considered to be palatable, whereas Groups A, B, and C are composed of species that exhibit chemical defenses against herbivory. The results of this study coupled with previous findings indicate that Gambierdiscus is not an obligate epiphyte; it can be free-swimming and found in the plankton. The conditions that lead to changes between epiphytic and planktonic stages need to be better studied in order to determine how they affect Gambierdiscus growth and physiology, connectivity and dispersion mechanisms, and toxin movement up into the foodweb.  相似文献

The cultivation of the agarophytic red alga Gracilaria has become an activity of major importance in several parts of the world. However, Gracilaria cultivation in Chile still faces problems such as epiphytism. We report ceramialean epiphytism abundance, recruitment patterns and the microscopic stages fixed on the Gracilaria thalli in an intertidal bed (Metri bay) of southern Chile. Using a factorial field experiment, we analyze the effect of intertidal elevation and the use of epiphyte free inoculum on the abundance of ceramialean epiphytic algae. This evidence is used to provide management and control recommendations for ceramialean epiphytes. The results show a summer recruitment and increase in abundance of ceramialean epiphytes. A seasonal and spatial pattern of abundance of microscopic stages of this epiphytic algae was also found, showing a significant increase from the apical (new tissues) to the central parts of the thalli (older tissues). Apical tissues are free of epiphytic propagules. The epiphyte-free tissue zone decreases significantly from winter to summer. Also, a significantly higher density of microscopic stages of ceramialean epiphytes was found on the thalli collected in the farming are a during the summer at low tidal levels. The experimental results indicated that the abundance of epiphytes was greater at the lower tidal levels than at the higher distribution limits of Gracilaria and it was not possible to control epiphytism by manual cleaning. Epiphytic lifestyles have evolved independently in ecologically, morphologically, and taxonomically diverse plant species. Although this adaptation is widespread among angiosperms, it is only known to have arisen in a single gymnosperm species, Zamia pseudoparasitica (Cycadophyta). Zamia pseudoparasitica is endemic to the mountains of Western Panama, and little is known about the ecology of this unusual cycad. Here, we provide the first report of a potential seed disperser of Z. pseudoparasitica. Between late October 2019 and March 2020, we conducted arboreal camera trapping at three sites along the Talamanca Cordillera in Western Panama, yielding an accumulated survey effort of 271 camera days. Weekly direct observations were also performed using handheld binoculars at one site. Arboreal camera trapping revealed at least seven mammal species that visit this epiphytic cycad. At all three sites, the Northern olingo (Bassaricyon gabbii) was seen visiting individuals of Z. pseudoparasitica repeatedly, both while cones were closed and after they had opened. We estimated the time‐varying intensity of the visits throughout our sampling and used mixed models to compare the length of visits when cones were closed versus when they were open. Both duration and time‐varying intensity of visits increased after cones had opened and we documented Northern olingo removing and carrying away seeds. We also observed predation by the yellow‐eared toucanet (Selenidera spectabilis) which picked and destroyed mature Z. pseudoparasitica seeds. These results suggest that the Northern olingo could be an important seed dispersal agent for this rare epiphytic gymnosperm.  相似文献

In a special habitat near Lunz (Mittersee) long time epiphytism ofCocconeis placentula var.tenuistriata and var.klinoraphis onFontinalis antipyretica leaves causes characteristic, strongly localized alterations in the walls of affected cells. They turn brown, may thicken, and may produce cystolithe-like protuberances into the cell lumina. These reactions obviously are brought about by a specific property ofCocconeis, for other epiphytes do not cause any change. The comparison of theCocconeis vegetation on younger and olderFontinalis leaves shows a considerable variability of the reactions mentioned, and in another habitat none could be found. Apparently several factors cause these reactions. Altogether,Cocconeis placentula is not a completely harmless epiphyte under certain circumstances. The alterations of the moss cells may be interpreted partly as a premature aging process, partly as a defensive action corresponding to alterations induced by some parasitic fungi. Furthermore, the reactions ofCocconeis onFontinalis are remarkably parallel to the influence of the dinococcalean algaRaciborskia inermis onSpirogyra grevilleana.
