In contrast to adult humans, the epiglottis of other mammals and infant humans is situated close to the soft palate. It has been argued that this posture is maintained during swallowing, with food passing laterally around an intact airway. To test this supposition, the movement of the epiglottis in two contrasting mammalian species, pigs and ferrets, was studied by placing radiopaque markers on the epiglottis and soft palate. Swallowing was observed with videofluoroscopy while the animals were feeding on hard and soft foods, liquids, and food mixed with barium sulfate. Analysis of the images showed that bolus formation and downward movement of the epiglottis away from the soft palate were unvarying phenomena in both animals for all tested foods. The duration of the epiglottic movement was approximately 0.3 s for liquids and slightly longer for solids. Because swallowing never occurred past an upright epiglottis, the results of this study do not support the hypothesis that adult animals maintain a patent airway during swallowing. Instead, the epiglottis in nonhuman mammals downfolds similarly to that of adult humans during swallowing. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc. 相似文献

To elucidate compositional changes of the elastic cartilage with aging, the authors investigated age-related changes of elements
in the epiglottal cartilages by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry. After the ordinary dissection by
medical students at Chiang Mai University was finished, the epiglottises were resected from the subjects. The epiglottal cartilages
were isolated and the element contents were determined. The subjects consisted of 11 men and 14 women, ranging in age from
39 to 92 yr old. It was found that although the extent of accumulation of calcium and phosphorus was slight, calcium and phosphorus
increased progressively in the epiglottal cartilages with aging. In contrast, sulfur, magnesium, zinc, iron and sodium did
not change significantly in them. Regarding the relationships among elements, it was found that there were significant correlations
among calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and sodium in the epiglottal cartilages, with one exception between calcium and sodium
contents. In comparison between men and women, no significant differences were found in the predominant elements such as calcium,
sulfur, and phosphorus in the epiglottal cartilages. 相似文献

Summary Chondrocytes of the rat epiglottis contain large amounts of glycogen and lipids, which often make the cells resemble fat cells. The content of lipids is interpreted as being related to the function of the cells. The membranes of some of the large vacuoles are stained with ruthenium red. The cells give rise to long cytoplasmic processes. As in hyaline cartilage the intercellular substance consists of a fine network containing proteoglycan granules together with thicker cross striated fibers. Furthermore elastic fibers are found, consisting of amorphous and microfibrillar parts. In the matrix, both lysosome-like granules and more or less empty vesicles are observed. Accumulations of a finely particulate electron dense material and of a translucent amorphous material containing membrane bound granules are found in some lacunae situated in the outer part of the cartilage. These accumulations are possibly related to the development of collagenous and elastic fibers. 相似文献
